As you know, academic success is anchored around literacy. Helping your child develop strong reading skills is critical for them to truly thrive. If your child starts to fall behind in reading, identifying the issue and bringing them up to speed is incredibly important.

Each child is unique, but Penalba says these teacher-approved tips generally help give a child's reading level a boost. For even more information on how your child's reading should progress throughout the years, check out this reading roadmap for kids in preschool through sixth grade.

These early years are formative because until 3rd grade, students typically continue to learn how to read. Students will acquire the ability to identify letters, decode letter sounds, blend sounds in a word, build a growing and then proficient memory of spelling, and establish a large bank of sight words. BOB Books are a great tool for enhancing these key early reading skills.

1. Decode mystery words: Read part of a book out loud to your child, omitting one "mystery word" that is frequently used (like "because" or "always"). Introduce clues about that mystery word in the text, including the number of letters it has, a letter the mystery word contains, or even a specific sound in the word. Ask your child to guess what that word is! Celebrate solving the mystery with a final reading, asking your child to clap every time the word is read. This is a fun way to introduce new high-frequency words to your child.

4. Give context: If your child is embarking on a new text, provide a bit of background knowledge and context about the book's topic if you can. For instance, if they just got a copy of an I Survived book like I Survived the American Revolution, 1776, talk to them a little bit about what America was like at that time in history. This will help ground children in the reading ahead.

6. Ask questions: Ask your child questions at the end of a story or book they read based on the conversations you've had about the text. Your child has hopefully been building up ideas about the topic while reading!

Penalba says that book sets or collections can be especially helpful for this age range. Diving into a series can get kids invested in a story and its characters, and familiarize them with the author's style of writing, helping the sequential books seem less daunting. Look to build collections with a common theme: These Raise a Reader Sets are a great place to start!

The Letter Tiles app for tablets can be used in place of or in addition to the physical Letter Tiles. The Letter Tiles app can be purchased from the app store of your choice and is available for iPad, Android, and Amazon Fire tablets as well as touch-enabled Chromebooks.

Please note that the level numbers on our books do not refer to grade levels. Our lessons are mastery-based, not grade-level-based. This means that students are placed according to their current ability rather than their age or grade level.

For a complete overview of how to prepare to teach All About Reading Level 3, see the detailed "Preparing for Level 3" information on pages 7-30 of your Teacher's Manual or watch the Level 3 Preparing to Teach All About Reading videos.

Our Letter Tiles are designed to be used for both All About Reading and All About Spelling and include all letter tiles needed for every level of both programs. You will only need one kit per household. If you purchased your Letter Tiles before April 2023, see additional information in the "Previous Editions" FAQ section below.

Yes. Each box comes with divider cards, and these are different for reading and spelling. Also, you will want a separate Reading Review Box to store and organize the flashcards that come in your All About Reading Student Packet. If you are teaching multiple students, we recommend purchasing separate review boxes for each child.

The older kit did not include specialty tiles (Syllable Tags, prefixes, and suffixes). Instead, these were included in the Level 2-4 Student Packets as needed. The Level 2-4 Student Packets will continue to include specialty tiles to ensure customers still receive all the tiles needed for the program. However, there have been multiple improvements to our new Letter Tiles kit that might benefit you, such as:

  • Every tile needed for all levels of All About Reading and All About Spelling including prefixes, suffixes, Greek word parts, and Latin word parts
  • Tokens to use with All About Spelling Level 1
  • Updated Syllable Tags that will be used for both programs
  • 2 zip storage bags for easy organization

We've made purchasing even easier! Due to customer feedback, we have phased out our Interactive Kits. Instead, the Letter Tiles now include all tiles and magnets needed for all levels of All About Reading and All About Spelling and are purchased separately as a one-time purchase. The divider cards are also now included with the review boxes.

Readable doesn't just tell you your readability scores and leave you to it. It also highlights the parts of your text in the greatest need of attention. That helps you focus your valuable time on the edits that matter.

We take data security and privacy seriously, and we're always working to ensure your data remains accessible only to you. For those who need more, we offer additional options to control data retention.

If you work in web marketing, you know that success is down to a dazzling array of factors. But Content Is King. And Readable can make sure that, whatever the search algorithms do tomorrow, no hard-won reader is turned away by impenetrable text.

Readable was born out of a need for software to analyse reading materials for students, and it is still used for that today. Whether you're looking to give students feedback on their work, or to see if a particular piece is suitable for a particular audience, Readable can help.

It's critical for any medical company to ensure all of their written materials avoid jargon or complex language, especially when it comes to leaflets and instructions distributed with medical products.

National and local governments product a huge amount of content for a vast audience with a broad spectrum of reading ability, and Readable can help ensure that all of that content is as accessible to that audience as possible.

A readability score can tell you the level of education someone needs to easily read a piece of text. The score identifies a Grade Level relative to the number of years of education a person has. Read more about readability scores.

The bottom line is that if we don't get dramatically more children on track as proficient readers, the United States will lose a growing and essential proportion of its human capital to poverty, and the price will be paid not only by individual children and families, but by the entire country.

There are 7.9 million low-income children, birth through age 8 in the United States. If current trends hold true, 83%, or 6.6 million of these children, are at increased risk of dropping out of high school because they can't read proficiently by the end of third grade.

A readability score is a computer-calculated index which can tell you roughly what level of education someone will need to be able to read a piece of text easily. It is recommended that documents for the general public be written on an 8th grade reading level.

Students at Level 5 demonstrate comprehensive understanding of grade level content standards, are on track for career and college, and are prepared for advanced content at the next grade/course.

Students who are not proficient demonstrate inconsistent understanding of grade level content standards and will need support at the next grade/course.

Not Proficient Students can:

For use with a laser detector. There is a special
rail slide and Laserline detector bracket that
lets the laser detector travel the full working
length of the rod. This allows faster and easier
readings because it takes the awkwardness
out of having to loosen the detector, move
the detector, then tighten the detector for
each reading.

Direct Reading, or True Elevation (also known as Lenker style) is a Grade Rod with a moveable tape face
allowing you to set the actual benchmark elevation, or any elevation, above or below the bench into the
rod. The actual true elevation above sea level is read on these rods, thus eliminating errors caused by adding
or subtracting. Since no math is involved, grade shots are much faster than conventional style rods.
On most jobsites, the bench elevation is typically established by survey, and all elevations on that project are
above that or below primary bench elevation.
