Subject: Join me in supporting Palestinian children

Dear Mary,
I have always felt that we can’t separate national from international political dynamics. At this historical juncture, as we watch in horror and mobilize against U.S. government atrocities in ICE detention camps, we need to remember that the reach of U.S. imprisonment policies goes far beyond our borders.
Right now, while immigrant children are suffering in unimaginable conditions at the hands of our government, U.S. taxpayer dollars are also pouring into Israel to support the imprisonment of Palestinian children.
As we march to detention centers in "Never Again" actions around the country, we must be sure to say "Never Again” includes Palestinians.
Which is why I’ve signed a letter from over 100 activists, writers, rabbis, and leaders calling on Congress to protect Palestinian children from Israeli military detention.

Israeli authorities routinely arrest Palestinian children for “crimes” like throwing stones or being at the “wrong" place; they are physically, verbally and emotionally abused as soon as they are arrested, forbidden from seeing their parents for months on end, and detained without charges. Then they are tried in Israeli military courts, a kangaroo court system with a 99% conviction rate.
It is abhorrent for any state to treat any child this way. And it’s equally abhorrent that the U.S. continues to give Israel billions in military aid while these practices continue.
And we can do something about it.
There is a real change afoot in how people think about Israel/Palestine – and even in how the mainstream media reports on it. But what we need most urgently are specific and strategic campaign vehicles to actually transform policy.
When we stand against U.S. attacks on immigrant families, we must also stand against Israel’s ongoing attacks on Palestinian families and Palestinian human rights.
The choice Rep. Betty McCollum’s legislation puts before Congress is simple: Should the U.S. pay to put children in military prisons?
There is no question that Israel will continue violating the rights of children as long as the U.S. supports it.
And there is no question that U.S. support will continue until we change the political calculus politicians work by.
This legislation helps us do that.

It has taken a long time for a member of Congress to introduce legislation that supports Palestinian human rights – and Rep Betty McCollum’s bill, H.R. 2407, Promoting Human Rights for Palestinian Children Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act, is a milestone.
Please join me in adding your name and support
Sincerely,
