when my handheld's battery is low, i use my laptop to charge it, but
if i use a laptop that does not have the Nspire software, i cant
charge the h-held at all. which means i can only charge the H-held
using a laptop which has the Nspire software. is it true? if this is
the case, how can student charge their h-held if they dont have the
software intheir laptop? pls advise. tahnks.

Ever since I received it, I've been charging my CX CAS (running OS
3.0.1.1753) exclusively through my Linux computers, and it works even
if TILP is not running.
Therefore, all I can say is that, while the problem may exist on
Windows or MacOS X, it does not exist on Linux :)

I believe that when one of my students bought his CX, it came with a wall cord as well as a usb cord (actually the usb cord plugs into the wall adapter).  If your student get the wall usb adapter (which again, I think they should have) they can go to almost any place you get similar cell phone stuff and get one there.

BTW, great question for the forum, exactly the reason the forum was created!  :)

I've charged it on a computer that doesn't have the Nspire software.

In my experience, it's not a case of whether the computer has the
software on it, or not.
Rather (for Windows at least) has the driver been found for the
handheld when it's plugged into the computer for the first time.
I don't know if it's a generic driver, or whether it's a TI thing
that's obviously installed when the software is.

My students have charged their Nspire CX's from a USB port in their
car's cigarette light socket, so maybe it works with all drivers
(car ... driver ... geddit?!?)

nice pun.
Another related question is, does the Nspire need to be ON for it to charge?
discussion ...

I've taken the wall plug off of my iPhone adaptor and plugged in the USB cord from the calculator. Works just fine.

given: almost all Nspire will turn themselves off after several
minutes
given: charging an Nspire CX takes hours

question: does the Nspire need to be on for it to charge?

I think not.

almost 100% sure it does not need to be powered on.
(never used an Nspire with rechargeable batteries, but it would be the
first device in the world that doesn't charge while turned off)

Initial instructions are to charge for four hours before turning on
for first time.
