In 1897 Kristoffer Nyrop (1858-1931), a distinguished student of Romance linguistics and semantic change, wrote a book called Kysset og dets historie (The Kiss and Its History; being a nineteenth-century Dane, he stuck to the reactionary habit of writing his works in Danish, but the book was translated into English almost immediately and is still available.) The 190-page study reads like a novel. A week after its publication, all the copies were sold out, and Nyrop was asked to prepare a second edition and do so in a wild hurry, to be ready for Christmas sales. As could be expected, he complied. Regrettably, he said nothing about the origin of the word. Yet the literature on the etymology of kiss is huge.
Where then does Old Germanic kuss- kukk- belong? Many researchers have suggested that it is sound-imitative, like smack. Perhaps we really hear or think we hear smack, chmok, kuss, and kukk when we kiss. However, even an onomatopoeic word can have a protoform. Reconstructing any protoform is pure algebra. For example, the Gothic for come is qiman (pronounced as kwiman). Its indisputable Latin cognate is venire. To make the two belong together, we should posit an ancestor beginning with gw-. In Latin, g was lost, and in Germanic it yielded k, according to the law of the consonant shift (b, d, g to p, t, k). Did the ancestors of Latin speakers ever say gwenire? Most likely, they did.
Inhuman Kiss (Thai: แสงกระสือ), also known as Krasue: Inhuman Kiss, is a 2019 Thai supernatural horror film directed by Sitisiri Mongkolsiri. It was selected as the Thai entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, but was not nominated.[1][2] In 1940s Thailand, a krasue lives a normal life as a woman by day, but at night her head detaches from her body and seeks out for flesh and blood.[3][4]
The film starts with four children Jerd, Sai, Noi and Ting. They go to the forest to play hide and seek. Noi and Sai decide to hide inside the house that supposedly contains the spirit of a Krasue that protects the forest. Sai encounters a krasue inside the box she decides to hide in. The scene is fast forwarded to the time when the four friends are in their teens. Sai and Jerd are in Thailand while Noi is in Bangkok pursuing his medical training. It is the time of World War II and all the nurses in Thailand have gone to Bangkok to care for the wounded which is why Sai goes to the local hospital to nurse the wounded. Jerd has a crush on her which is obvious to everyone except her.
It's always interesting to learn just how different other cultures around the world really are - and thanks to Aquaman's international rollout, we're getting some interesting stories about how some foreign countries are treating the film.
I don't think it's any different compared to Atlanna and Tom's kissing scenes (that aren't cut). The only difference is, the camera films Arthur and Mera's in circle. And apparently Indonesia thinks that's harmful for 13 year old kids ?
As you can see above, Indonesia decided that climatic kiss between Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) was too hot for teenage viewers to see, and cut the scene from the film. However, what's odd is that the Indonesian censors didn't think that such displays of affection and sexuality were inappropriate across the board - because the definitely left in an earlier kissing scene, between Aquaman's mother Atlanna (Nicole Kidman) and his father Tom (Temuera Morrison). As some fans joked, Indonesia apparently has issue with kissing on the sea - but kissing on land is A-ok!
Indonesia wasn't the only country to cut the Aquaman/Mera kissing scene: Saudi Arabia also felt the moment was inappropriate for theatrical viewing. That combination led some fans to crack some pretty good jokes, reflecting on just how censored (or not) their own cultures are:
If anything, the climatic Aquaman kiss moment was inappropriate for once again dragging out the tired blockbuster movie trope of having the hero and the love interest stop for a passionate kiss at the most inopportune moment possible. When that kiss goes down in Aquaman, there's a crazy Atlantean civil war erupting on the seas, with soldiers on all sides (and all of them Aquaman's subjects) killing each other by the minute. It's meant to be a moment where Mera inspires Aurthur to fight and lead like a true king - but for many fans, it really came off as laughably cheesy. To be fair, most of the Aquaman / Mera romantic subplot in the film did feel pretty cheesy when it wasn't flat - thankfully, Jason Momoa and Amber Heard both did well with their respective characters when not trying to force a love story.
