Hello everyone. Hope everyone has had a great week.

I have the opportunity to purchase an 84 Navigator system and/or an
Nspire Navigator system for my classroom. I have the chance to get
both if I so desire...which I'm very excited about.

I have a classroom set of 30 84's and 20 numeric (blue) Nspires. I'm
going to order 10 more numeric Nspires to complete my set of 30 for
those also.

I'm very new to the Nspire...and I haven't used the Navigator systems
for both systems, but I"m very excited about the opportunity to get
these systems.

Based on the experience you all have had this far with these
systems....would you recommend that I go ahead and get both the 84
Navigator and the Nspire Navigator? Any thoughts, suggestions, things
for me to think about, etc?

I use a Macbook laptop for my classroom computer...so I"m going to
have to use my Parallels version 4 with these programs, unless my
administrators will hook me up with a PC windows based laptop...but
they would prefer that I use my existing Macbook if at all possible.

Any ideas, suggestions, things to think about for me, etc, etc. would
be most appreciated. I"m the only one in my building with the Nspires
(there are 4 of us math instructors)....but myself and another teacher
make use of the 84's extensively. I'm thinking that if I ordered both
the 84 Nav. as well as the Nspire Nav...then the other teacher and
myself could share the 84 system.

Please share your thoughts and experiences with me.

Thanks everyone! This tinspire user group site is awesome!

Hi Bob,
There is a user group for the Nspire Navigator on google groups as
well. I didn't see you on it so I thought I would mention it.
Here is my experience with the 84Navigator-I have been part of the TI
Connectivity in Math and Science research study for the last four
years (it ended in June) so we all got a lot of training on it and
people to ask if there were problems. I wouldn't choose to teach
without one of these systems now, they are so useful. The upgrade to
using it with Vista?W7 is now that I have to actually send back the AP
and they will upgrade it and send it back (4-6 week turnaround). Not
sure I want to be without it for that long, (or pay $350) so I was
interested to read that it may work on Vista/W7 if you do a virtual pc
running xp.
I have ordered the new Nspire Navigator, but there is no firm ship
date yet for us regular people. My only experience with it is at the
Tcubed international conference in Seattle last March and it was
amazing. Not to have that "connection failed check the cable"
messages on the kids calculators all the time would be great. Also
there is a seamless screenshot from there calculators rather than the
wait and the interruption of the kids work. Someone who actually has
it in their classroom would be able to tell you a lot more (see first
sentence of this email).
About the MAC:
I downloaded the trial version of Parallels 5 and put W7 on there and
I can't get ANY program associated with the Navigator to even open.
So next I will try to load xp somehow and try that instead knowing now
about the upgrade to the AP needed to work with Vista/W7.

Ellen,

Thank you so much for the information. Been trying to find the TI
Navigator group but I'm not doing something right. How do I get
there?

Thanks!

Hi Bob
The quickest way is to search groups using TI Navigator as the search word.  The group email is ti-nspire...@googlegroups.com.

Here is a starter list of why I would choose the TI-Nspire Navigator over the 84 Navigator
1. Seriously, it is wireless.
2. It is the TI-Nspire with its faster speed, better resolution, graph AND geometry native to the device.
3. auto refresh with screen capture
4. Live Presenter - students' or teacher's handheld becomes the driver - the model for what to press. It even shows the key presses.
5.The Nspire Navigator is all there in one package. Portfolio, screen capture, class analysis. All the pieces are there.

If you are a devout 84 Navigator user of the Activity Center, at least right now you will miss that component on the Nspire Navigator. If you don't know what that is, you won't miss it, and you will have so many ways to enjoy the Nspire Navigator.
For example, on the Nspire Nav google site you'll see the Swingometer that is fun to use with auto refresh screen capture. I showed a group of science teachers this last week, and it was a great tool to promote class discussion.

Bob,

I really agree with Sean. The TI-Navigator for TI-NSpire is really
great and is much easier to handle in the classroom.
For your information: This information isn't really independant,
because along my job as a teacher, I am also ETC for TI :-(
But I have experience with both TI-Navigator systems.
The TI-Navigator systems also contain certain voting-system
functionality.

The Navigator group can be found at: http://groups.google.com/group/ti-nspire-navigator

Maybe, you can visit a test school using the TI-Nspire Navigator
system?

Kind regards,

Gert

Gert:

The group your referenced is for current users only, i.e. pilot sites
and people under an NDA.

My search didn't turn up any groups for the 83/84 Navigator.

Which version of W7 did you try it with? The XP Virtualization only
comes with Windows 7 Professional or higher. And also, your computer
has to have a certain type of processor (a newish one) and I'm not sure
if Mac Processors support that one command/feature that's needed for
virtualization (it's listed under the recommended specs on the box).

Hi all,
From my earlier post, people might think that I don't like my ETC job.
Note: I really, really like this job :-).
Kind regards,
Gert
