Thousands of shapefile maps can be downloaded for free from the following websites, including country shapefiles, shapefiles at province or state level, and other administrative boundaries maps. The shapefile (or ESRI shapefile) format is a geospatial vector format, and is one of the most commonly used map formats.
Free country shapefile maps can be downloaded below, which have already been integrated into StatPlanet. Maps indicated with an asterisk (*) are Flash maps rather than shapefile maps. Please note that not all country versions are using the latest version of StatPlanet. To update the country version to the latest version, please see the update instructions.
Download administrative data such as country boundaries, rivers, roads, etc. These data are freely available at -gis.org/gdata. Several data portals provide free GIS data, e.g. , , or Download the Administrative areas for Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.
We specify "shapefile" to remind you that this is spatial data. The Caribbean Island polygons are rigidly defined areas that may or may not align with the exact border of each island or country. It also may or may not include the correct area defined as "the Caribbean Islands." And the incident locations may or may not be as exact as the coordinate values indicate they are. And this data is temporal in nature (collected and reflecting a certain time period that may or may not be up to date).
Therefore, when you state your results, keep these things in mind when reporting or using your results. Your results are a best estimate given the accuracy and precision of the data.
If data for a particular country is required, it may also be worth checking out the national survey organisation as they may have data available for purchase. You could also do a Google search for '[country name] free GIS'.
