Last week I talked about the fundamentals of coding and why it was an important skill to add to your digital marketing toolbox. To recap, learning skills such as coding give you perspective on what your fellow team members are up to. For every great strategy and idea is a developer with the very technical skills to bring your content to life. By learning the basics of how other team members do their jobs and what their skill-sets entail you can open up more efficient and productive communications while also gaining the respect of your colleagues. This week, with the hope of continuing my journey towards becoming a full stack marketer, I decided to learn about SQL and its uses for digital marketers.

Most databases are currently built in MySQL, which is essentially an open source database. So inherently it would make sense that SQL is the way for you to communicate with this database and generate specific information from it. Think about it kind of like excel, but if excel didn't require you to manipulate endless worksheets by hand and then do complex, not easily repeatable analysis. As Vault analytics puts it, "you can communicate directly with the database, extract exactly what you need, and because your procedure is there written in code and not lost in a series of manual copies, pastes, and filters, you can re-run it at any time and easily find and fix errors in your process".

Why is it important? Gone are the days of being a generalist or specialist. In todays marketing world you need to be able to do everything and do a few things really well. By learning SQL you can set yourself apart from the rest of the crowd and help your team manipulate data in ways only possible on a very small scale with excel. Moz, in their blog Every Marketer Should Be Technical states that, "the marketers who know SQL, can write code, leverage APIs, and perform quantitative analysis will be the most desirable and productive individuals in our industry. Those without these skills will find it increasingly difficult to find ideal career opportunities". If you look at the picture above you'll notice that at the very top of the list for being a technical marketer/1 kick-ass employee is databases and SQL. Some benefits that can be reaped by using SQL include:

Learning SQL: Building off the success of using Code Academy last week to learn the basics of coding, I decided to again use the program to learn the fundamentals of SQL. As I worked through the program I was blown away by how useful this technology could be for sifting through data. The tutorials had me learning how to use and apply queries that would work through and organize/manipulate my data set based on my specifications. By using clauses such as "CREATE TABLE" or more complex lines (shown below) I was able to find patterns in the data, across different tables and use that to find relationships between variables all from query that I created. My data sets were linking pretty intuitive things such as albums, artists, years, and sales, but for a big company links found in data using SQL queries could be crucial for finding important buying patterns in a certain demographic.

Conclusion: The ability to use SQL to manipulate big data sets is becoming extremely important for marketers. By adding this skill to your toolbox you can create insights and find patterns that could only be dreamed of on Excel. After working through Code Academy and reading about SQL, I really see the value in knowing how to use the language and am super excited to apply it in the future to find my own unique patterns in data and create unique and important insights for my employer.
