Dark Matter is a science fiction series that premiered in 2015, developed by Prodigy Pictures in association with the Space channel and the Syfy channel.[1] The concept was created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie while they were working on the Stargate franchise, and was originally published as a comic book series in 2012.

An order for 13 episodes was placed for the first season of the series, which premiered on June 12, 2015, on both Space and Syfy.[2][3] On September 5, 2015, the series was renewed for a second season.[4] Dark Matter was renewed for a third season in September 2016, which premiered on June 9, 2017.[5][6][7] On September 1, 2017, Syfy canceled the series.[8]

The third season began production on November 18, 2016.[33] Dark Matter's third season would be its last and the show's cancellation was announced in September 2017. According to Mallozzi in various interviews, the show was picked up by Syfy's acquisition division in New York, but it wasn't well received by the network's original programming division in Los Angeles.[34] In addition, while the series was outperforming several Syfy first-run programs, the network wasn't able to monetize the show because it was an acquisition.[35]

As of 21 March 2022, review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gave season 1 an approval rating of 68%, with an average rating of 5/10 based on reviews from 19 critics.[37] The sites consensus statement says: "... [the] premiere benefits from likable characters and a concluding twist, but its gaping plot holes and worn premise add up to an aimless episode." Metacritic gave the series an average score of 58 out of 100, based on reviews from 5 critics, indicating "Mixed or average reviews".[38] On Rotten Tomatoes season 2 received a 100% rating based on 7 reviews,[39] and season 3 also received a 100% rating based on 7 reviews.[40]

It was first announced in December 2020 that Apple TV+ had entered into development of a series adaptation of Blake Crouch's novel, with Crouch set to write and act as showrunner.[3] The series was officially greenlit in March 2022, with Apple ordering 9 episodes and Joel Edgerton cast to star. Louis Leterrier was set to direct the first four episodes.[4] By September 2022, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Oakes Fegley and Dayo Okeniyi joined the cast.[5][6][7] In December, Amanda Brugel would join the cast in a recurring role.[1]

This series gave me peace of mind, a safe place and distraction during a really tough time in my life. I even wrote Joseph back then, when he opened his mailbox to fans haha I was really really hyped about the series, ngl.

In my opinion, we should crowdfund something. Be it a digital Graphic Novel, or a Podcast, or an short Audio Book, something that gives the fourth season space to end the show properly. Imagine watching the first three season, reading the digital graphic novel and after the end, you watch the bloopers of the series like 20 times. That would be perfect.

A couple of miniseries to cover the planned arcs of Season 4 and Season 5 would be a lot more than nothing, but I would love it if there were two more full 13-episode seasons! Aim for the stars! (pun intended)

Ethan Nadler, a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Institution for Science and USC, discusses the search for dark matter physics in the sky and how next-generation telescopes will help us understand its fundamental nature. Most of the matter in the universe is dark; to date, all evidence for dark matter is based on how it affects visible matter, like stars and galaxies, through gravity.

Each cover in the Dark Matter series celebrates the beauty found in darkness and the scenes made by the faintest light. Let your creativity run wild in the black pages of these books.

This extra-thick 120 gsm black paper works great with gel pens (for the brightest colors, look for ones that are formulated to work on dark media, like our Supernova Pens), metallic pens, pastels, and even some paints!

The series follows Jason Dessen (Edgerton), a physicist, professor and family man who, while walking home on the streets of Chicago one night, is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the multiverse of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of mind-bending realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.

Dark Matter is based on the novel by Blake Crouch, who is writing and showrunning the series. He will exec produce alongside Edgerton, Matt Tolmach and David Manpearl for Matt Tolmach Productions. Jakob Verbruggen (Invasion) will direct the first three episodes.

The science fiction adventure series Dark Matter will one day return to our screens, if co-creator Joseph Mallozzi has his way. He reiterated in a post at his blog this week that he wants to revive the show, which only got to tell three years of its 5-year planned storyline.

Mallozzi has other irons in the fire, with a number of pitches developed for original science fiction and fantasy series. He is also serving as an executive producer and showrunner on a TV adaptation of the Powder Mage series of novels.

The cast of Dark Matter will be led by Australian actor Joel Edgerton, who also serves as executive producer. He is best known for his appearance in the Star Wars films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith as a young Owen Lars, a role he reprised in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The streamer, fresh off its best picture Oscar win for CODA, has handed out a nine-episode, straight-to-series order for drama Dark Matter, based on the Blake Crouch book of the same name. Joel Edgerton (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Boy Erased) will star in the sci-fi drama on which Crouch will serve as showrunner for the Sony Pictures Television series.

Blake Crouch is a bestselling novelist and screenwriter. His novels include Upgrade, Recursion, Dark Matter, and the Wayward Pines trilogy, which was adapted into a television series for FOX. Crouch also co-created the TNT show Good Behavior, based on his Letty Dobesh novellas. He is currently at work on a new book and showrunning the Dark Matter series adaptation for Apple TV+. Blake is based in Colorado.

It is my pleasure to serve as reviewer this season; I confess that I only got into this series when I spotted it on Netflix during its hiatus, but it really appealed to the Firefly fan in me. So let's get this show on the road and turn our attention to the season premiere!

Dark Matter season 4 is unlikely to happen after the show was canceled by Syfy after its third season despite solid ratings and a loyal fanbase - here's everything you need to know about a potential return. Dark Matter was originally conceived as a TV series by creators Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, but it was first turned into a limited series comic in 2012 by Dark Horse comics. Dark Matter was later picked up for a 13-episode TV series by Syfy in 2014, which finds the crew of a spaceship called Raza waking up from stasis with total amnesia.

Unlike a lot of TV series, Dark Matter actually had an ending in mind. Mallozzi mapped out a complete five-season story arc for the show, with season 3 ending on a big cliffhanger. Scripts were already being written for Dark Matter season 4 when Syfy canned the show, with a focus on the brewing android revelation. While Mallozzi was initially optimistic about finding a way to bring the show back for a proper finale, he appears to have accepted its now done.

The series improved with its second season before hitting its stride in the third, which had not a single weak installment and ended with a series of mind-boggling cliffhangers. Unfortunately, the show was then unceremoniously cancelled, going off the air just as it had moved past the midpoint of its planned five-season story arc.*

In effect, Dark Matter starts off with a group of recognizable archetypes, but like Lost, it then gradually molds these numbers into three-dimensional human beings. Suffice it to say, almost none of the characters on the series are who they initially seem to be, and yet they themselves do not know it. It is tempting to read the show as a cross between Dollhouse and Firefly, but that would be doing it a disservice.

This technique used to be quite common on television - many series, especially in the sci-fi genre, had to produce a bottle show or two per year out of necessity, so that other episodes could depict expensive events or action scenes. As the average production values of genre shows have grown considerably in the last 10 years or so, bottle episodes have become increasingly rare.

On average, it has less scenes per episode than 75 percent of other basic cable series. And with some rare exceptions, the show virtually has no extraneous scenes, nor forgotten or rushed plot developments. The writers take their time to gradually set up numerous mysteries about their protagonists before paying them off.

Dollhouse, after all, struggled to build a narrative around one amnesiac main character, whereas Dark Matter manages to succeed with six distinct individuals, providing a clear and coherent mythology from the get-go. Given the series\u2019 emphasis on memory, flashbacks are used extensively to reveal new details about the protagonists, in the process upending viewer expectations.
