In society, tobacco products, such as e-cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco products, such as snus and nicotine pouches, are becoming more attractive. There is still a lack of information regarding the effects of these products on the oral mucosa and oral saliva biomarkers. The aim of this study is to evaluate oral mucosa and the presence of inflammatory biomarkers IL-6, IL-1, IL-8, TNF alpha and LRG-1 in saliva. Respondents were divided in four groups based on their tobacco product usage. Oral examination was carried out, saliva samples were taken, and the detection of IL-6, IL-8, IL-1, TNF alpha and LRG-1 levels in saliva was carried out. Out of the tobacco users, 30.8% were snus users, 48.7% were cigarette users and 20.5% were e-cigarette users. The control group was composed of respondents who did not use any tobacco products. E-cigarettes were used more by women, but snus was used more by men. Mucosal changes were seen in the group of snus users, and mucosal changes were only seen in men who had used 5-10 tobacco units per day for 5-10 years. Increased IL-6 levels in saliva were detected in respondents who also experienced mucosal changes. Mucosal changes were white, leathery and localized at the site where snus sachets were placed. Saliva, as an easily available biofluid, could be used as a first tool to detect potentially precancerous signs, but the LRG1 marker cannot be used as a prognostic marker.

Interpretive Summary: Corky ringspot disease (CRS) in potato is caused by tobacco rattle virus (TRV). This virus is transmitted by the stubby root nematode (Paratrichodorus allius) in the Pacific Northwest potato producing regions. Although rotation crops such as alfalfa and Scotch spearmint are good hosts of the nematode, it cannot acquire the virus from these crops. Nematodes infected with TRV shed some of the virus with each molt during their life cycle and eventually the population is cleansed after several generations raised on alfalfa or Scotch spearmint. However, weeds in these rotation crops may serve as hosts for TRV and furthermore, the virus may spread in the seeds of some weed species. Thirty-seven weed species were evaluated for host status of stubby root nematode and TRV. Twenty-four were good hosts of the nematode, but only 11 of those were infected with TRV. Virus-free nematodes acquired the virus from three nightshade species, volunteer potato, and prickly lettuce, and subsequently transmitted the virus to Samsun NN tobacco indicator plants. Thus, some weeds may play a role in the epidemiology of CRS by perpetuating TRV and its vector in a problem field. These weeds need to be targeted for control in crops of alfalfa or spearmint that are grown to suppress CRS disease.

Technical Abstract: The ability of several weed species to serve as hosts for tobacco rattle virus (TRV), the causal agent of corky ringspot disease of potato (CRS), and its nematode vector, Paratrichodorus allius, was investigated in greenhouse studies. Viruliferous P. allius multiplied on 24 out of 37 weed species tested, indicating they were suitable hosts of the vector. However, only 11 of these weeds were infected with TRV, as determined by ELISA. The nonhost status of a given weed species was not changed whether the viruliferous vector population originated from CRS problem field in WA, OR, or ID. Several weeds that served as hosts for the vector and virus included kochia, prickly lettuce, henbit, nightshade species (black, hairy, and cutleaf), common chickweed and annual sowthistle. Virus-free P. allius acquired TRV from the three nightshade species, volunteer potato grown from TRV-infected tubers, and prickly lettuce, and subsequently transmitted the virus to Samsun NN tobacco indicator plants. Thus, some weeds may play a role in the epidemiology of CRS by perpetuating TRV and its vector in a problem field.

House of Prince A/S, is a Danish cigarette manufacturer. As Denmark's only cigarette manufacturer,[2] it was an independent subsidiary of Scandinavian Tobacco Company until its sale to British American Tobacco in 2008.

The history of House of Prince dates to 1990 during reconstruction of Scandinavian Tobacco Company, and now houses all cigarette tobacco manufacturing of that company. The factory was built in 1951 and is located in Sborg, Denmark and produced approximately 60 million cigarettes daily.

In Latvia, the company founded a common Latvian-Danish company called SIA House of Prince Riga in December 1992 and acquired a stake in the state-owned Riga Tobacco Factory, becoming its sole owner in 2001.[5] It was renamed Scandinavian Tobacco SIA in 2003 and SIA British American Tobacco Latvia in 2008.[6][7] The factory, located on Miera iela in Riga, had been founded as a/s A. S. Maikapar in 1877 and built in 1912, but was nationalized by the Soviet occupation in 1940 and ultimately announced its closure in July 2009.[8][9]
