When downloading and installing the minecraft launcher from the offical website, there is no step for me to choose the install path and its always in C:\XboxGames. Anyway for me to change the path into C:\GameLaunchers?

Yes! When I downloaded and ran the legacy .msi launcher install from Mojang, it asked where I wanted to install the launcher. Set that to your target directory and you are good to go! You might experience issues because Windows is very picky about where you store your files. C:/ is your root directory, and Windows likes you to store and install your stuff in your user directory.

If this still causes problems and simply doesn't work or you want an easier-to-use experience, you might consider using a different launcher like MultiMC, CurseForge, or ATLauncher. They make it significantly easier to add mods and manage the location of your installations. I assume you're using Windows, so all these launchers are available for you to use. I have used all these launchers and I personally recommend CurseForge. It is very user-friendly and has access to arguably the largest modpack database in the Minecraft community.

If you use Linux, or if anyone comes across this post with a similar issue, you can go to the same link but install the Other Distributions tarball and run tar -xzf minecraft.tar.gz. This will create a /minecraft directory you can move where you like. All the launchers I mentioned work for Linux except CurseForge. They still haven't added Minecraft support for some reason.

This also worked for me. Just as a heads up, this was caused due to the fact I did not have a locale setup. I followed the steps on the Arch wiki page for Locale and I can now use minecraft-launcher normally, without prepending LC_ALL=C.

I'm trying to setup Minecraft for my daughters on their own OS X accounts of our new computer. At this point I'm using normal un-restricted accounts while I troubleshoot. Whatever account I "install" minecraft on it will work. But if I switch users and launch it then I get the error "Minecraft updater - Unable to start Minecraft, if you are running from a dmg, please drag to Applications and try again."

I am not running the DMG. I've installed it via drag and drop to the apps folder and then deleted the dmg etc. So it works on the users account that I install it but that error pops up on any other accounts that I try to open minecraft with later.

The fix I found was to look at the permissions of the Application. /Applications/Minecraft.app I noticed that they were Owner: R+W,Admin: RO, Everyone: RO. I initially changed this at the app level by doing a "Get Info" and changing them to all being R+W. This did not fix it. I then navigated to the app file and right-clicked and selected "Show Package Contents". Then selected the "Contents" Folder and right-clicked and selecting "Get Info". At this info page I unlocked(bottom right corner) and changed both admin and everyone to R+W. then I selected the gear (bottom middle) and selected "Apply to enclosed Items...". At the prompt click "OK". then the app opens in the other accounts.

The root application should be installed in the Applications folder. If it's parked somewhere in a users folder that's likely the issue for trying to run under multiple accounts. If it is already in the applications folder it's possible the game is linked to the account you used when the purchase was made, but I don't know for sure. I do think you're going to get better traction on the Minecraft forum for this questions. - as far as OS X is concerned it's as you said "This *should* work." - but this assumes it should work the way you want and not the way the developers intended.

Ok, first off I installed it in the admin account originally and on my latest try. As far as "root". It's in the root applications folder but the "application support" folder for minecraft is in my admin user profile and not the root from what I can tell. When I get home maybe I'll try to move that folder and see if it helps. Though I'm not sure if that will confuse the app since it's likely looking in that specific location it was installed.

No, it's not. It was actually purchased on a different computer at my parents. It installed and worked on this computer ok but just for whatever account it's installed to directly. I can overwrite the install from another users profile on the system and then it works from that profile only.

The developers intend for this to work as far as I can tell. It just doesn't. I believe there must be a bug in their software or something. That link even proves this by mentioning how to set things up with multiple users and block each other from using each-others worlds etc.:)

I'm 70% sure it didn't auto generate those files for the new user accounts on our brand new system though. So that could be the problem. Maybe I can duplicate those files from the user account that works and paste them for one of the new users. Worth a shot...

John, as of today, I have the exact same issue as you experienced. Although I did have Minecraft working on multiple user accounts on a MacBook Pro running 10.10.5 *before* updating to the new Mac launcher for Minecraft. After I updated to the new Minecraft launcher this morning, I started having this issue. I agree with your hunch that this is likely a bug in the new Minecraft launcher for Mac. Possible solutions:

I encountered this recently. What I discovered is that the .app is correctly installed in /Applications However the launcher and related data is installed to /Users//Library/Application Support/minecraft Every other user that attempted to launch the .app would fail with the error the OP reported. Simply changing the .app and it's Contents folder to R+W for everyone did not solve my particular issue.

So I'm able to download modpacks from curse forge get the into the minecraft mod folder but once the upload starts on the launcher it get's to the end and just won't progress does any one know what the issue might be I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything but I keep having the same problem.

ATLauncher is a simple and easy to use Minecraft Launcher which contains 155 modpacks for you to choose from, as well as the ability to browse and install packs from other platforms including CurseForge, Modrinth and Technic.

So why not take a look at the different packs that are available or just download ATLauncher and give a try yourself. If you're still unsure about us, then visit our about page to get a list of features.

Currently there are known issues with logging into Microsoft accounts. Check Downdetector for user reports of the issue.

This issue is intermittent over the last week, and affects all launchers and websites that use Minecraft services, including the vanilla launcher and minecraft.net.

This issue is at Microsoft/Mojang's end and is not something that ATLauncher or individuals themselves encountering issues can fix.

Some people have had luck using a VPN set to another country in order to login, but other than that all that you can do if you face login issues is to keep trying, logins start and stop working constantly, so just keep trying.

Again, please note that ATLauncher staff cannot do anything about this, please have some patience and just keep trying the above. Our support cannot do anything to fix this and will just direct you to the above.

Thanks

Unfortunately there is another exploit going around the modded Minecraft community at the moment.

This is an RCE which allows bad actors to run code remotely on your computer when connected on the same server as them.

The scope at the moment seems to mostly affect mods on 1.7 and 1.12 but may also occur on other Minecraft versions, there is still work going on to find a full list of mods and affected versions. If you play singleplayer only you don't have anything to worry about, only if you play online on public servers.

Due to the nature of this being a remote code execution exploit, any attacker on the same server as you could've run any code on your computer, so as such there's no way to tell if you've been affected or what code was run.

The best course of action currently if you play older modpacks on 1.7/1.12 is to simply not join any public servers unprotected and to add this mod to your instances to protect yourself from the exploit.

More information about the exploit and affected mods and solutions can be found at

There is a thread in our Discord if you have any questions.

NOTE: We posted this on our Discord when it happened, but forgot to post to our News feed, so if you already got the ping from our Discord about this issue, this is the same issue, not a new one.

The situation seems to have relaxed a bit, the details on the malware and what it does is known (again if you're interested take a look at this GitHub repo) and we have tools available to detect if you're infected:

- CurseForge Infected mods detection tool
- NekoDetector

Both these tools will detect for any traces of the malware on your PC or within your modded Minecraft installations (be sure to scan your entire drives, or at least your user folder and any folders where you run Minecraft from).

Several platforms have come out and confirmed that they've scanned and removed all traces (if there were any) of the malware from their sites:

- ATLauncher: All clear to install and use ATLauncher modpacks
- CurseForge: All clear to install and use CurseForge modpacks and install and use CurseForge mods
- Modrinth: All clear to install and use Modrinth modpacks and install and use Modrinth mods
- Technic: All clear to install and use Technic official modpacks. Non official modpacks were not verified as they use external download sources, so if you plan on installing a third party pack from Technic, you should be cautious and scan after downloading.

Make sure that you have scanned your system using the tools mentioned above before installing or playing Minecraft.

ATLauncher will be investigating how we can detect for and warn against this type of attack going forward, including checking not only for this specific type of malware, but also checking for changes to your mods since downloading. Keep an eye out for more updates on that in the coming week or two.

As always, if you have any concerns or questions, please reach out in #malware-incident channel in our Discord.
