Purpose of archived topics

My question is - if I archive a topic, does it mean that this topic will be removed from server´s memory or the purpose is just to hide a topic in clients so that it does not appear amont active topics?

More like the latter.

Archiving a topic doesn't change the topic per se, it modifies the user's subscription to the topic - we do not display the archived subscription in the client.

However, you can view it in the Archived Chats.
