Lee! it's sounding wonderful (as per usual). I've been inserting an
extra layer of "ahhhh" after the symbol/high hat(?) when I'm
listening. What do think of adding another (subtle) layer of depth
somewhere in there? Maybe when the sequence slows down, for bonus
attention drawing purposes???

I love the sepia tone instead of sticking with B&W.

I too wonder about some sort of auditory change at the slow down and
then the inspection of the first smiles. Something that says "wait,
something has changed here" and then a return to the norm to signal
that even with the change, things continue to run smoothly.

At the beginning is there a reason it's quiet for so long at the
start? The first time I watched it I wondered if my sound was off at
first, and then suddenly there was melody. Even after watching a
second time I feel like something is missing to introduce the start of
the film.

The music is pretty bare-bones at this point - Lee has been composing
on the computer to start, then I fit the video to the snippets he sent
me, now he will go back and make more music - then I think he will
record the music he composed on the computer with real instruments.
The music will extend for a few seconds in front of the animation to
make some space for title and credits...

Newest version of smiles linked on this page.

I added a whistle to the start as the music fades in pretty slowly -
and it seems like something needs to happen when those credits go up
to follow on the typing sound.

Lee, is this synced the way you had imagined? First piano tone is
first stamp?

I really like the melancholic tone and the phillip glass-like part
when the slowdown happens - I don't really even notice that it is
slowing now. I'm amazed at how music can change perception this
way.

For the end - do you think a return to the theme? This would seem to
suggest that things are continuing, but with the new faces... or it
could go a bit brighter, either in instrumentation or notes, but I
worry that it gets too cheesy if it gets all happy when the smiles
come...

Thoughts from anyone else?

Watching it again, I am thinking slow the part where she searches for
a smile down even further? Right now it feels like it is slowed to
regular life speed, maybe it should be slowed to slow motion speed?
It would be a stronger contrast with the rest of the sped up action...

Music and edits are looking gorgeous. Lee, I love that steam whistle
intro to the music. Carlos, its looking great, I agree with the idea
to slow down the smile search part, especially when she reaches into
the second cup. Maybe... slow still to reach for the original
(nonsmiling) mouth, keep the finger drumming a little quicker, and
then super slow reach for the eyebrow smile. I agree, increase the
drama!

I think this is my favorite one! I love the sepia effect, the music
and just the simplicity of it. Are you planning to pick up the music
again after the discovery of the smile? Too me, it seems like there
should be some sort of change to the music, even a subtle one, to
indicate that life is different (better) now... again, nice work!!

I think this is just genius - first time I'd seen it. It's like Charlie Chaplin, and the music is perfect - don't think it's cheesy at all at the end.

A new version of HO Smiles...

Changes - slightly longer middle section where the mouth person
searches for a smile and the stamper examines the smile... end is
extended a bit too, fades into the logo.

This might be done? Anyone spot any changes needed?

I think this one looks great, especially love the coloring of the images. One question: the emphatic "thump-thump" section of the music seems to be louder pre-smile than it is post-smile, which seemed odd to me. I really like how the music carries the momentum of this piece ... having the thump-thump (do you know what I mean when I say thump-thump? Ha) equally prevalent at the end would bring things full circle, I think ... as in "smiles are the way things are done now. Thump-thump bitches."

Next time I won't make my suggestions at midnight. :)

Hope everyone is well.

M

Yep, I really really love this one, but I agree with Marie that (even though it's not midnight here) I like the idea of thump-thump bitches. With a little bit of smiley joy as well.

Love it!

I really like this music Lee. If it was a full song I'd be blasting it
through out house!

you've got very good ears Marie, i didn't realize that the later
music was quieter (i was just trying to get the timing correct).
thanks for that, i have corrected this.
