Richard Gere's character in the film "Pretty Woman" was considered a black knight. Corporate raider Edward Lews had a change of heart and decided to work with the head of a company he originally planned to ransack.
White knights and poison pills are two defensive strategies that target firms can use to avoid being taken over by an unfriendly acquirer. A white knight involves a friendly investor or company who makes a better offer to purchase the target and prevent the unfriendly bidder from gaining control.
A hostile takeover is a type of acquisition that occurs when a company tries to gain control over another without the approval of the target's board. The target firm, which doesn't want to be purchased, may do what it can to prevent being acquired. This includes using defensive strategies, such as white knights and poison pills, or rejecting any offers outright. The acquirer, on the other hand, may try to purchase a controlling interest in the company. If unsuccessful, the acquirer may circumvent the target's board and go public with its offer to try to get the word out to investors and force the board to consider its offer.
"Each material has special qualities, no less important than its beneficial properties. They are encased in the ability of material to influence our feelings. Without the mediation of the artist, without the miracle of art, this ability is inactive and does not give any results " by A. Van de Walde.
Watercolour painting at all times aroused the admiration of the public for its poetic beauty and stylistic diversity. Paintings, drawings, etudes, sketches executed by a watercolour on paper became favourite objects of collecting.
This is a unique production, keeping the core of traditions, but improving recipes and methods of production in accordance with time requirements and carefully tested innovative developments. This knowledge and experience have been continuously supplemented and transmitted from generation to generation of experts for almost a century, determining the consistently high quality of paints.
Watercolours WHITE NIGHTS is a series of professional premium artists' watercolour paints with an age-old history. The series was born to the request of the professional art community for the development of watercolour, which has rich, clean and deep shades and can remain unchanged for many decades. So, in the early 30s of the 20th century, the legendary watercolour paints LENINGRAD were produced, which were subsequently renamed WHITE NIGHTS.
The paints got their brand name thanks to the unique natural phenomenon characteristic of St. Petersburg, a city in the northern part of Europe, where production is located. Every year, together with spring, the city has a period of white nights, when at night the sun does not go beyond the horizon and the natural lighting remains quite bright, that is, the whole night consists only of a couple of hours of light twilight.
This magical state of nature is very similar to watercolour painting - light, transparent, but saturated and thrilling, the same as the white nights of St. Petersburg.
All paints in this series consist of two to three pigments that have different particle sizes and specific gravity. These colours fascinate by the movement of pigments in water. Most interestingly they show their extraordinary character in wet work, when a large amount of water on the sheet allows pigment particles to move unhindered. The effects of pigment lamination appear some time after the application of strokes and are best seen in dried work. In the paints there are included also special additives that stabilize the movement of pigment particles in the mixtures. The granulating paints have noble complex colours and will enrich classical painting with the original effects of granulation and lamination of pigments, inspire the creation of abstract compositions with unusual technical solutions. The nature of the effects for granulating serie significantly depends on the type of paper: the use of watercolour paper with a pronounced texture (Fin and Torchon) will increase the granulation effect.
The colours of the series are selected for the main natural metal shades for illustrations and paintings. They are mixed perfectly and are easily taken to the brush, preserving all the qualities of watercoulor artists' paints.

We take our first cruise with Azamara (10 night Costa Rica voyage) in January. I have read about the white nights. Do they take place on every/this cruise (if so, I'll pack accordingly)? Also, I find myself wondering if there are other Azamara specific things that I should know. So far, we have only cruised with Celebrity. I know they have the same parent company and that Celebrity Captain Club benefits are transferable. I guess the loyalty scheme may be called something else on Azamara.
The loyalty programme is called Le Club Voyage and there are reciprocal arrangements with both Celebrity and Royal Caribbean. For now, points earned for sailing Celebrity and Azamara are amalgamated. See this link for details of that and the benefits:
They try and have a white nights on every cruise, if the weather contrives against them they have it indoors but hopefully given where you will be cruising, that will not be needed. No need to pack a whole outfit unless you want to - something small and white (Ive seen ladies have a white necklace only) is fine, though some do go white all over.
One thing special to Azamara is the Azamazing Evening - do try and go on it, it is free of charge and is always something different. They do so well getting everyone off the ship to the venue wherever it is but it does not feel like a mass crowded event.
Another Azamara specific thing people sometimes forget, the lovely coffees in Mosaic are free of charge (there is a charge for Nespresso but I don't think anyone has them!). The coffees (and their cakes and sandwiches) are also available from about 11 up in the Living Room as well so there are lots of places for a nice relax with a coffee if you like that. The Living Room also does great tapas 5-8.
The weather was very warm, the food great and the entertainment was fantastic. They have a great Ents team onboard Quest at the moment and I have to say the CD Russ was on fire....where does he get his energy from? He just never stopped dancing all night and even danced with the shy or older passengers by their tables.
We're going on our 2nd A cruise in Nov. Our first was about 4 years ago. It was their Antarctica itinerary and it was either too cold to do a white nights or perhaps before they started doing them? Anyway, I've wondered if they're done at sea or a night with a late departure? Maybe both?
What lovely people you are. Thank you all for your friendly, helpful replies. I have noticed that some cruise critic board areas as surprisingly snippy answers to some people's innocent questions being various versions of 'just research it yourself'! Yet we all know that cruise line websites (especially Celebrity's since they re-did-it) are not always as instinctive as they should be, and it's nice to get advice and tips from people already familiar with the particular cruise line.
You are correct in advising not to miss White Night...it is such fun. On our Panama Canal cruise, we also had two deck parties in addition to White Night...one was in Aruba where they brought on steel drum players and local dancers. Another port had local dancers for entertainment. Can't remember which port without looking at pictures.
