This year I will be taking AP Statistics at school, and before I
start, I had a few questions that will hopefully help me through the
course.
First, after completing my summer packet, I found that using the TI-
Nspire CAS (the one with the green letter keys) is very annoying for
entering in lots of data since all of the number keys are sandwiched
in between the letter keys. I do have a TI-Nspire CX CAS on order,
but I was wondering if the new layout helps with entering in large
lists of data for statistical analysis.
Second, my teacher only uses the TI-84 and all of her directions are
written for that calculator. So far, I have been fine with finding
the equivalent functionality on the TI-Nspire, but I was wondering if
anybody had any suggestions that might help in areas that might not be
so obvious. In the past my teachers were fine with me using the TI-
Nspire as long as I could still accomplish all of the calculator
related tasks by myself, but it seems like AP Statistics uses a lot
more functionality of the calculator than previous courses. Thanks!

I suspect you will find the CX much easier for data entry (I certainly do!).  As for the differences I think Stats is one of the areas which is much easier on the Nspire then the TI84 so I wouldn't be too concerned…  But someone who has taught AP-Stat can probably advise better on any areas where it might not be so obvious...

I have and am using the Nspire to teach Stats.
The CX (& touchpad) certainly makes it easier to enter data.
However, when you get the CX, you will get a pc version, which is even easier.
Then it is a snap to transfer to the hh. BTW if the datasets are available try copy and paste
with the pc. It sure beats keying all those numbers.

Andy is right about the Stats info on the Nspire.
Be sure to look at the variable list after doing a regression.
I just saw on the AP STATS user group where there is an add on for the 84 to try to bring it up to the Nspire.

Ross.

Let me second what Andy and Ray said.  I just translated about 100 data sets from the TI-84 to the Nspire this summer.  Using the Computer Software is much easier than the calculator.  But what book are you using?  Some of the standard AP Statistics books already have the data in Nspire form.   I have translated the data for Workshop Statistics, Rossman, Ed 3 if that is what you need.

Ray.  Not sure what you mean by the statement below?  Can you clarify?

Thanks for the help! School still hasn't started for me yet, so I'm
not sure what book we will be using. I already purchased the Barron's
review book for AP Statistics, and all of the examples in that book
have screenshots from the TI-Nspire, so it would appear that that book
might help me more than the course's normal textbook. School is
supposed to start on August 29th (next monday), although the
superintendent already sent out an email saying that if Hurricane
Irene does hit Connecticut, we probably won't have school on the first
day of school.

I will also agree with the other posters here.  Last year I made the full-time switch to the Nspire in all of my classes, and if someone had an 84, I would teach them on the side.  For AP Stats, the Nspire is ridiculously easier to work with data.  And since EVERY Nspire touchpad or CX comes with the computer software, it's a steal and much more powerful.

Glad I made the switch...and surprised how many students came along with me last year.  Really expected more resistance than I did due to their affinity for their 83/84s.  They just jumped right in and got to work.

Sorry that I'm sensitive to the mention of SS computer software that should have been included in a retail package.
The reality is far from "every". Commercial discrimination again, and students in Asia fall victim.
Best Wishes,
Jim
