Okay, I have a student's handheld (touchpad) that won't turn on. I've tried the suggested procedure with brand new batteries:
From the TI Knowledge base ...
How can the TI-Nspire handheld be reset and the operating system reloaded?

During operation of the TI-Nspire handheld it may be necessary to reset the device. Circumstances which may require a reset include; keys not responding, device will not turn on or a garbled display.

To reset the device:

• Remove the keypad (for TI-Nspire with Clickpad, TI-Nspire with Touchpad, and TI-Nspire CAS with Touchpad) or the battery door (for TI-Nspire CAS with Clickpad) and remove at least one battery from each column of batteries. After 2-5 seconds, reinsert the batteries but do not turn the calculator on.
For the TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire CAS Handhelds with Clickpad:
• Hold down [Home] [Enter] [P], and while holding these keys, press [On].
For the TI-Nspire, and TI-Nspire CAS Handhelds with Touchpad and the TI-Nspire CX and TI-Nspire CAS CX:
• Hold down [Doc] [Enter] [EE], and while holding these keys, press [On].
Please Note: For TI-Nspire Family Handhelds that contain rechargeable batteries you can alternatively hold the above keys while pressing the [Reset] button on the back of the calculator rather then removing the battery for 2-5 seconds.
• The device will boot up as in the previous reset, but will display a menu with the following options. Please try options 2, 3, and 4 in that order.
• 1: Cancel - The most non-intrusive reset option; no changes are made, the unit restarts.
• 2: Delete Operating System – The operating system will be deleted without deleting any documents on the system.
• 3: Delete Document Folder Contents – This will delete the user’s documents, but will not delete the OS. Selecting this option is the same as using the RESET hole on the back of the unit.
• 4: Complete Format – This will delete the OS and all documents for a total wipe of the handheld.

Please note that the second and fourth option will require that the OS will need to be reinstalled.

This procedure did not work. I also tried the reset button. That didn't work, either. Any other ideas before I suggest the student call TI Cares?

Strange that there would be so many nspire issues. I have a TI-84that
I have used for over ten years and a Voyage 200 that I have used for
about seven years on a daily basis and have never had a problem with
either calculator. I wonder if we are now entering a shorter life/
throw away era for calculators. Perhaps the newer calculator designs
won't take the constant use the way the older models do. They are
quite different physical designs.

I have had no problen at all with TI replacing the calculators that I have had issues with.  I believe they have replaced 5 of mine and replaced my access point to my navigator unit twice.

I have also contacted them twice on behalf of my students for non functioning calcs and they have replaced them as well.

I don't think 1 calculator makes up a valid sample to draw conclusions on this respect.

I will chip in  my personal experience dealing with Nspires that have died.  I love the Nspire and still plan on using it but am very frustrated.

I am looking at 13 Nspire and 2 Nspire CAS on my desk, that TI will not take back and replace.  (this is out of about 125 Nspires purchased and about 30 CAS) They are more than 1 year old and are off warrenty.  Schoolmart has been great about replacing calculators as long as they are within 1 year of purchase.

TI will replace them with what they call reconditioned ones for $75 each and with a 6 month warrenty only.  Being a public school this is a problem to ask my principal for money to replace my calculators that are in her eyes "new'.

I would be interested to hear from others.   I am not usually in agreement with Joe's thoughts on other issues, but this I think is a bigger issue than TI may be willing to admitt.

I'd recommend you get the battery charged up. So while it is plugged in you can press and hold HOME ENTER EE and then press the reset on the back.  Then you can reinstall the OS using the software. Do you need help with the procedure for installing an OS too?
