Before we step in to the new year, 2018, preparing and gearing ourselves up to achieve new goals and milestones to mark 2018 a success, I wanted to write and share about this movie, My Secret Superstar, that touched me the most this year and some lessons that I took away from it. I hope, I keep them in my mind throughout the year, in the good, the bad and the blah times..and keep moving ahead in my journey.
These takeaways are so relevant and important for anyone who is trying to break out of their shell, shed the old skin, embrace who they truly are and leap to become the superstar of their lives and eventually for the world.
The struggle of Insiya (central character of the movie played by Zaira Wasim) shown in the movie is so real and relatable and something that I am sure lakhs of children would be going through and many adults would have already gone through in their childhood.
Action is Primary. Without Action there is no Reaction i.e. No Returns, No Progress and mostly No Success. No matter how many great ideas, talent or inspiration you have within you, unless you do something with it, channelize it into something constructive, it would be rather foolish to expect people to just discover the star within you or to get good opportunities to make it big.
Limitations, surprises and setbacks mostly hit us totally out of the blue. They somehow restrict our flight and tie our hands up. Even with all the enthusiasm and desire to do many things and take action we are not able to make progress and can tend to feel confined and constrained.
In the latter part of the movie, Insiya is told by her grandmother, that even giving her birth was a big battle for her mother and she did everything possible to bring her into this world and to give her this life. Her mother may seem stupid and someone who cannot differentiate between right and wrong, good and bad, however she stuck her neck out for her daughter throughout her life and it is her love that gave her the strength to go on in life, despite all difficulties. Knowing this, Insiya started seeing her mother in a different light and developed a deep appreciation for the depth of her love and the strength of her character.
Standing beside those, who have stood for you when you were in need, is the least one can do in a relationship. It may not be as easy as it may seem and sometimes may require one to sacrifice their personal preferences, dreams & desires. Having said that, if we are not able to gather the love, patience and strength required to nurture and support our loved ones in difficult times, then what are the chances we will be able to gather enough love, patience and strength to pull our own self through the long and winding road towards success full of unexpected twists and turns.
Many successful people have shared that they experienced more happiness and fulfillment through human interactions either at work or in their personal lives. More money and more possessions did not add significantly to the intensity of happiness experienced. Hence it is important to keep success and relationships in a careful balance with a long-term perspective to have a personally meaningful and emotionally fulfilling life.
We have heard this one many times and seen many real-life examples of people chasing dreams that were too far-fetched for them and making them come true. For e.g. Dhirubhai Ambani, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Poorna Malavath, Sylvester Stallone, Oprah Winfrey, J K Rowling and many more.
To all those people, I earnestly urge, to not let go of your talent, of your gifts and recognize them. They would not be like some crazy ass superpower like you can fly or something, it would actually be pretty simple and of this world..maybe you are an amazing cook..or have a great sense of color and aesthetics, or extremely empathetic and you just exactly know what people want and how they feel, or an extremely patient teacher, or great with kids, or really good at convincing and influencing people, or you have a really unique way of thinking and an independent mind and if you have a vision for yourself or for your art then keep taking small or big steps to use it in a way that brings happiness and pleasure to you and to others.
Reading stories and watching movies of how ordinary people became super successful or superstars in their league is something I really enjoy and it gives me utmost thrill and sometimes even goose bumps. Unfailingly & undoubtedly, I have observed this pattern and come to this conclusion that on the road towards being extraordinary, you will, for sure come across multiple risks, they are unavoidable. You will have to face them, pray, prepare and take off to land on an even higher plane. There are no two ways around it...
One sees their dazzle in Insiya (Zaira Wasim), a 10th grade school kid from Vadodara, a burkha-clad breakout star on YouTube and a rebel with a cause who ardently believes she's meant for bigger and better.
As the consequence of a hostile mood at home prompted by its brutish, burned out bread winner, Insiya's pop star aspirations serve more than a romantic fancy; it's her defence and driving force to break out from a stifling, suppressed existence and, while she's at it, facilitates her mistreated mother's -- a magnificent Meher Vij -- emancipation as well.
By the time Insiya's conservative, cruel father actually shows up, his misogyny is common knowledge and reiterates in frequent episodes of misdemeanour and his family's endurance of it. Save for his son and Shah Rukh Khan, the beast warms up to no one.
Dreams and domestic abuse collide in director Advait Chandan's emotional, endearing Disneyesque fairy tale, where its not-so-secret superstar Aamir Khan's fairy godmother act and the blessings of social media provide wings to talent and triumph of spirit.
Despite the grimness of Insiya's hurdles, highlighted by the endless patriarchy and domestic violence commonplace to countless Indian households, Secret Superstar has an unmistakable 'soda bubble' quality to it. The kind Aamir uses as analogy to make his point about irrepressible talent.
There's hilarious abandon in his portrayal of the promiscuous, outlandish Bollywood music director seasoned in Anu Malik's mad enthusiasm and Anil Kapoor's bullish conceit that never feels like caricature, even in the face of a flamboyance that's as blatant as his nipples popping out of an ultra-tight lycra tee.
There are times when Chandan's piece-of-cake ardour to the proceedings tends to make the complexity of the matter seem less severe than it is. And the easy-peasy resolves, last minute non-compliance and saccharine tributes doled out in the third act reek of creative lethargy.
Secret Superstar's cheerful, feel-good imagery of a rotten reality, captured gorgeously in cinematographer Anil Mehta's lens and aided by Amit Trivedi's soaring tunes, reflects a young adult's hopeful perspective yet to be crushed by the weight of cynicism.
It pulsates in the anticipation of response to her homemade music video, glows in the avowal of first love (a very adorable Tirth Sharma), basks in the gentle affection of her doting mom and awestruck kid brother, buckles up to remind a has-been his forgotten virtues and help her finally find her own place in the skies.

Insia is very passionate about singing, but her father is against her dream of becoming a singer.
Farookh goes out of town for work, and returns only once a week. Insia wants to participate in a music contest, which has a laptop and one free year of internet as a prize. Her mother tells her to get the permission of her father, but Insia never gets the chance as her father is busy scolding her and her mother. To satisfy her, Najma gifts Insia a laptop. Delighted with her present, Insia spends all her time on the laptop. She soon discovers that people have been using YouTube as a platform to record and post their songs. Insia records a song while disguising herself in a niqab, so Farookh can't find out her identity, and uploads the video on YouTube under the name of 'Secret Superstar'. She becomes an overnight sensation and grabs the attention of Shakti Kumar (Aamir Khan), who is a talented but rude music director and was a once successful singer. Shakti Kumar requests Insia to come to Mumbai for recording a song, but Insia refuses as she has heard a lot negative reviews of Shakti.
One day, Insia sees her tuition teacher's husband read an article about the Secret Superstar in the newspaper. Scared that her father will read the article too, she leaves the test to run home and hide the newspaper. Chintan, who has a crush on Insia, follows her, and tells her that he knows she is the 'Secret Superstar', recognizing her voice. Later he also proposes her in reply Insia with a blushing smile on her face ask him to leave. As she had left her test, Insia got very poor marks. Enraged, Farookh breaks her guitar.
