Billu, previously known as Billu Barber, is a 2009 Indian Hindi-language comedy drama film directed by Priyadarshan, produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and distributed by Eros International. It stars Irrfan Khan as the titular character alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Lara Dutta in lead roles with an ensemble supporting cast. Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra,[3] and Deepika Padukone[4] make special appearances in songs. The film was released on 13 February 2009 worldwide.
It is a remake of 2007 Malayalam film Katha Parayumpol[5][6] and loosely based on the story of friendship between Krishna and Sudama in the Bhagavata Purana.[7] The film was screened at the 2009 Hawaii International Film Festival.[7]
Billu is a poor barber who lives with his wife Bindiya and their two children, Gunja and Ronak in the village of Budbuda. He also spends time with his close friends Budbudiya and Naubat Chacha. Billu lives an uneventful life until Bollywood superstar Sahir Khan comes to the village for a film shoot.
On Sahir's last day in the village, the star speaks at Gunja and Ronak's school function. He tells the children about his own impoverished childhood when he had nothing but a special bond of friendship with another young boy, named Billu. It was Billu who had taken care of Sahir and eventually helped him travel to Mumbai by giving him his gold earring where Sahir became a star. Billu, who is standing at the back of the event, leaves during the talk without revealing to Sahir that he is there. However, the townspeople realizing their fault in ostracizing Billu, take Sahir to Billu's house. Billu's children come home and apologize to their father for the trouble they caused him. All of a sudden, Sahir enters Billu's home, reuniting with his best friend. They hug and embrace each other, with the whole village and Billu's family happily watching. In the end, Sahir must leave for another shoot but promises that his and Billu's friendship is reignited and will remain friends.
Director Priyadarshan cast Shah Rukh Khan and Lara Dutta in pivotal roles in the film. While these roles were initially offered to Akshay Kumar and Tabu, Kumar eventually opted out of the project due to date clashes,[8] as did Tabu.[9] The director then offered Kumar's and Tabu's role to Shah Rukh Khan and Ameesha Patel respectively, and both of them agreed to do the film.[5] Patel also opted out of the film[6] and sources have indicated that Juhi Chawla was signed on for the role.[10]
In April 2008, the director announced that he had cast Lara Dutta as Billu's wife.[11] The cast began filming for the project on 8 April 2008[12] and according to Shahrukh Khan, "the film is a sweet story of friendship...quite similar to the bond shared between Krishna and Sudama".[4] The film also features Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone in item numbers with Shah Rukh Khan.[13]
Released on 5 January 2009, the soundtrack for Billu has music by Pritam with lyrics from Gulzar, Neeraj Shridhar, Sayeed Quadri, Ashish Pandit, and Mayur Puri. The song "Khudaya Khair" was recorded by playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya who has rendered his voice for Shahrukh Khan in many movies. However, due to the controversy that was happening between Abhijeet and SRK, the song was withdrawn and was only used as a reprised version. The song "Love Mera Hit Hit" was sampled by Serbian pop singer Anabela in her song "Igra Istine", by Serbian singer Dejan Stanković in his song "Kaligula" and by Macedonian singer Boki 13 in his song "Kaligula".
The film was originally titled Billu Barber, but salon and beauty parlour associations of Bandra raised objections by finding the word "Barber" derogatory.[20] As head of the film's production company, Shah Rukh Khan eventually removed the word from the movie title and promotions,[21] renaming the film Billu. He also invited 'The Hairdressers' Association of Mumbai' members to the premier of the movie in order to assuage their protests.[22]
Shah Rukh Khan's Billo Barber directed by Priyadarshan sees Pritam Chakraborty encroaching into Vishal-Shekhar's territory. In an attempt to make the most of his big chance, the composer has gone all out in an album that's loaded with 15 tracks; of them eight are remixes of the originals.
The album blends several genres ranging from western styles, bhangra, rap, sufi and folk. The album doesn't lack energy and is high on beats like most of Pritam's songs. However, Pritam sticks to the tried and tested formula.
The first song "Marjaani" is a peppy, fast paced number sung by Sukhwinder Singh along with Sunidhi Chauhan who aptly complements him. Gulzar has penned the lyrics and the song has a Punjabi flavour with western beats. Spelling energy from the word go, this song has all the makings of a chartbuster.
"Love mera hit hit" explores the genre of rap in the voice of Neeraj Shridhar. But in spite of good beats, it is not very catchy. The song is very similar to Pritam's earlier compositions and fails to be experimental and foot-tapping. It has two more versions, "House Mix" and "Remix".
"You get me rockin and reeling" is another song sung by Neeraj Sridhar and entails a hip-hop twist with a few English lines thrown in. But despite a melodious tune, it somehow fails to hold you. It is an average song and doesn't spring any surprise. Even this has two more versions attached to it including a general remixed version and a "Video Edit" where Dominique joins Sridhar.
With a dramatic opening "Ae Aa O" is a completely young at heart, campus feel song with the guitar taking precedence. KK is the right choice to croon the song, which is energetic and high on tempo. Rana Mazumder and Suraj join KK on the vocals. The song can be termed as the rock number of the album.
A poignant number is a requisite for any album and for "Billu Barber", Rahat Fateh Ali Khan does a soulful Sufi routine with "Jaaon kahan". This is the first time in the album that Pritam shows an attempt to experiment. And the results are very soothing to the ears. The song sure has the potential to make a big impact on screen.
"Billu Bhayankar", a song with a tinge of folk, is an energetic, earthy tune, which is pure fun. Ajay Jhingran, Raghuveer and Kalpana generate a rustic feel with their vocals. The lyrics reflect the impression of a small town and keep the fun quotient intact.
"Billu Barber" is very ordinary in its approach to music. In spite of a few hummable songs, the album fails to impress. The overdose of remixes makes it a typical Pritam soundtrack that is not even close to his works in "Jab We Met" and "Race".
