Jeff and Pam McKenzie are trying to sell their house, but have not told their children, Abby and Chris. Jeff lost his job and Pam's salary is not enough to keep their home. To make matters worse, Jeff's obnoxious and successful brother Hunter, his wife, Mei, and their son Ollie have decided to stay with them for Christmas.
During an open house, Max Mercer and his mother Carol stop by to use the restroom. Max has a brief exchange with Jeff, during which the latter reveals a box of old dolls, including a malformed one with an upside down face. Carol explains to Jeff that dolls with unusual deformities are rare and worth a lot of money. As Max and Carol return home, the whole family is preparing to leave for Tokyo, Japan, for the holidays, with Carol leaving earlier than the rest. Max, annoyed with the fuss, settles in the garage-parked car to watch cartoons and accidentally falls asleep. Unfortunately, Max's family do not realize that their son was sleeping in the car parked in the garage and left him at home, thinking he was in another vehicle with one of the rest of the members.
Concerned about losing their home, Jeff goes to get the doll only to find it is missing. Believing that Max stole it, he locates the Mercer household the next day only to find the whole family hastily leaving. During the commotion, he overhears the security code and sees where the house key is hidden. Telling Pam about it, they agree to get the doll back at night.
Meanwhile, Max discovers the whole family has left and initially has fun, though he quickly grows bored and misses them. Meanwhile, Jeff and Pam arrive at the Mercer's and get inside. Overhearing them talk about getting an "ugly little boy", Max assumes they are talking about kidnapping and selling him. He attempts to scare them away by calling the police. Officer Buzz McCallister arrives, but Pam diverts him. Max fears if Officer McCallister realizes he is home alone, his parents may get arrested.
Sneaking around the back of the house, Jeff and Pam end up in the neighbor's backyard instead. Max overhears them once again, with Jeff agreeing to arrive dressed as Santa in an effort to fool him. Max responds by boobie-trapping the house to cause difficulty and prevent them from getting close to himself while Jeff and Pam wait for their family to fall asleep on Christmas Eve. The couple fall into Max's traps, during which they discover that Max did not steal the doll, but instead a can of soda. They clear up the misunderstanding, but learn Max is home alone and agree to let him stay with them until his mother returns.

Parents need to know that, like its predecessors in the franchise, Home Sweet Home Alone has a lot of comic violence. A couple (Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney) are trying to retrieve a valuable doll they believe is inside the home of a young boy named Max (Archie Yates), who thinks the pair want to kidnap him because his vacationing family accidentally left him behind. To fend them off, Max sets up a series of traps that involve heavy flying objects, fires, explosions, and pushpin-bearing darts. The two adults slip repeatedly on ice, sink into a covered pool, fall off a stone wall, walk on Lego bricks, run into things, are nearly impaled by falling objects, drive their car into a pole, and lose a tooth. The beatings are played for laughs, but the motivation for the couple's desperation is financial hardship due to unemployment, and their economic problems are contrasted against other people's wealth in the film. Both they and Max ultimately learn that family is more important than possessions or places and that home is just another word for family. Secondary characters are Black and Asian. Language includes a use of "bulls--t" that's left unfinished, plus "crap," "stupid," "butt," "cretin," "idiot," "flabby," "booby," "heinie," "monster," and some bathroom humor. Parents Pam (Ellie Kemper) and Jeff (Rob Delaney) are unhappily selling their family home since Jeff has been out of work in HOME SWEET HOME ALONE. At an open house, mom Carol (Aisling Bea) and son Max (Archie Yates) stop by, and Max and Jeff have an awkward encounter over Jeff's antique doll collection. When Jeff later realizes that one of the dolls is worth a small fortune, but then can't find it in his collection, he assumes Max stole it. Meanwhile, Max's extended family has left for a vacation in Japan and accidentally forgotten him at home. Jeff and Pam vow to retrieve the stolen doll from Max's house, but the boy believes they are out to get him and goes on the offense. Chaos ensues.
If you like seeing grown adults getting beaten, hit, pierced, set on fire, and tossed repeatedly on their backs, the Home Alone series is for you. By this point, after no fewer than five previous features in the franchise, Home Sweet Home Alone might not have much new to offer. But the characters here have a wholesomeness to them that was missing in some of the earlier films. Less home burglars and more desperate parents about to lose their own home, Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney are quite sweet as reluctant home invaders Pam and Jeff, who play Christmas songs on bells for the elderly in their spare time and apologize to inanimate objects when they run into them.
After an awkwardly paced introduction with some clunky jokes, the film picks up when the comedy becomes physical. Kemper and Delaney are believable victims with limber frames. A scene where they struggle to help each other climb a tall wall, complete with an ill-timed fart and set in slow motion to children's choir singing, is laugh-out-loud funny. Same with the sequence of hijinks Max embarks upon when he finds himself alone at home, including ironing-boarding down the stairs and building an ice cream sundae directly in his mouth. Admittedly, there's (still) something iffy about laughing along with a 10-year-old as he brutally injures adults, and some of the falls and hits feel particularly vicious. But the familiar formula has its appeal, and franchise fans will enjoy the expected echoes of earlier editions.
Which brings us to Home Sweet Home Alone, streaming now on Disney Plus. It's a reboot of the much-loved 1990s slapstick comedies about a wiseass 8-year-old left to fend off bumbling burglars. Replacing original star Macauley Culkin is Archie Yates (the funniest child Nazi in the funny child Nazi movie). He plays mischievous Max Mercer, a resourceful 10-year-old forced to defend his family home from a pair of robbers attempting to snaffle a priceless heirloom.
The COVID pandemic disrupted filming, so it may be a miracle this film exists at all. It's updated for the modern age with the inclusion of a voice-controlled home assistant, although it feels like the writers wrote that on a Post-it note and stuck it on a whiteboard then forgot to come back and write any jokes. Still, Kevin's brother Buzz is in it. He says "Home alone" (y'know, like the title of the movie). What else do you want?
Home Sweet Home Alone finds JoJo Rabbit standout Artie Yates filling Culkin's iconic puffer jacket and beanie as Max Mercer, Gen-Z's Kevin McCallister. The British 10-year-old is tasked with defending his Chicago home from robbers (Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney) after he is left alone for the holidays when his family departs for a vacation in Tokyo. In this version, they're tripped up by the fact that they were split up onto separate flights. Naturally, hijinks and bodily harm ensue.
While Macaulay Culkin did not reprise his iconic role, we do get an update on what Kevin is like as an adult, courtesy of Buzz: He designs home security systems, starting McCallister Home Security. Looks like someone found a healthy way to deal with his childhood trauma.
Buzz also reveals that it's an annual holiday tradition for Kevin to send in a prank call about a kid being left home alone to mess with Buzz, which is 1. Such a little brother move. 2. A pretty awful use of police resources! As Buzz once again sighs, "Trout-sniffer."
Naturally, the movie uses John Williams' original score, which earned him an Oscar nomination. The sentimental tune kicks in for the first time just as Max realizes he's home alone. Meanwhile, the mischievous music comes in as Max is setting up his house for Jeff and Pam's arrival.
Anyone who follows my content knows how much I love the original Home Alone from1990. I saw it when I was just about to turn10 with my grandparents in California and it was the first comedy I really connected with. The whole premise of a kid being alone and not only getting by but defending his home from bad guys was very empowering and hilarious. I still love it to this day.
