John,
Thanks for sharing this. Interesting perspective, but also wholly wrong.
FWIW – I wholly disagree with the premise of the article
The authors are in a bubble of hardware hackers – for whom going to the open source FOSDEM conference is a regular thing.
In the real world, very few people have the tools to write code, let alone control physical objects like LEDs.
For the non-FOSDEM goer (which is MOST of us), turning on an LED or controlling the color of an RGB LED is still a big “a-ha!” moment!
It is exciting to see a line of code – that the coder has written - control the light or play a tone.
The sense of agency is empowering. We have all seen this and experienced this ourselves.
Combine a few of these lines and you have yourself a sound-and-light show :)
“Physical computing” is still very much a thing. And we should still use it to excite and engage students who are right to ask “why learn to code?”
To paraphrase a meme:
Tired: print(“Hello World”)
Wired: color.rgb(R, G, B)
I wish we never get jaded enough to think that interacting with the real world through teachable lines of code is humdrum.
Thanks,
- Harshal
