- For 2 medium-sized russet potatoes, start with 10-11 minutes of microwave time on 100% power. If the potatoes don't seem tender (give them a squeeze with an oven mitt; they should give readily), add another 1 to 2 minutes at a time.
- If your potatoes are especially large or fat - like the kind you'd get in a restaurant - you'll likely need an extra couple minutes of microwave time. Just put them back in the microwave and add more time until they get cooked through.
- It's not necessary to turn your potatoes over during the cook time; I usually don't because I'm busy doing something else for dinner. However, you certainly can and it can be helpful for larger or fatter potatoes to get them to cook evenly and a bit more quickly.
If your potatoes are different sizes, they may finish cooking at slightly different times. Simply remove the ones that are tender and finished from the microwave and then continue cooking only the larger potatoes that need additional time.
Yikes! I wouldn't put anything in the microwave for 35 minutes! I've made this hundreds of times and for 2 small to medium potatoes, 10-11 minutes is all I need. Even with 4 medium to large potatoes, they're usually all done in 15 minutes. Sorry yours didn't work out - not sure what happened there.
I've done potatoes in the microwave, the oven, and the crockpot. I've even cut them in half lengthway and baked them in a toaster oven. I've baked red potatoes and white potatoes. I've baked them wrapped in foil and not wrapped. Baking in the oven, wrapped or unwrapped, is the only way to get the fluffy texture, we all love.
Sounds like you are a potato lover like me! I do adore a baked potato in the oven, but I also really love the microwave version and mine always turn out so tender and fluffy - plus it saves me so much time!
It sounds to me like your microwave is either too low, or you aren't cooking it long enough. Either way, I'd advise cooking a couple of minutes, then allowing the part of the potato that was actually heated (about a centimeter to an inch in) to heat up the middle for about a minute. Simply repeat till your potato is done. I hope this solves your problem.
From a very old lady who was microwaving potatoes when microwaves were still 3 feet wide:
Scrub it very thoroughly, let it get wet; take a big gob of butter and rub it in thoroughly; do NOT EVER poke it!! (drys it out); wrap it in about 18" WAX paper, yes a long piece so you can roll it; twist the ends hard, then microwave according to size and number of potatoes. Moist moist moist!!
I microwave potatoes bake them in the oven, in foil on the grill, but the microwave always works best.
If I have several to cook like last weekend I wrap them in saran wrap after washing and poking holes and rubbing a little olive oil on each one. Microwane on high for 10 min and let sit then put the stakes on with indirect heat after turning the stakes at 10 min I start the potatoes again for another 10 min. And let sit until I sear the steaks on hi heat.
I let them rest on a tented tray in their juices for 5 min while everyone prepares their own potatoes to tast some even use the ashu from the steak in place of butter.
Cooking times always very because of size potato wattage of microwave and sometimes barometric pressure meaning your altitude. Bon apptit!
Thanks for this. I needed mashed potatoes for a shepherd's pie recipe, but had less than 1/2 hour to prepare them from raw. This post made me confident I could micro them and mash them in time to get the whole entree in the oven to bake. It worked great and my family loved their dinner. Saved the day. Thanks! ?
Hi! I don't recommend peeling the potatoes before putting them in the microwave. I scrub mine really well and if there's a particular spot or small growth, I cut that out. Otherwise, I keep the peel on when cooking these. I hope that helps!
Not all potato skins. Only if it has green skin, or 'eyes' starting to grow (the little sprouts). Otherwise, if you scrub the potato skin and remove the 'eyes', the skin is actually the most nutritious part of the potato!

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble, Timothy. I have a collection of 15-minute chicken recipes that might be helpful for you: -recipes-under-15-minutes/ And you could also do small things like prepping extra baked chicken or rice, chopping extra vegetables, etc. to meal prep a little. And also using timers and reminders when you have something cooking. Hope that helps and take care.
For a long time the convection/ microwave oven had been mocking me from its perch above the refrigerator. Yes, we had used the microwave settings to reheat coffee and make popcorn, but that was pretty much it. I read the manual again and again, and I searched YouTube for a video on how to make sense of the thing. Then, I had an epiphany. JUST MAKE SOMETHING! It might be a failure, but it might not. Either way, it was time to stop being afraid of the oven.
From this point on, keep an eye on it and see if the sauce starts to bubble. When you see it bubble, open the door and pierce it again to see if your knife or toothpick go in without resistance. If it does, then hit stop to turn off the oven and remove the lasagna AND the rack.
Turn on the grill function of the oven. Return the baking dish to the oven, close to the grill element at the top of the oven so that the lasagna sits directly underneath the it and set the time for 10 minutes. It may not take that long to brown, so keep a close watch on it and remove it as soon as the cheese just starts to brown.
Congrats on the cooking. Here is my fav Mexican lasagna meant for an 88 pan. -Easy-Mexican-Lasagna-8105
This one is easy to modify too.
Love seeing updates and photos from you all. Lisa G in TN
I understand that a lot of you do not have ovens at home and this is why everytime I share a recipe, you all ask me whether you can make that in a microwave and how to do the same. Baking a cake in a microwave is super easy, and can be used for any cake recipe! Yes, you read that right. You can make any cake you like in a microwave.
Make sure to not use the steel rack here that usually comes with microwaves, because it is unsafe to use in the normal heating mode. Just keep the microwave safe glass dish on the revolving plate and bake the cake.
Making a cake in the normal heating only takes 5- 7 minutes. So take care of the timings and the texture will be slightly different. Your cake might also be dry. To fix that, you can soak it in a sugar syrup and turn it into a moist cake.
Hello shivesh , can u plz tell me which bakeware( metal) is the best and safe to bake or cook in a convection microwave,, i used a silicone plate at 260c,, it broke down in oven while cooking ,, suggest me the best metal for all types of cooking??
Hello Shivesh, firstly I watch your videos on youtube and I have to say, the amount of efforts u put in are commendable. Im new to baking and whenever I bake a cake in the microwave especially using a metal tin, the cake remains uncooked in the bottom. Why does this happen? Could you please help?

I'm not gonna lie, my roommates just walked past to find me licking the plate after I made the Blueberry filled apple. I love this-it's so easy, and I have a feeling I'll be eating these a lot this winter. Thank you!
This recipe is so wonderfully delicious. I managed to combine the two recipes into my own little variation using a Gala apple, frozen blueberries, dried cranberries instead of raisins, and ate it along with half a cup or so of almonds. All the ingredients were organic and this was by far the most delicious treat I have made in awhile. Thanks so much for waking me up to the possibilities of baked apples ?
oh my! I made the apple with the blueberries, cinnamon, and splenda. It was so yummy! I just had gallbladder surgery too so it was a nice sweet treat. I want to try the raisin one tomorrow. Thanks for the recipes.
I soaked 15g of raisens in a mug with quite a bit of boiled water, cored the apple all the way through and placed in a bowl I added a good pinch of cinnamon then the raisens and pour a bit of the raisen water over the apple. Cooked in the microwave for about five mins. I chopped it all up. Added 25g of plan oats and soaked with the rest of the water, let it cooled down for a few mins and enjoyed. Yum.
I was looking for a quick way to bake apples and came across your recipe. The raisin idea is fantastic. I halve my apples and hit them with butter flavored cooking spray. I soak the raisins in and cover the halves with a zero calorie caramel pecan syrup cut with pomegranate vinegar and a splash of water. Sprinkle on the cinnamon and top the cooked result with whipped topping and a little nutmeg.
