I am considering moving Tinkerer to GitHub at some point in the future. I believe GitHub community is bigger than BitBucket, which might be beneficial for the project, plus all my friends are there :) The reason I like BitBucket is free private repositories which I can keep for my non-public projects, but the public stuff I have might as well move there.

Before doing anything though, I am wondering what folks in this group think about it. Most of contributed to the project in one form or another and I wouldn't want to lose you. Do you have GitHub accounts? Do you have strong feelings for or against moving Tinkerer over there?

Thank you,
Vlad

I tend to use github more than bitbucket (read: I don't think I have any active repos on bitbucket, but plenty on github).

I have no problem with GitHub either (have an account there too, like it more
than mercurial).

A lot of Python stuff is hosted on Bitbucket especially Sphinx where probably
most people are coming from. I'm not sure if this would have the intended
effect since people would have to use mercurial and git to use and hack on
sphinx and tinkerer.

Way more into github.  Nothing against bitbucket though.

Probably the same answer as from the other guys. I personally prefer Github because it had git initially (versus Hg on Bitbucket). Yet AFAIK the functionality of both hosts for open-source project does not differ that much. Bottomline: it is up to you Vlad :) I believe we will all follow you on Github the same way we do on Bitbucket.

Great, thanks guys!

Looks like you prefer GitHub, so I will probably move over there.

Thank you,
Vlad

I'll throw this out there:

- hg is (as other's have mentioned) where a lot of python repos live in - and simpler at some level to use;
- github (more than git itself) is a major social / tech hub, and encourages participation (e.g. thru it's "anyone edit / zen edit" links);

Whatever you choose, remember that mirroring is an option.

just remember to let us know so we can re-add you to our follow lists.

I will also add that in my experience the "functionality" of the two is almost a straight clone in terms of layout and issues etc.  I just feel that github has way more "gene flow" or "cross pollination" if you will... can you guess I am a biologist...  Point is, I feel that github's collaboration culture is stronger.

Anyway, I would say that priority should be on you being able to keep your process of running and maintaining the project as easy as possible for you.  In the end that benefits us the most I think.

Many people probably have accounts on both anyway.

In science, "fact" can only mean "confirmed to such a degree that it would be perverse to withhold provisional assent." I suppose that apples might start to rise tomorrow, but the possibility does not merit equal time in physics classrooms.
