Segmented bar chart

I was working with some AP Stats teachers who were looking to better show conditional probability. The wanted to easily make the TI-Nspire display a segmented bar chart (Excel demo), and with Fathom it is referred to as ribbon chart. I made up a kind of work around that really doesn't work. So I thought that perhaps this is a job for a talented stat-minded Lua programmer. Anyone interested? Or are there other ideas from our stat teachers? Would this be a much appreciated feature?

Over the years there have been some great improvements with Data & Statistics, from the recently added ability to turn "Diagnostics on" under D&S settings (press Menu), to the 5 years ago added capability of forcing categorical and Navigator improvements that made aggregating data easier. If you want to see an example of Data & Statistics from its early years, check out a Thanksgiving post I blogged 7 years ago.

Thanks,
Sean Bird

Here is a non Lua version that is limited to 5 groups (bars) and 5 categories (segments), I think that should be enough for most purposes.  It is 2.0 because I found a neat way to condense the code (from my first version) with indirection (I left page 1.6 visible with the program).

You enter your categorical counts in the group lists on page 1.2.  If you show the page sorter while entering the counts, page 1.3 will looked messed up until all the groups have an equal number of categories.

Here is what's on the pages:
1.3: Segmented Bar Graph
1.4: Categorical Percentages
1.5: Cumulative Percentages
1.6: The program - You may want to delete this page before distributing.

Dennis,
Well done! I think I'll know some excited Stats teachers.
That is some outstanding programming. Take a look at the attached to see if you like the layout of the graph on 1.3 a bit better. I pinned some text and tidied some things up. I'm not sure if I like the 0.2 scale or if it should stay 0.1.
Version 2.02 attached has the horizontal lines to aid in seeing the percentage. Is this helpful or distracting?

Thanks for sharing your work.

Dennis and Sean (and Al):

First, thanks for a much-needed feature. But I can't believe that you
limited the number of categories to five when there are SIX colors for
M&Ms :-)

What's a stats teacher to DO?

cheers,
landy

Wow, I never even thought of that.  Clearly an oversight!

Here is an updated version with 6 categories allowed.  It also has a cleaned up graph page as well, thanks to Sean Bird.

I even changed the segment colors to match the M&M Colors, from bottom to top - Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Green, Brown

What causes the program to run? I don’t see it on a Notes page.

There's a "hidden" notes page on the first page at the bottom.

The most updated version of Segmented Bar Graph TI-Nspire file is posted on our TI-Nspire Group Website.
It is in the Statistics section toward the bottom of the page

You can get it directly from Segmented Bar Graphs.tns Download
Note: With this version the program page 1.6 is hidden/removed.

Pass this on to all your Statistics friends.

I think it is ready for prime time. Collaboration certainly can make life better. I'm grateful for Jenny from Chicago who first asked me about segmented bar graphs. And thanks for making the request for categorical M&M data, Landy, and for other suggestions from Al that prompted Dennis to make this the best version yet. Perhaps we should give Dennis some M&Ms when we see him at the Teachers Teaching with Technology International Conference. We are especially thankful for his keen programming skills.

What does anyone think of the color of the text or fill on the List & Spreadsheet page 1.2? Helpful?

text and tidied some things up. I'm not sure if I like the 0.2 scale or
if it should stay 0.1.

To give 1.3 its current style, first I changed the menu>View to Geometry. Then removed the scale. Next I  menu > View > Show Analytic Window and grabbed the endpoints to make it fit the screen like I wanted or thought would look okay.
Then I fixed the window to be from 0 to 1 for y and 0 to 20 for x.

The small number font can be found in the symbols (ctrl catalog, or it is in the catalog) toward the very bottom.

I now also made the Notes page with the program on it be on a split screen on the first page.
