When I bought my first 2 C920 I had to install specific logitech drivers in order to have a real 30 frames per sec, which wasn't a problem last year : with the "lws280.exe" from logitech (old logitech capture software) I could install drivers from 22/10/2012 and obtain a fluid signal. It still works with both webcams I've bought last year, but when I connect my new C920 :
- for an unknown reason I can't install these 2012 drivers : the logitech 2012 installer tells me that an "incompatible webcam is detected"... I can't find why (I've been trying an other C920 that I bought last month : same problem, I resent it thinking the webcam had a problem but with this new trial it seems the webcam isn't the problem).
The only solution I found is to install the last version of the logitech "capture" software, in which I can visualize a fluid 720p image. It generates a "logi capture" virtual input that I see in Isadora. But as soon as I click on "start live capture", Isa crashes... I've just been sending a isa crash report that occured when I clicked on "start live capture"...
- But if I close "logitech capture" software and choose directly "HD Pro webcam C920" as an input in 1280x720px I experience the same problems I described earlier : no fluid image, looks like the framerate is 12fps, while the soft indicates 30fps. If I put it in 640x480px the image becomes fluid (same in Isa when I choose directly "HD pro webcam C920" as input).
Looks like the driver of the webcam is not directly usable by the softs : it needs the "logitech capture" software as a bridge to fully understand it... rough because the "logitech capture" soft doesn't allow to fully control the exposure manually.
Since the "logitech capture" soft doesn't solve the problem, I did some tests trying to get a fluid image with the driver of the camera directly (and not the virtual input created by the "logitech capture" soft). I did a new try on vvvv (sorry it's not to compare both softwares, it's just to see if they react the same), and in the "video in" node in vvvv there is an option that solves the problem : "reference clock". When I change it from "default" to "system" or "none" the image suddenly becomes fluid... If I could repeat this on isadora all my problems would be solved, but I don't find any equivalent option in Isadora, and I don't really understand what that "clock reference" means.
In the first Picture you see the "logi capture" software witch takes the input from the "HD Pro Webcam C920" device alows some modifications like zoom etc. and creates the virtual device: "logi capture". if i select this device i get the drivererros massage as you can see below.
here you see the different video sources i can choose. if i choose the "HD Pro Webcam C920" and close the "logi capture" software, the webcam worst fine. but i need some of the extra features from the "logi capture" software.
If this not give a result, then I'm afraid that these extra features of the cam like zoom must be available only within Logitech's software, as they build it for taking the control of the camera and applying on the captured image some extra features and maybe filters as well.
on my opinion it is quite clear, that there some work needs to be done in the blizz software. logi capture for example works perfect with youtube in the browser. logitech is one of the famosed companys for accessories. the blizz software detect the virtual logi capture device, because the error massege is diffrent when "logi capture" is closed (like the camera is not connected).

Hello Rhonda,

Will capture solve this problem?
I'm trying to capture a video of a duration of X seconds every Y hours with python3.8 and opencv(4.2.0) in Manjaro XFCE. I'd like to get at least 20-30fps with a resolution of 720p or 1080p. I'm using a Logitech c920, but with a good resolution (eg 1920x1080) I'm stack at 5fps. I can set the fps at 30 but then the video is about 6 times shorter (python takes video at 5fps but records it as it was 30fps). Thus, to improve the fps I should use multithreading, although I can't get to implement in my code any of the examples I've seen. Any idea how to do it?
If you have have either of those named computers, you probably don't need a logitech webcam, and don't need to mess with the software On the other hand, if you have a mac mini or mac studio, you probably do need some sort of webcam, be it a iphone or a more primitive dedicated device.
I'm looking to use a Logitech C920 to capture still images (which I will later sew into a time lapse) Is it possible to use raspi-still to do this? I've read about the streaming solutions and using GSStreamer to stream video, but I'm just looking for a still solution.
