After an apparenty automatic update of the firmware (20th of October), the printer first showed a few times the 79 Service Error. After trying to resolve that via some formum posts, the printer keeps rebooting now with an 49 Service Error. I've tried all kinds but to no avail unfortunately. I feel robbed of a printer now by HP because of the firmware update making my printer unuasable. I find that unacceptable!
You need to determine if this is a hardware issue or possible computer or software issue. Disconnect all network and USB cables from the printer, including wireless. Then restart the printer to see if you get the same error when disconnected. If you do, then either you have something corrupted in the print spooler or a driver issue. In that case, you must completely clear the spooler or possibly update your driver. If the device still fails to come to ready in stand alone mode then indeed it would appear that the update has gone awry. Post back with your findings and someone can advise further,
I have done everything you have mentioned. The printer keeps restarting and showing the "49 Service Error" just after the initialization screens appears. I can't even get to the menu on the printer it self.
Exact same problem today 10/23. Updated firmware and it appears to have bricked my printer. Just cycles from initializing to 49 service error turn off then on. Repeats over and over again. I hope HP plans to take care of this. One minute I have a perfectly functional printer. Then after a firmware update it's a paperweight. Please help!
Exact same problem. Service error 79 at first and could still get to the main menu. Every time I tried to print it would give the 79 error and restart. Now it's giving the 49 error while initializing and restarting. It won't get to the main menu anymore. Just continually resets and gives 49 error. My wonderful printer is dead after an HP firmware update. I feel like an idiot for leaving on automatic updates.
I don't know what to do. I bought a Brother printer last night. I'm tempted to buy HP cartridges from Amazon, open them and then return them. If the printer can at least get to the main screen (turn on) I think there is a way to downgrade the firmware. I'm pretty sure from research that HP intentionally bricked our printers to force us to use HP Cartridges,
This is NOT acceptable! I also did the soft and hard reset but to no avail. I have always used original HP cartridges so that can't be the problem (I've read here on the forum that that could cause the issue).
When I switch of the printer and switch it back on, it gives this error again.I have tried to give it a cold reset. But that didn't work either.I have downloaded both firmware downloads from hp.comfirst one has an application which transfers the firmware to the printer, but after about 5% the printer switches again to 49.4CF2 Service error.I also tried the second firmware. So I used filezilla to transfer the .rfu file. The start of the transfer looked good. But again, after about 5% there was a lost connection.
I disconnected the network cable. The printer boots fine then. But I can only print by network. So I reconnected it and changed the static IP address from .190 to .192 (on the end) and reconfigured a lot of pc's to use the new (lan) ip.
You can try detect, where is problem with this device according answers on this forum (remove a NIC and try to start printer and wait, if error occur, if not, you can add NIC w/o plug network connection and try to start printer and wait, if this error occur, you can try empty your queue and after that do reset of your printer, or empty your queue and then try to upgrade firmware)...
I'm responding to the additional folks, and the original post, about not upgrading the firmware. We had a spare HP Color LaserJet 4700 in a box we just took out. Tried to upgrade using the latest fw (2012) and received the same 49 service error. On another forum, I found the answer: HP has an ftp accessible repository for their old printer firmware:
I have a MFP M426fdw connected by USB to my computer. Every time I try to scan a document, the machine goes to a 79 service error and reboots itself. After it reboots, it usually will scan the next time.
I Have exactly the same problem with the HP Color Laserjet Pro MFP M477FDW. When scanning from the display to a directory on my NAS the machine goes to a 79 service error and reboots itself. Sometimes it works normally, but then again, after a few scans, the same problem occurs. I have other Laserjet Pro's and no one of them has this problem.
So one of our local clients called us and asked if we could do some printer troubleshooting. They have a HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn for a network printer. The problem, it keeps on getting service error 79 lately and the warranty is expired. This error message usually pops up when a print job is corrupted. It can also be caused by miscommunication between the spooler and the printer due to outdated firmware.
After the firmware installs, you should be able to print again. I do highly recommend rebooting the HP LaserJet Pro 400 first to fully activate the new updates. Also, make sure that HP CF280a toner cartridge is not empty to avoid another printer hassle.
I'm having problems getting an HP LaserJet Pro 400 Model M401dw to connect to my ClearPass-enabled SSID using 802.1x. I set the printer to use EAP-PEAP with WPA2-Enterprise and I see it attempting to authenticate against ClearPass, but the Access Tracker shows Authentication Method of "EAP" and gives the following alerts:
Thanks Colin and Tim. I went through the document and also verified I entered the cert name for the CPPM. Since it uses a GoDaddy cert I uploaded the GD root cert for CA in the HP printer web gui. I also spent over an hour on the phone with HP support yesterday. Once I convinced them that I DIDN'T need help with the settings on the client, but I DID need help getting the printer to connect to wireless, they took a bunch of screen shots and are escalating the issue. While on the phone we also updated the firmware on the printer via the web gui, which turns out is more reliable and recommended over using the touch panel on the printer itself. I'm using an HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dw with "Firmware Datecode" of 20150410.
it isn't a situation you want permanently, but with this error i usually add all authentication methods (EAP-PEAP / EAP-TLS / EAP-... / ... / ...) possible in the service to see if the printer perhaps uses something different then i expected.
The error "Client does not support configured EAP methods" I get whether a Certificate is installed or not. I started with the self signed Aruba Cert then when we got our signed Cert now I am unable to install the Public Cert from GoDaddy into the printer, the printer gives an invalid format error. I have tried every format I can export. It Says PEM/base 64 which is what I have tried numerous. Not sure if there is a bit limit or encryption type limit.
If you leave the Server Name blank, the printer accepts any certificate from the uploaded Root CA chain. Apparently, one of my coworkers had typoed our server name on the printer, causing the EAP error.
I've been doing a lot of work with Xerox with an OEM'd Lantronix wired-to-wireless bridge device and have had pretty good success. The problem has been that the cheaper model of Xerox printer doesn't yet officially support AirPrint through the bridge device. However, our managed print service guy is getting a Lantronix-brand device that will apparently support WPA2-Enterprise AND AirPrint for any wired printer. I'm excited about the possibility this bridge device may help with other needs in our retail and corporate environments.Hopefully I'll have it in my possession for testing next week.
Both scanning and printing were working fine, but I have since moved offices and onto a new network. On the new network, I changed the IP address of the printer settings and printing works. Scanning gives the above error. I uninstalled the MF Scan Utiility, downloaded the latest version of the MF Scan Utility, and tried again, but got the same error.
For me the only solution that worked was to uninstall any canon installations I had, then I went back and put in my Printer MF743Cdw and I installed the recommended ones; it was just two downloads. After install, it worked again like it used to work. This was weird and random because mine had been working just fine too and all of the sudden I started to get that error and it was very frustrating as I lost an entire day of work trying to resolve this issue. Best to just uninstall and re install. Good luck everyone, seems to be a pretty common error based on these forums and feed.

I've been using Windows 10 pretty much since Microsoft first rolled it out and I think the Windows 10 installation initially created this problem back in 2015. Everytime I got an update for a long time, the update would reset the Windows Image Acquisition settings. So the specific steps in this solution may be particular to Windows 10 but I think checking and fixing the WIA settings should work in Windows 7. Here is something I found that applies specifically to Windows 7; I don't know if it will work but it seems similar to the one I used for 10:
