| | FACEBOOK, WE NEED TO TALK!
This week a broad coalition has launched a petition to prevent Facebook from caving in to pressure from the Israeli government and some of its supporters to redefine any critique of Zionism as hate speech and inherently antisemitic.
The goal is 25,000 signatures on the petition, addressed to Mark Zuckerberg & Sheryl Sandberg, which will be delivered in-person to Facebook offices around the world on a Global Day of Action, Feb. 24. Please sign and share this petition What would redefining Facebook's "hate speech" policy mean in practice?
**Palestinians would be unable to talk about the impact of Zionism on their human rights, both in Israel and the occupied territories, where the violence of Zionist settlers is a daily reality.
**The Jewish community would be unable to discuss and debate their many relationships to Zionist political ideology.
**It would silence the conversation and critical work underway to expose the underlying antisemtism and Islamophobia in Christian Zionism.
**Conflating criticism of the political ideology of Zionism with antisemitism undermines efforts to dismantle real antisemitism.
**The world needs to talk about holding the Israeli government accountable, like all governments must be held accountable, by bringing to light human rights violations on the largest social media platform.

*************************** KEEPING AN EYE ON BIDEN'S NOMINEES |
|
|
During her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Jan. 27, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, President Biden's nominee for UN envoy, said that she finds the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against Israel "unacceptable," saying that "it verges on antisemitism, and it is important that they not be allowed to have a voice at the United Nations." (Photo Greg Nash/AP) She will have support for her views from the newly appointed Israeli Ambassador to both the U.S. and the U.N., Gilad Erdan.
Erdan’s most notable work to date has been his efforts in combating the BDS Movement. He has exerted diplomatic, economic and legal pressure on anyone connected with the group. He coordinated anti-BDS efforts with the Mossad, and worked to establish a database of Israeli citizens who promoted and supported the movement. He also urged Israelis to cooperate with the state in ridding the country of foreigners who support BDS and promoted a law that prevents proponents of boycott from entering Israel. He compared pro-boycott advocates to those supporting boycotts of Jewish-owned businesses in Nazi Germany. |

OPPOSITION TO THE BDS MOVEMENT CONTINUES TO PROMOTE ELECTIBILITY IN THE U.S.
Progressives mourned the pressure put on the Rev.Raphael Warnock to walk-back his support for Palestinian human rights during his campaign in Georgia, resulting in his endorsement by the Democratic Majority for Israel.
Last week we were treated to presidential candidate and now New York mayoral candidate Andrew Yang positioning himself with a BDS declaration in the Forward. "A Yang administration will push back against the BDS movement, which singles out Israel for unfair economic punishment. Not only is BDS rooted in antisemitic thought and history, hearkening back to fascist boycotts of Jewish businesses, it’s also a direct shot at New York City’s economy," he wrote.
Progressive Jewish organizations denounced Yang's implicit comparison to boycotts of Jewish business in Nazi Germany, describing Yang's "false equivalencies" as dangerous and unneccesary. |
