For the past couple of days, every time we try to call out from our landline, I get a fast busy signal. When people try to call us, their calls now frequently go directly to voicemail even though our phone is still ringing and we are trying to answer. (Once we pick up there is just silence. We finally figured out that no one is there because they are being sent straight to voicemail.) Anyone else having this issue or have any ideas on how to fix this issue without spending hours on hold and/or troubleshooting with customer service?

Which Verizon ONT is present? Is it the current Alcatel-Lucent (Nokia) 211 or one of the older models? If not sure, a picture of the ONT can be posted for us to check. If it is located inside of an enclosure, open the cover and maybe include some of the internal wiring in the picture.

This has been happening to us consistantly over the last 4 months. When we call, the call doesn't go through, when people call us, the phone sometimes rings but nobody is there but usually goes to voicemail. Sometimes we have dial tone, call a number, the number doesn't ring (such as if we are calling a cell phone) until we hang up, then it rings and they get nothing.

We had VZ to the house and they did diagnostics on the box and told me "there's a weird error code on the box that I don't know what it means". He replaced the box and the problem has continued. While this is going on, our internet and TV works.

The VZ tech told us to have someone come out while it's happening. Only that seems to be impossible for VZ to do because as soon as you call to report the issue, they do a line test and that clears the issue. The tech told us our physical wiring is as clean as it comes. No issues whatsover on the home inside wiring. Similiar going online (since internet works) and running the troubleshooter will eventually run a line test and that will give "we detected issues" and then simply do a reset and that will clear it.

Appears no way for VZ to fix it cause there's no way for VZ to actually get a tech out without actually doing a test that clears the problem. And the tech told me he needs to see it happening to know what's really going on (unless he lied to me which knowing VZ is a distinct possibility).

What signal do you get if you disconnect your landline phone from the phone socket and then call your number from another phone? (assuming that you have nothing else connected to the phone line - if so disconnect it as well e.g. another phone, adsl modem etc)

So I was having intermittent internet issues (which happens every 5-6 months or so) the techs say this is common (?!) but everyone else says "copper is dead". I would agree but I can't spend $200 on internet + landline and this is the least expensive way to go.

I get a dial tone when I pick up the landline (but it's oddly distant-sounding) and when I call another phone I get a fast-paced busy signal (very strange) since I'm calling mobile phones that all have call waiting and I know the phones that I'm calling are not in use.

I don't hear static or anything other than the dial tone when picking up the landline. When I call another phone I get busy signals. I had tech support call the landline in question and he said it "timed out" but eventually turned into the fast-paced busy signal.

If you disconnect everything from your telephone line, what signal do you hear in another phone e.g. a mobile phone, that you are using to call your landline number, ringtone, engaged tone, voice announcement or nothing at all?

If the ringtone stops in the calling phone when you do this, this proves that the line is good to the premises and that there may be a problem with the base station or the cord to the base station, if it is a portable phone or the phone itself if it is a corded phone.

If the ringtone continues in the calling phone when you do this then there is a problem with the line or you're not doing it correctly. If you're sure that you're doing it right then call your landline service provider about the problem.

I hosted a group of 7 Wednesday at 10 AM. The 7th person dialed in multiple times - sometimes getting no answer, getting a busy signal, and getting a message that capacity had been exceeded. Last week I hosted a meeting at the same time and no one connected and when I tried using another phone - to get the music off - I got a busy signal. My guess is that the site is unable to handle the significant increase in usage. But apparently seven people is not above capacity.

We truly apologize for any difficulties you are experiencing when attempting to connect to your conference line. Over the last week, our network has seen a dramatic increase in call, chat, and email volume. This high call volume has congested our conference bridges which has caused users to experience intermittent connection issues. Our engineers are working around the clock to accommodate the influx of activity on our network. Our dedicated customer care team is working hard to respond to all our users, so we thank you for your patience during these chaotic times.

Please note that most major telecommunication companies are experiencing congested networks. As telecommuting becomes the number one way of communication for most businesses around the world, companies will need some time to be able to accommodate the influx of traffic during this epidemic.

Suzanne had collapsed at home after having prepared her breakfast but finding herself unable to eat. By the time the ambulance got her to Emergency, she was largely immobile and had great difficulty speaking. She was obviously quite thirsty and when I asked one of the Emergency physicians to start hydrating her intravenously, he quickly arranged for that to happen.

Let me be clear. The moment that Suzanne told me she had found a lump in her breast; the moment it was diagnosed as cancer; the moment sixteen months later we learned that it had metastasized; all of these moments are indelibly etched in me with grief and shock.

Why was I so surprised? I later learned that this situation is not unusual for cancer patients in the final days. But we had never been allowed to meet with a palliative care physician until that hurried consultation in Emergency the previous day.

Suzanne had done everything she could to prepare for her death. She had made a new will, shown me how to cook the spaghetti sauce our son Alex consumes by the litre, picked her cemetery plot and chosen the engraving for her own tombstone. But she had not been allowed by the health system to meet with a palliative care physician who could prepare us for her final days.

Officially in Ontario, palliative care can begin at any point in the progress of the disease. However, according to the Canadian Cancer Society, about 40 percent of cancer patients in the province do not receive any palliative assessment in the last year of their lives.

Suzanne had talked a lot about her final wishes, mostly revolving around her desire to die at home. I subsequently learned that while this is the most common desire of terminal patients, in actual fact two-thirds die in hospital. We were quite simply preparing for the wrong thing. The contingencies we imagined were the wrong ones.

Suzanne had a great deal of difficulty clearing the secretions from her throat in her last days. She was constantly choking. This is apparently quite common. But I had not known that. I had to choose (or help her choose) between consciousness and comfort in the selection of medications. That too is common. I was not ready for that either.

Suzanne benefited from tremendous medical care during her illness. It was technically sophisticated and compassionately delivered. She and I were truly convinced she was given the best medical chance to live as long as she could with the best quality of life.

I understand also that it is a matter of resources, and that a very large share of our medical costs are already devoted to people in their last six months of life. But there is evidence too that good palliative care saves the system money through fewer Emergency visits and hospital admissions.
