I'm looking for a Windows 95 compatible keyboard testing program. Something simple that'll show a layout and light up the keys as I press them, or has a mode where it'll prompt me specific keys in order and then gradually build up a list of all keys that are working, which are not present, etc.

You can use the application to test out each key on your device. When you press a key, it will be illuminated in green on the corresponding image of the keyboard on your screen. There are different models and different colors available. Untested keys are shown in yellow.

I've been given a laptop to fix - it is 'randomly scrolling documents'. I'm almost certain it's a faulty connection in the keyboard, causing page-down to fire. Is there a program I can use to monitor all key presses from the keyboard to see if this is the case?

Alternatively, you can use PassMark Keyboard Test. It's a shareware with a fully functional and free 30 day evaluation. It allows you to quickly check that all the keys on your computer keyboard are functioning correctly, check the keyboard LED's and look at the internal scan codes being generated by the keyboard.

However, when it is one of the modifier keys, or tab, or enter or a few other buttons, it gets harder to tell which key is to blame. Trying to type can result in all sort of shortcuts being triggered. Is there anyway to test what input is being recieved?

Try PassMark Keyboard test This program allows you to press a key combination and a graphical display of the keyboard appears on screen. It tells you which keys the computer thinks you are pressing and then you can determine which keys are stuck.

(sorry if this does not apply to you-) Over here in the UK, if you tell them that you're comfortable changing the keyboard and ask nicely, they will just send the part and let you do it yourself. Not sure whether this will work in your neck of the woods but worth a go nevertheless, nothing to lose right?

The keyboard is the main mechanical device for entering information into a PC or laptop. In the process of working with this manipulator, unpleasant moments may arise when the keys stick, the wrong characters that we press are entered, and so on. To solve such a problem, you need to know exactly where the problem is: in the mechanics of the input device or in the software in which you type. Our online keyboard testing service, the main tool for working with text, will help us with this.

Press the buttons on your keyboard, and if they work well, then on the monitor screen on the corresponding virtual layout they will be highlighted in blue at the time of pressing, and then painted in white. If the button sticks, leading to repeated operation, then it will be painted over in blue.

Testing your keyboard is a simple but painstaking process. For full testing of all keys, time and utmost care are required. In case of malfunctions found after the test, it is worth repairing a broken keyboard or buying a new one. If, in a text editor, the tested keys do not work fully, but worked during the test, it means that you have problems with the software.

The mechanical keyboard to this day remains the main source of information input. If you compare the mechanical keyboard with the touch, it is more comfortable to type voluminous messages and texts on the mechanical keyboard.

If you began to notice this with your keyboard, then you need to check it and find out if the reason is really in it. In the implementation of testing, our service will help us, which you can use now online, simply by pressing the keyboard buttons. The advantage of this method is that you do not need to download any third-party software.

Actually both CTRL-ALT-DEL does not bring up the taskmgr type Window and I am using the Passmark keyboard test and noticed that when you press CTRL-ALT-DEL you never see the DEL key being pressed but if you press each of the keys independently that the Passmark keyboard test verifies that each key was properly pressed.

PassMark KeyboardTest allows users to quickly check that all the keys on their computer keyboard are functioning correctly, check the keyboard LED's, look at the internal scan codes being generated by the keyboard and measure typing speed.

The down and up stroke of each key is registered and highlighted on a graphical image of a keyboard. Each time a key is pressed a variety of state information is updated in the window and on the keyboard picture.

Possible uses of the software include testing faulty keyboards, batch mode testing of keyboard in a production line environment, a typing tutor aid to practice your typing and examining the internal key codes.
Keyboard layouts

KeyboardTest supports custom keyboard design. It is possible to create your own keyboard layouts, including the keyboard image and key definitions. Two different portable computers and one desktop computer are provided as examples. For more information see the KeyboardTest FAQ.

These RAM tests don't take up a lot of space, so practically a USB of any size will suffice. Though depending on the USB you get, they can get more expensive than USBs with more storage. Case in point is Cisco Systems Cisco 1800/2800/3800 Memory 256 MB USB Flash that I found on Amazon for close to 440 dollar, i.e. about 1.500 dollar per GB, though it's probably a USB for special situations.

(My own experience: do not apply to others. Chat was not available as a contact option, therefore, any further issues will be handled via telephone/relay operator. This creates a catch-22 because the customer is advised against using the keyboard or mouse. Tech support did not use notepad. Once he was connected, my ability to respond via relay was over.)
