I have just switched from iPhone to a Samsung and cannot believe how unsafe the Spotify app is in the car. The navigation buttons are small, the widget is tiny and unadjustable, and in the settings of the app there is no option to enable a car mode that changes the Spotify app display to a bigger simpler layout with large skip and like buttons. Why isn't this basic safety feature available to all Spotify users? I don't have a big computer display in my car to plug into for the weird car thing option. I don't think that should mean I have to die in a crash. Am I missing the setting where this is enabled? Please make this iPhone driving mode available to android users too, and enable adjustability of the android widget size. It's so dangerous.
Hey @slowepiphanies, you should be able to use Car Mode on your Android device. It's meant to activate automatically when you're connected to a vehicle's audio system through bluetooth. Please check out this page for details on Spotify's functionality in cars as well as instructions for accessing the car mode setting to make sure it's on.
Hey @dinomight I don't have the Show Car Mode option under settings, nor do I have the option to keep Spotify open on the screen when I drive, which would also be quite a logical setting to have available. I'm in Canada and I'm using the newest Samsung s23. Thoughts? Are only people in the states allowed to drive with Spotify options?
We can confirm Car mode is available in iOS in Canada. Since you mentioned you have an Android device, is expected you won't see it just yet. We really appreciate your comments in the matter and we'd like you to know we work every day to improve the app. You can read more about Car mode in this article.
I wanted to give this the thumbs up. I agree totally with the first comment about Spotify having the resources to implement Car Mode for Android. Perplexing that they haven't. Unfortunately I can't agree with the second comment. In Australia, touching your phone while driving causes many accidents and now incurs a whopping fine. Spotify needs to concentrate on integrating voice mode with Google Assistant voice control. Problem solved, especially with "read me my options" command.. so you don't have to look at the tiny screen to see what it's displaying
It is indeed ridiculous that this feature is not available for Android users. I also just switched from my iPhone to a Samsung S23 Ultra and was also looking for the car mode toggle which is not there.
I really believe that Spotify is focusing on the wrong priorities when it comes down to development resources. Spending months on getting the heart symbol replaced with a + and removing the option to see hearts behind your liked songs in albums and playlists is crazy. Thousands of people are upset with this change. That is where you spend your development time, but implementing car mode just like you have on iOS is something that does not have your atention. This is really shameless i have to say. Then you really show you're disconnected from your users. Same story with the 'Download using Mobile Data' toggle behaviour. When it is turned off, Spotify still uses mobile data connections for downloading content for streaming or updating songs. How ridiculous is that, thousands of users complain about this issue as well.
Dear Spotify, pls let your users vote for development priorities, the decisions you make for us, do not make any sense.
+1. Ridiculous that it isn't available for Android. And it used to be available before they released the Car Thing (that was a huge flop and totally unecessary). Just bring it back. If you gave it on iOS you surely can bring it back to Android.

Google doesn't like me. That's the only assumption I can make when it consistently finds ways to make my life more difficult. Google+, Inbox, Pixelbook, these are dead Google products that I love, but at least I could find alternatives for them easily enough. The same can't be said for driving apps. Google has messed with its driving apps for the worse twice now, and it looks like it's about to happen again.
Google's first solution to create a driving interface for phones was perfect. To this day, I keep a photo of Android Auto for phones in my wallet that I look at whenever I want to remember happier, simpler times. The app did exactly what the name suggests; it put the UI from an Android Auto head unit on your phone. I drive a car made in 2011, with no plans to replace it, and putting my phone into my dash mount and having all the benefits of Android Auto was perfect. Google killed the app off along with Android 12 back in 2021, and things only worsened from then on.
Next, we had Assistant Driving Mode. It wasn't quite as flexible as Auto for phone screens, but it had all the functionality I needed. The new home screen showed all the relevant shortcuts, be it for starting a call, message, or media. And below them were app shortcuts for Google Maps and any music or podcast app you installed.
Just a year after Assistant Driving Mode replaced Auto for phone screens, Google decided to ruin it for me. I drive almost exclusively around my town, and I know these roads like the back of my hand. As such, I only use navigation when I'm leaving town. My primary usage for these driving apps was media control. Auto for phone screens and Assistant Driving Mode were perfect for this, keeping the display lit and providing a UI with big buttons that were easy to use while driving.
In 2022, Google decided to kill the home screen, making it so that Driving Mode would only ever show if you had Maps navigating somewhere. Every time I get in my car, I have to set some random destination and disable the navigation voice to pull up the media player I want. This alone is almost enough to make me leave YouTube Music and return to Spotify, which has its own car mode. I thought this was as bad as it would get, but this is Google, and as I said before, Google doesn't like me.
In December 2023, it was revealed that Google could remove the current Driving Mode version entirely. One of the strings inside the app, as discovered by 9to5Google, says Maps Driving mode is "going away in February." We haven't had any official word from Google yet, but this string was found in the app, and given the checkered history, would it be surprising if Google killed this off entirely?
If and when that happens, all that will be left is the basic UI pictured above, which can be accessed by saying, "OK, Google, launch driving mode." There are no media controls to speak of, just navigation. Maybe Google will announce something new before then, but I doubt it.
So, what's left for me to do? I don't plan on getting a new car soon; I like this one, and retrofitting an Android Auto unit into the car is an expensive process. There are a lot of portable Android Auto screens available now. These screens would sit in my dash mount instead of my phone and act as an external Android Auto head unit. That's probably the route I'll take at this point, but I'd really like to have the old app back.
In android auto the search is removed until the car is stopped. My passenger wants to search for a new location destination. Sadly we have to stop the car to do that. A prompt asking if you are the driver would be better, then allow them to search. How can waze assume all interaction must be the driver?? If the driver declares to be a passenger well that's driver negligence but stop All interaction to prevent that, this renders the app useless at times.
Also, when Waze is running in AA, the Waze app keeps crashing if you try to open it. I have to unplug my phone to change settings and replug. It is super annoying. Please allow us to search/change setting on phone even when Waze is running in AA.
Please remove the search bar while driving in Android Auto. Just do what you have done with Carplay, it looks so much better. On Android Auto, the search bar takes up a significant portion of the map.

I recently finished integrating a docking system in my 2005 Subaru Baja for my Asus Nexus 7 (2013). Here's a write-up about my project with some pictures and a parts list for anyone looking to do something similar.
A standard car radio is fine, but what if you want more functionality out of the space in your dashboard? You can choose to install upgrade components, such as a GPS, better sound system, backup camera, even an on-board computer. But these options can cost hundreds, if not thousands, for equipment and labor. I have enjoyed using an Android tablet for some time now, and realized that all of the functionality I wanted in my car was built right into this system. So, why not integrate the tablet into the dashboard of my car instead of messing with expensive upgrades? Well, that's exactly what I've done.
I began this project quite a while ago, and spent plenty of time researching on Google and forums for similar projects, compiling ideas and parts, and learning more about the software and hardware requirements for this build.
It's hard to describe this build in words, so showing you will give you the best idea of what this Instructable is all about. Also, if you feel so inclined, subscribe to my YouTube channel. JakeOfAllTrades. I will post more videos of projects and creations in the future. Enjoy!
