I am trying to show my student why the sides of 24, 50 and 17 won't form a triangle.  I made three segments and have them measuring these lengths, but if I move them, the lengths change.  Is there a simple way to lock the lengths and be able to move them around so that they can play with them and convince themselves that they can't make a triangle?

thanks

Create two of the sides as radii of circles to fix the lengths and then hide the circles.

Or just measure the length of the segment and then right click on it, go to attributes, and lock it...

There is a good Math Nspired activity that highlights this concept very well:

I know Jennifer Wilson uses it alot with much success.
