I've read through a few threads on this issue, mostly from some time ago, but none seem to offer a solution, or explanation as to why Apple have changed how books works so that any epub documents no longer work. I'm running Ventura but am aware that others have had issues with earlier os versions also.
I have a library of several hundred epub books, direct from the publishers (not via apple store) & none work since updating to Ventura. I've tried deleting them & re-adding & even getting new epub files of some from the publishers. I've tried re-setting books also.
I have seen some folks suggesting converting epub files to PDF but why do we, as customers, accept that? epub is a valid format & why should we allow Apple to do anything that means purchases aren't usable?
sorry, I cannot replicate your issue. I have tested this with several of my epub books within Apple Books. I have no issue opening any of the ones I tried, and am sure I would have no issues with the other couple hundred epub books.
i'm thinking you should download and run the free version of EtreCheck so we can see if you have some software installed that is causing your issue. make sure you give "full disk access" to etrecheck. Learn how to use it by reading Using EtreCheck. if you need help interpreting the report, you can see how to post the report here by reading How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report. and it automatically obscures sensitive things (like serial numbers) so you don't have to worry about sharing the report here.
and I would also try and start your Mac into safe mode. then you can test while still in safe mode. sometimes a safe boot followed by a normal boot will clear up small anomalies. please see How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support.
I've now tried most of the epubs I have. A few open but most don't & given that they open on older macs with older os versions & they don't open on the M1 mac, or another M1 mac that I've also tried them on, clearly Apple have changed something. Oddly a few older epub downloads do now bring up an error message, but most don't.
Thanks for the reply, but why do we put up with having to do that? For a start most of the other epub readers have issues with formatting, but the main point is we've all paid for an expensive device & software & we shouldn't need to download another app when Books is supposed to read epubs.
Firstly, none of the epubs are from the Books store. They are direct from publishers & as some others have guessed it might be that Apple are doing this to force people to only get books from their store.
Although these are using a standard EPUB3 container format, the actual HTML and CSS3 internal styling that allows the EPUB to be readable have Apple-specific coding in them that dictate how to appear when opened in Apple's Books application.
And Books generated for Amazon's Kindle by Kindle specific generators use Amazon's own DRM protection, much less HTML and CSS3 features to make their EPUB3 books only usable on Kindle readers, not Apple's Books application. The older Amazon Kindle books were based on a different spec: MOBI instead of EPUB[2,3].
Thanks for the reply, however, again, none of the epubs files I have were purchased from the Apple book store or Amazon. They are all direct from the publishers. They all opened ok on my older mac & on older os versions. What I'm getting at here is that Apple are restricting the ability for epubs not purchased via their stores, or Amazon, from being readable in Books.
The epubs I have, as stated in the original message, are all official epubs & I've tried deleting them, re-downloading etc & they don't work. The files are on the mac in a folder & then imported into Books. In terms of describing the issue, as stated, nothing happens. The files don't open, there are no error messages. In previous OS versions they all opened without any issue, but Books not opening epub files is a known issue in recent OS versions.
So, I have hundreds of epubs, mostly from independent publishers or academic publications. The only ones that work are purchased epubs from mainstream publishers. Free downloads from sites such as Project Gutenberg (I don't have any of those but I've seen that site & Archive.org mentioned on other threads on the issue) don't work & nor do epubs from some independent publishers & academic publishers.
I have tried several epub files from project Gutenberg and also from archive.org, and they ALL opened perfectly. I tried them both on an Intel and an M1 Max Mac, all macs running Ventura. I have yet to find any epub that fails to open.
