Aishwarya Rajesh (born 10 January 1990) is an Indian actress who works predominantly in Tamil films along with Malayalam and Telugu films. Aishwarya is a recipient of four South Indian International Movie Awards, one Filmfare Award South and one Tamil Nadu State Film Award.[2]

Aishwarya Rajesh was born on 10 January 1990 in a Telugu family in Chennai (then Madras).[10][11][12] Her father Rajesh was a Telugu film actor.[13][14] He died when Aishwarya was young.[15] Her mother Nagamani was a dancer.[16] Her grandfather Amarnath was also a Telugu film actor,[14] while her aunt Sri Lakshmi, is a Telugu comedian with over 500 films to her credit.[15] She is the youngest of four siblings, of whom two elder brothers died during her teenage years.[12]

Aishwarya was brought up in Chennai, and she described her background as "lower middle class."[12] She did her schooling in Shrine Vailankanni, Chennai, Sree Vidyanikethan International School, Tirupati, and Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, Chennai.[17] In 1995, she performed as a child in the Telugu film Rambantu.[18]

She studied at Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai and graduated with a B.Com degree.[19] She started to learn dance since she needed to choreograph a stage show for a student cultural fest and later entered the reality show Maanada Mayilada on Kalaignar TV. She won the show's third season and got offered roles in films thereafter.[15]

In the early stages of her career, Aishwarya also worked as an anchor on the sets of the TV show Asathapovathu Yaaru.[20] In 2010, she was cast in her first film Avargalum Ivargalum (2011) although Indrasena (2010) and Neethana Avan (2010) were released first.[21][22][23] Her first big hit was the critically acclaimed Attakathi in 2012, where she was cast as Amudha, a simple village girl, by Pa. Ranjith in his debut as a director. In 2014, she was seen alongside Vijay Sethupathi in two films, Rummy, and Pannaiyarum Padminiyum, released within two weeks. While the first film was a village drama set in the 1980s, the latter was based on a short film of the same name, and revolved around an old man and his vintage car Premier Padmini.[24][25] Critics praised her performances, especially in Rummy.[26][27] Hindustan Times wrote that she was "extremely promising"[28] while film critic Baradwaj Rangan noted that she was "expressive", calling her "a tonic for nerves frayed by the alabaster automatons we usually get as heroines".[29][30] Later that year, she appeared in a song sequence in R. Parthiepan's Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam and as the female lead in Thirudan Police.[31] In April 2014, she began filming for Seenu Ramasamy's Idam Porul Yaeval, but the film remains unreleased as of May 2020.[32]

Her first release in 2015 was Kaaka Muttai. Initially, she was very hesitant to play a mother role at such an early stage in her career, but, after seeking advice from her Pannaiyarum Padminiyum co-star Vijay Sethupathi and after gaining interest in the script herself, she decided to be part of the film. Her portrayal of a slum dweller and mother of two children was lauded unanimously by critics and is regarded as one of "100 Greatest Performances of the Decade" by Film Companion. Critic Baradwaj Rangan wrote, "it features stunning performances from everyone...especially Aishwarya Rajesh, who plays the kids' mother with a world-weariness that belies her years".[33] Other reviewers stated that she was "excellent",[34] played her role "with extraordinary ease"[35] and that she "leaves you awe-struck".[36][37] That year, she also made her stage debut, playing Cinderella from the same-titled fairytale that was adapted as a "musical dance drama".[38][39]

Aishwarya had the most releases for a Tamil actress in 2016 with 8 films out of which Aarathu Sinam, Hello Naan Pei Pesuren, Manithan and Dharma Durai were commercially successful. She was critically appreciated for her performance in the films Dharma Durai and Kuttrame Thandanai, where she collaborated with Kaaka Muttai director Manikandan. She became the number one choice for acting in performance oriented roles in the industry. In 2017, Aishwarya made her entry in Malayalam films acting in two commercially and critically successful films Jomonte Suvisheshangal and Sakhhavu. Based on her performance in Kaaka Muttai, Arjun Rampal selected Aishwarya in the role of Zubeida for the film Daddy. With this, Aishwarya made her debut in Hindi and was recognized for her performance in her first Hindi film.[40][41][42][43] In 2018, she completed shooting for Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kathai. The film remained unreleased as of April 2020.[44]

She starred in her solo film as a cricketer in Kanaa under Sivakarthikeyan's production.[45] She reprised her role in the Telugu remake Kousalya Krishnamurthy, which marked her lead Telugu debut.[46] She starred in sister roles in Namma Veettu Pillai and Vaanam Kottatum.[47][48] She played a village belle in World Famous Lover.[49] She played a woman who lost her husband in Dubai in Ka Pae Ranasingam. Regarding her performance, a critic noted that "Aishwarya Rajesh is a revelation. She displays hopelessness, powerlessness, vulnerability, grit and determination with ease and impressive conviction".[50] Subsequently, she performed in leading roles such as Thittam Irandu (2021), Boomika (2021) and Driver Jamuna (2022). The action thriller, Run Baby Run (2023) with RJ Balaji has received positive response.[51] While, The Great Indian Kitchen (2023), Aishwarya Rajesh saves the Tamil remake of the brilliant family drama.[52]

Aishwarya has frequently featured in Chennai Times' 30 Most Desirable Woman list. Actress Aishwarya aka Aishwarya Bhaskar is an actress who once starred as a heroine to superstars in several Malayalam and Tamil films. The actress paired up with Mohanlal in films like Butterflies, Narasimham and Praja. Her other notable films are Jackpot, Satyameva Jayate, Sharjah to Sharjah and Notebook.
Aishwarya was also active in television serials. However, the actress has been absent from movies and serials in recent times. Aishwarya clarified the reasons for her absence in an interview with Tamil media.

During the interview, Aishwarya revealed that she had no job, no money and led a living by selling soap on the street. Aishwarya said that she was interested in doing movies and hoped that someone will call.

"I don't have work. I have no money. I am leading a living by selling soap on the streets. No debts. I'm the only one in my family. I'm the only one in my family. My daughter got married and left. I do not hesitate to do any work. If you give me a job in your office tomorrow, I will accept that too. I will clean the toilet and go back happily," Aishwarya said.

"Divorce was necessary for me. The relationship seemed to go awry six months into the marriage. We got divorced when the baby was one and a half years old. Now, I have a good relationship with my ex-husband and his wife," she said.

"I did not spend money on alcohol or for myself. I spent the money on my family. My career graph spanned three years, and my marriage took place within three years after I started acting. With that, I left the film industry. Not everyone will have Nayanthara's graph in their second innings as heroine. I want to give my daughter the best. I'm working independently for it. I have a youtube channel, and then this soap sale. My daughter is proud that I'm living as an independent person," Aishwarya added.

'While narrating a scene to Amitji, Akshay and Tusshar, they learnt that Aishwarya was not the heroine opposite Akshay as they had presumed.'
'She had a negative role.'
'They were shocked, more so when they learnt that she didn't know this.'
'"Shooting will stop midway, she won't do the film", I was warned.'

And if that wasn't enough, in a surprise twist, he made the numero uno heroine of the time turn bad, putting a gun in her hand which she uses to knock out the hero. And Santoshi kept this a secret from Aishwarya till just before they shot the climax.

We were shooting in Nashik when while narrating a scene to Amitji, Akshay and Tusshar who were playing DCP Anant Kumar Shrivastav, Senior Inspector Shekhar Verma and Sub-Inspector Ashwin Gupte, they learnt that Aishwarya was not the heroine opposite Akshay as they had presumed.

They insisted they wanted to be around when I was narrating the climax to Aishwarya so they could see her expression when it sunk in that Mahalaxmi was not the distraught school teacher she was pretending to be.

Gratified, I pointed out that I had kept this secret to myself for so long because I did not want her to betray the fact that Mahalaxmi is not what she appears to be in any way, through gesture or expression, in the earlier scenes. That would kill the suspense.

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was published for the first time 200 years ago this month, in three hardcover volumes costing 18 shillings (90p). Austen sold the copyright to a Mr Thomas Egerton of Whitehall for 110, and he soon made more than four times that from the first two editions of the book, both published in 1813. In the same year, the novel also appeared in French.
