Legalery Jean-Louis. Martin Hewings, Advanced Grammar in Use, A self-study reference and practice book for advanced learners of English. In: Cahiers de l'APLIUT, volume 18, numro 4, 1999. Le Bilan pdagogique des relations internationales. p. 123.
This book belongs to the same series as English Vocabulary in Use and is similar in size and format. It comes as a natural complement to the series initiated by Raymond Murphy, English Grammar in Use. Martin Hewings currently teaches at the University of Birmingham, after he spent some time teaching in the University of Sydney .
The book is organised in 120 units which are grouped under 17 headings. Each unit focuses on a specific area of grammar which is spread on two pages according to the traditional layout of the series: there are explanations on the left-hand page and practice exercises on the right. Answers to the exercises can be checked in the Key section which also provides the user with comments on the answers. The book includes four Appendices on how to use passive forms and irregular vebs, how to quote people and, in a very innovative way, how to deal with typical errors and correct them. There is also a grammatical Glossary which gives the basic words and expressions.
As in every handbook there are a few things the advanced learner may regret. Two big visual symbols are in use: a large exclamation mark leading the user to think that there might be some risks in the area and a gigantic west-oriented arrow advising an urgent look at the nearest available dictionary. These symbols would presumably be more appropriate in an elementary version. Furthermore the approach is essentially descriptive, which makes grammar fall into rigid categories that are not really functional.
As a matter of fact, Advanced Grammar in Use is a remarkable tool (the subtitle is accurate and illustrated all through the book) especially for first-year university students. It may even become a sort of bible for all those who will clearly understand, by using this book, that grammar is not another foreign language.
