GomalUniversity (Urdu: جامعہ گومل), is a public research university located in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Founded and established in 1974, the university is one of the oldest institutions in the country and occupies one of the largest campuses in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.[1]

Gomal University is one of the reputable universities in Pakistan offering a wide range of courses both at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels besides research degree programs in most of the departments.[1] It consisted of four faculties of science, with a strong emphasis on natural and medical sciences courses. Gomal University is affiliated with the Higher Education Commission and the National Testing Service.


The university was founded by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and the donation came from Nawab Allah Nawaz Khan, who donated a large area of his land to the establishment of the university.[2] Nawab Allah Nawaz Khan Saddozai was also Gomal University's first vice-chancellor in 1974.[2]


Gomal University was established as a chartered and co-educational university.[4] The university is the 12th oldest university in terms of HEC's seniority listings. The university was founded by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who laid the establishment of Gomal University in D.I.Khan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province.[5] Prime Minister Bhutto laid down the foundation stone of Gomal University on 1 May 1974 putting forward his educational policy of highly educated Pakistan to meet the challenges of the modern world in every aspect of life. Notably, the donations and land were provided by Nawab Allah Nawaz Khan who served as the university's first and founding vice-chancellor. Nawaz Khan donated 11000 Kn agricultural land to the establishment of the university.


The Act No. X of 1974 provides the constitutional establishment of the university as a public research university categorization of the Ministry of Education.[5] The post-graduate schools of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, States, and Economics were founded in 1974.[6] The business school[7] and the school of mass communication[8] were founded in 1974 as well. In 1975, the Department of Pharmacy started its classes.[9] The faculty of agriculture was established and began its classes in December 1979.[10]


The Institute of Engineering and Technology of Gomal University grants Bachelor of Science degrees in tele-systems, electronics, and telecommunications engineering disciplines.[11] The school also awards a Master of Science degree in Telecommunications Network.[11] Gomal University also grants undergraduate degrees in law.[12] The institute also awards bachelor's degrees in the following disciplines:


The Law College is one of the constituent colleges of Gomal University dedicated to the promotion of legal education.[14] The Law College grants the LLB degree and it consisted of 11 registered faculty members in the Law college.[14]


The Gomal College of Veterinary Sciences was established as the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences.[15] The college grants Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine academic degrees.[15] The college is under the jurisprudence of the Ministry of Food Agriculture and Livestock.[15]


The university offers master programmes in physics,[16] chemistry,[17] mathematics,[18] economics,[19] and biological science.[20] The research on physics began in 1974 after the physics department gained independence from Peshawar University the following year. Earlier, the Physics Department was established in the Government Post-Graduate College (GPGC) under the University of Peshawar in 1968 and was transferred to Gomal University in 1974. During the same time, scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan joined the research faculty and briefly taught courses on physics as a visiting professor. Gomal University currently focuses its research and development in radiation physics, particle physics, plasma physics, and computational physics (as well as Monte Carlo integration).


In 2020, multiple women including students and faculty accused Professor Hafiz Salahuddin of sexual misconduct. The university then fired him after allegations of sexual harassment against him were proved.[21][22] In 2021, Assistant Professor Muhammad Zubair of Political Science was fired after allegations of sexual harassment against him were proven.[23]


DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A division bench of the Peshawar High Court, Dera Ismail Khan, on Monday suspended the acting vice-chancellor of the Gomal University and directed the advocate general to respond within a week to the petition against the additional charge of the top university office to University of Agriculture VC Prof Masroor Elahi Babar.


The petitioner, who also filed two civil miscellaneous applications along with the petition, said Prof Babar should be immediatelyremoved as the acting VC of the Gomal University and all actions taken by him in that position should be suspended.


The civil miscellaneous application called for the suspension of the transfer of the assets of the Gomal University, including around 4,000 students, buildings, animals and other agricultural assets, to the Agriculture University.


The court accepted both requests of the petitioner issued a stay order temporarily stopping the acting vice-chancellor of the Gomal University Prof Babar from exercising any powers from that office and suspended all orders and measures issued by him since assuming the charge of the office on Sept 19, 2022.


DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Senior Dean of Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (FVAS) Prof Dr Shakib Ullah has been appointed as pro-vice chancellor of the Gomal University. He assumed the charge of the office on Friday.


According to a notification issued late on Thursday night, Acting Governor KP/Chancellor of Gomal University Mushtaq Ghani, has appointed the Dean of Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Prof Dr Shakib Ullah as pro-vice chancellor of Gomal University for two years under Article 105 of the Constitution of Pakistan and section 12-A(1) of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities Act, 2012, on the advice of Chief Minister Mahmood Khan.


Earlier, the chancellor had sent Gomal varsity VC Prof Dr Iftikhar Ahmed on 90 days forced leave due to legally resisting the distribution of assets of Gomal University with the Agriculture University, DI Khan.


Local lawyer Ahmad Ali Khan challenged this decision in the DI Khan Division Bench of the Peshawar High Court. On Oct 10, the bench comprising Justice Faheem Wali Khan and Justice Shahid Khan suspended the orders of acting Governor Mushtaq Ghani and removed Prof Masroor Elahi as acting VC of Gomal University.


DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Gomal University Vice-Chancellor Dr Iftikhar Ahmad has requested the police to provide him with security and register an FIR against former federal minister Ali Amin Gandapur for allegedly hurling threats at him and instigating the former students to protest after their expulsion from the hostels.


Meanwhile, the management closed the varsity for an indefinite period on Tuesday to avert any untoward incident in view of the continuing protests by what it said the former students, who were expelled from hostels by the vice-chancellor.


It is to mention here that a private TV channel ran an audiotape, in which Mr Amin Gandapur criticises Gomal University VC Dr Iftikhar Ahmad for his alleged failure to resolve the issue of assets distribution to the newly-established Agriculture University, Dera Ismail Khan.


The letter stated that he (Ali Amin) was creating troubles in the university through instigating what he said former varsity students to protest. The VC said the former minister served the protesters with meals and also sent them sound system on the university premises.


However, Chancellor Mushtaq Ghani, who is also the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker, hit back at the vice-chancellor, directing him to ensure prompt implementation of the decisions of a cabinet committee regarding distribution of assets between the newly-established Agriculture University, Dera, and the Gomal University.


In a letter issued to the management of Gomal University on Tuesday, Mr Ghani castigated it over the lingering liabilities issue entrusted to it by a committee constituted by the provincial cabinet on March 16, 2021.


A press release issued by the police said that district police officer Captain retired Najmul Hasnain Liaquat was in close coordination with DSP Paroa circle Kashif Sattar and the SHO University police station to maintain peace on the campus.


PESHAWAR: Another vice-chancellor of a public sector university was removed from the position and two more were sent on forced leave on the charges of opposing government decisions, violating the laid down procedures, committing irregularities and misusing official authority. The formal notifications to this effect were issued on Tuesday.


The vice-chancellor who was removed from the office was Prof Dr Iftikhar Ahmad of Gomal University, while those sent on forced leave include Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi of Women University Swabi and Dr Mohammad Jamal Khattak of the University of Swat.

Gomal University has played a vital role in Pakistan's educational development through its academic and research achievements. It stands as a testament to the vision and efforts of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Nawab Allah Nawaz Khan.


Today, Gomal University is one of Pakistan's largest and most renowned universities, with nine faculties and 58 departments. Currently, the university hosts over 24,000 students, reflecting its status as one of the country's largest institutions in both quality and size.


Recent controversies have emerged regarding recruitment practices at Gomal University, Agricultural University Dera, and Lucky University. Dr. Shakeebullah, who is currently the acting Vice-Chancellor of three universities, refuted allegations of corruptions and emphasized that the hiring processes are fair and merit-based. He asserted that acting Vice-Chancellors are typically limited to handling day-to-day matters and do not have the authority for new recruitments, raising concerns over the legitimacy of the recent postings.
