You will be presented with an IBM SPSS Statistics window. Since these windows look slightly different if you have the subscription version of SPSS Statistics compared to SPSS Statistics version 28 or earlier versions of SPSS Statistics, we show you these two different windows in the two sections that follow: (a) the IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription window for the subscription version of SPSS Statistics; and (b) the IBM SPSS Statistics XX window (i.e., "XX" is where the version number is displayed) for SPSS Statistics version 28 and earlier versions of SPSS Statistics.

Look into boot camping your Mac if it allows you to, I'm not sure which models are the cutoff for this feature. I did this with windows and then downloaded SPSS on that (you can download the Microsoft ISO for the bootcamp from their website which is free and I think it has instructions). My SPSS came with two computer locations, if yours just came with one you will have to buy another one but it's the only solution I found.

` This book is meant to teach beginners the operation of SPSS for windows. The language is lucid. One's questions on the data are answered, the commands are explained and the outputs shown....I was marvelled when I finished reading the text' - Psychology in Africa

This course provides an introduction to the SPSS spreadsheet-like interface. Specifically, we will review the SPSS windows (mentioned below) and execute a small SPSS program. In the interest of time we will not type in any data but use the Anxiety.sav SPSS sample data file. Thus the section on Entering and Editing Data is provided only for reference.

Using the Journal File to Create a Syntax File
By default, SPSS records all commands executed during a session to a journal file named spss.jnl . Open the journal file using the text editor of your choice. The journal file is located in the Windows temporary directory (usually: c:windowstemp). Copy from the journal file and paste to the Syntax window. Make sure you remove (delete) all notes and warning messages. Save the Syntax window for later use.

"It is a clearly written guide, suitable for undergraduates or maybe Masters level students with no prior experience of statistical analysis. The basic, important and necessary areas, such as probability, sampling, regression and analysis of variance are included, with enough detail (and reproduction of SPSS dialogue boxes and windows for up to version 13) to make the whole thing easy to follow." (Amanda Root, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Vol. 169 (4), 2006)

SPSS Statistics has three main windows, plus a menu bar at the top. These allow you to (1) see your data, (2) see your statistical output, and (3) see any programming commands you have written. Each window corresponds to a separate type of SPSS file.

As with the other types of windows, you can have more than one Syntax Editor open and the active window is marked with a tiny orange plus sign. When you paste syntax from dialog boxes, it goes to the active Syntax Editor. If you close out all your Syntax Editors and then paste a command, a fresh Syntax Editor is opened.

Now that you understand the basics of using the SPSS windows, you can learn how to carry out statistical tasks by reading part two of SPSS for Students. It covers common statistics, regression, and graphs.
