I have a student with a TI-Nspire clickpad that says "operating system not found".   When I plug it into my computer, the Teacher Software doesn't recognize it (it is listed with a caution triangle in the Content tab).  How do I upgrade/install the current OS on this unit?

Thanks!
Kara

Sounds like they may have bought an ex-prototype off of ebay.  Not seen one for a while but they boot with a triangle showing in the corner and can't be upgraded with normal public relelases...

Hello Kara

The error you are getting does happen every once in a while with handhelds, and mainly older, non-CX handhelds.

As has been suggested, sending the OS from another handheld to the one reporting the error is the way to go - it's as if the second handheld can 'push' the OS to the first handheld in a way that the Computer Software can't, as it needs to establish a higher level of 'contact' with the offending handheld.

I am sorry, the previous mail sent off (premature) accidentally Here are the steps:

-          Connect the hh with your software

-          Go to content tab and right click on your hh

-          Click Install OS

-          Select the OS file and send (you may send the latest directly- OS version 3.9)

-          It sends the OS, and handheld reboots with latest

Thanks

Thank you for the help.  I have tried both of the suggestions given, and neither works.  When attempting from the software, it gets about 95% finished, then says the OS is corrupt or invalid (I downloaded 3.9 from www.education.ti.com).  Anything else to try?

I tried yesterday with the same process, installing OS from software (I also had a triangular sign in handheld, and saying OS not found). but it worked. May be you can try with earlier version of OS : 3.6 or even earlier, and then try upgrading.

I've just had a similar problem. It almost completes the install, but then says : "You cannot install a version of the OS that is older than the currently installed version"
When I tried "Check for OS Updates" it said it is currently running version 0.0.
I'm not sure what to do next.

Regards,
Michael C

Try:

  • Download the latest OS to your computer.
  • Connect the affected handheld to the computer.
  • Use the Transfer Tool (on the Tools menu of the software) to download the OS file to the handheld.

If that fails then use the ‘four-finger salute’ to get to the ‘Maintenance Menu’ on the handheld, wipe it clean (format), then install the OS from another handheld or the computer.

Four-finger salute (TI-Nspire CX):

Hold DOC, EE and ENTER and then press the reset on the back of the calculator.

This probably takes two people to accomplish (intentionally difficult!)

I recently called 1-800-TI-CARES about a handheld with a similar problem.  I had previously tried all of the Reset options, including the Double-Secret Reset that John mentions.

The TI tech had me remove the battery for several minutes to force the calculator to revert to its factory state.  After re-installing the battery, I was able to install a new operating system, and it works fine.

Good luck,
Michael

[the battery removal has worked well for me.  This has been particularly true when the calc does not seem to hold a charge or never registers over 25/75%]  Be careful when removing the battery.  Ease it out with your finger nails, leveraging side to side, gently.  Note that the red wire is on the right r=r.

Hi all

Take a look at the TI Knowledge Base case posted here:

Hope this helps!

With best wishes,
