In the style of Quake, the game features single-player and multiplayer game modes and contains an in-game level editor. The game engine is free and open-source software under the zlib License[4] with commercial support available from the developer's business counterpart, Dot3 Labs.[5]
The game media is released under various non-free licenses. The aim of the project is not to produce the most features and highest-quality graphics possible but rather to provide real-time, in-game map editing while keeping the engine source code small and elegant.
Cube 2 features singleplayer and multiplayer, the latter offering LAN, local, and online play. The game features multiple modes, such as deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and variations thereof. Players can also engage in online cooperative map editing. Single-player modes feature both episodic gameplay and deathmatches on multiplayer maps with AI bots instead of human opponents.
Cube 2: Sauerbraten uses a 6-directional heightfield (or octree) world model. An octree, in Sauerbraten, is a cube that can be split into eight smaller cubes; those smaller cubes are also octrees, and can be subdivided further. This allows much more complex level geometry and easier editing.
Each cube-shaped node in the octree represents a renderable volume, or a type of Marching cube, which are referred to as a cube, where each edge of this cube can be lengthened or shortened to deform the cube into a variety of other shapes. Corners of cubes can also be "pushed" or "pulled" to create crude curves. The what you see is what you get realtime editing has enabled level designers to add a lot of detail to maps, while reducing the time spent on actual creation. This is in contrast to traditional modern polygon soup 3D engines which take a model generated as an essentially random batch of triangles from an external modelling program and attempt to spatially subdivide the model's triangles after the fact by splitting them to fit into tree structures, such as a BSP tree or even an octree, that require costly pre-processing to build. Cube 2's novelty thus lies in that the world representation is the octree, or Marching cubes, structure itself, from which efficient triangle batches are generated for the graphics processing unit to render, without need for expensive and time-consuming pre-processing.[23]
The game has been shown in a Burger King television commercial.[24][25] It also received four out of five stars in a MacWorld UK review[26] and was mentioned in issue 3 of Games for Windows: The Official Magazine (as well as their "101 Free Games" article), where it was described as being "perfect for both stingy and creative gamers alike".[27]
The "CTF Edition" was reviewed positively by Phoronix, a Linux-focused hardware and software review website,[28] as well as Linux.com,[29] a website providing news related to free and open-source software. PC World recommended the in-game editor for amateur game design.[30]
Free single and multi player 1st person shooter game with some satisfying fast oldskool gameplay. A large variety of gameplay modes from classic SP to fast 1 on 1 MP and objective based teamplay, with a great variety of original maps to play on.
Level editing has never been so much fun: a press of a key allows you to modify the geometry / textures / entities in-game, on the fly. Even more novel, you can make maps together with others online, in the unique "coop edit" mode (!)
The engine, though designed for simplicity and elegance as opposed to feature & eyecandy checklists, still competes nicely thanks to its novel "6-directional heighfield deformable cube octree" world structure that is the basis for its in-game editing. Occlusion culling, pixel & vertex shaders, very accurate lightmapping, robust custom physics system, network system, models, sound, scripting...
Cube is the original game that started it all. Though it has been surpassed in almost every way by Cube 2, it is a game in its own right. Most importantly, it comes with over 100 (!) maps, most of which are not available in Cube 2, with extensive single and multi player content.
Cube is also smaller in every way, in download, in hardware requirements (runs well on older video cards!), and in source code (the absolutely tiny code base is a very easy start for those wishing to experiment).
AssaultCube is probably the best Cube "mod" ever created. It comes with all new content and is playable asa standalone game. The gameplay provides a more "realistic" gameplay experience than Cube, featuring more modern weaponry and environments. Many gameplay modesare provided including CTF.
I have long loved German food, German culture, and the German language. I even lived in Frankfurt for a time, and the very first meal I ever ate in Germany was a plate of sauerbraten with spaetzle and rotkohl, and you can bet I ate the whole thing. Even though I was jetlagged beyond belief at the time, the memory of that amazing traditional German pot roast has stayed with me for over 10 years!
This classic German pot roast is perfect for celebrating Oktoberfest! Be sure to try some of my other favorite German recipes, including German Plum Cake, Homemade German Spaetzle, and German Apple Strudel (Apfelstrudel) for something a bit different too!
Making sauerbraten authentically requires the meat to be marinated for anywhere from 2 to 10 days in a mixture of red wine, vinegar, and spices. Afterward, the meat is both tenderized and deeply flavored. Traditionally, the cut of meat used for sauerbraten, like rump roast, are tougher than other choice cuts of meat.
The secret to the BEST sauerbraten is to get the marinade deeply soaked into the meat for that amazing rich flavor! Bear in mind too, that the longer the meat marinates, the less time it will take to cook!
I made this today. Overall, it was good, my husband really liked it, which was my goal! I marinated in my crockpot crock for 6 days, turning. I cooed in my crockpot for 8 hours. I personally found the meant to be well flavored, but a bit dry. However once you make the gravy from the reserved liquids and ginger snaps it adds a whole new dimension. Made with braised red cabbage and spaetzle.
Sounds wonderful. I am cooking for a crowd and would like to perhaps cook ahead of time. How does the recipe do as far as preparing ahead of time? If like pot roast, it might be better the second day?
Thank you for your help.
My first time making or tasting Sauerbraten. My husband is a Wisconsin native and he pronounced this delicious.I marinated it 5 plus days/had to use extra red wine as my full bottle of red wine vinegar was not enough. Made mashed potatoes per my husband request. Was a complete success.
Except for the addition of the vegetables, this seems more complicated than the way my great aunt always made it who was full-blooded German.
She took about a 5 lb roast of top around or bottom round and put a whole container of pickling spice in cheesecloth, submerged it in the water with a roast, boiled it for about 2 hours and then left it marinating in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. She then alternated cider vinegar and white sugar to taste then made her gravy and served it over either mashed potatoes or egg noodles. Sometimes she would saute bread crumbs to sprinkle on top and it not only became a family favorite but I have a friend who requests it specifically for her birthday dinner each year. I believe all the spices you list would be generally included in a jar of pickling spice anyway so there would be no need to list them separately. Otherwise, the addition of the vegetables including the garlic would be a good variation.
I grew up in the deep south so my diet consisted of southern fare. Long before I-95 made it to north Florida there were motels scattered along US1 with accompanying restaurants. One of these establishments was named The Kettle and was operated by a German lady named Elsie. Her signature dish was sauerbraten, red cabbage and potato pancakes. Desert was Apple strudel or Cheesecake. I knew absolutely nothing about German cuisine but I loved that food! This is as close to that as I have ever tasted and it brought back fond memories. Thanks for sharing!
The meals at the Ox Yoke Inn are served family-style. My favorite thing to order is the Sauerbraten with Spaetzle noodles. I live too far away to stop by for dinner, (obviously). I like to replicate the flavor at home with this easier version of Sauerbraten. It cooks in the slow cooker and makes a great Sunday meal when you want something a little different.
I live in Iowa and have been going to The Amana Colonies since I was just a little girl. As a matter of fact, I was married in the winter and I spent my honeymoon there. It is a fantastic place to spend time and just relax. So many things to look at, shop for, and the food is to die for. I have had the Sauerbraten at the Ox Yoke Inn, I cant wait to try this recipe. I wish you could go more often because it is such a treat. thanks for promoting our beautiful Amana's so more people can maybe take advantage of them.

My husband and I enjoyed Sauerbraten when we lived in Germany, but I haven't really thought much about it until I saw your recipe. Thanks for sharing this. I need to make it and bring back good memories. I also will stop at the places you recommend if I'm ever in that neck of the woods. thanks.
I had to laugh at What A Blast's comment b/c I thought the same thing: What is this? Only to find that nothing out of the ordinary is needed. I'm digging the idea of gingersnap gravy. Thank you for sharing this week.
I have been wanting an easy sauerbraten recipe and who better to get a deliously easy one than from you Jamie! We have a German restaurant nearby and I love the sauerbraten ans spaetzle! I have everything but the ginger snaps but a quick trip to the store will fix that!! Pinning!
I love truck stops. When I was in high school we used to like to hang out at a truck stop diner. There were telephones in each booth. This sounds like an awesome stick to your ribs kinda meal. Thanks for sharing it on foodie friday.
