However, my main complain about GUI 17.4 is that the schematic windows cannot be cascaded. Although they can be set floating, this is even more annoying because all toolbars remain in the Capture window and when you select a tool, the Capture window pops over already open schematic window and you need a lot of useless extra clicks to return back to the currently edited schematic page. I always used cascading of schematic windows before because my complex designs includes many pages, not speaking about the library windows that are typically open simulatneously. My view is that the lack of CASCADING in Capture GUI 17.4 is critical and unacceptable for complex projects, and I would very highly appreciate if the Cadence guys will return back the CASCADING capability for schematic pages. In case this will be done, this will make the GUI really great and comfortable to use.

Yes, you can in general. However, try to open 10+ floating windows and edit them. All tools icons and tool dialogs remain in the large main Capture window and it comes on top of all schematic windows. You'll then get tired to locate the schematic page that you planned to add the component. Note, this is never a problem in the cascaded windows as in 17.2 and earlier, which all are inside the main Capture window. The 17.4 GUI is beautiful, perfect for games and text editing, but lack of windows cascading inside the main windo is a critical problem for teh CADs like Capture.

Make sure that you have any Capture related processes closed, a reboot should get you there. Find the active Capture.ini file, usually in the installation in tools\Capture and rename it. Start Regedit.exe, find the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\OrCAD\CaptureWorkspace key and delete it and the subkeys that belong to it, then close regedit and see if that fixes things. Get the latest hotfix.

We had an XP machine running 16.2 fine. Installed 16.3 into a new directory and it wouldn't load. Removed everything, 16.2 and 16.3 then reinstalled 16.3. Still has the same problem, when I launch orcad cis the first time it never loads. I can see the capture.exe process running in taskmgr, it grabs 50% of the CPU and will hold that for at least several hours without ever fully loading.

Me too. OrCAD Capture 16.3-p008 was working fine. All of a sudden, when I loaded it again, I would get the splash screen. A moment later the splash screen would go away, but the program window never came up. On Windows 7 when I mouse over OrCAD Capture on the task bar, I would get a short window with the program name in it, rather than a thumbnail of the main window -- I think this means the main window wasn't created yet, much less displayed. Task Manager showed the program, but not as "Not Responding". The program easily exited from task bar close window option on popup.

When I installed my ORCAD on a Windows 10 computer a while back, every time I run the Cadence License Server Configuration (when I swap USB dongle/license... because our company has a few), I always get this message at the very last step:

"Cadence License Server Configuration utility has detected that it needs to install the FLEXid 9 dongle driver on your system. Please make sure to connect your FLEXid USB dongle to an available USB port. The driver installation process may take a few minutes. Click OK to continue or Cancel to terminate the Cadence License Server Configuration utility"

I always click "OK" and it does its thing... long wait... and it gives the message below (which I always ignore because at the end the license/dongle still work as intended and the software is usable).

"- Unable to restart Cadence License Server with the new license file "..... ". Failed to install FLEXid dongle driver. Failed to update your CDS_LIC_FILE license path with the new license server setting "....".

Fast forward... June 2020, I installed the same software on a new computer I recently assembled running on the latest Windows 10 update. I went through the above License Server configuration process and when it got to the step where it says that the FLEXid 9 dongle driver needs to be installed, I clicked "OK" as usual. However this time after just a few seconds of clicking "OK", the system rebooted. This process is repeatable and the system will just reboot at this step on the process. The FLEXID information is blank on the System Settings at LMTOOLS which gives me the impression that the dongle is not installed and the information from it could not be retrieved.

After a series of long frustrating trial-and-error and numerous reboots, my computer finally gave up and showed Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). It referenced an error "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" related to the file "aksdf.sys". Now the more annoying thing is that my computer is now going to an endless loop of BSOD showing that issue. I did some Googling at it seems like the latest Windows 10 May 2020 update (version 2004) has some issues with this file.

Further Googling, this file is described as "The genuine aksdf.sys file is a software component of Aladdin HASP by Aladdin Knowledge Systems. Aladdin HASP (Hardware Against Software Piracy) a digital rights management (DRM) suite of protection and licensing software. Aksdf.sys is a filter driver that is necessary for the proper functioning of HASP. The component adds support for specialized external devices. Removing this file may cause problems with Aladdin hardware." It seems like Flexera is using this.

I think we have a central license server for our other Cadence softwares. However for ORCAD someone started getting a USB-dongle version and that's how everybody went afterwards. We ended up with several USB dongles, each maintained (or misplaced) by different people.

I am seeing suggestions of rolling out older versions of Windows 10 (prior to this update). Unfortunately the new PC has this latest version installed (after fresh installation) so there is no older version to rollback to. I have to find a way to get this older version somewhere.

I have the same issue after fresh setup of windows 10 incl latest updates (19042.685). Before v17.2 just worked fine but now after installing LMTool (v12.7..) my pc ends up with a blue screen immediately after start. Only safe mode booting and deinstalling LMTools stopped it. No idea how to fix that

You might be able to get the product to install and run but 9.1 was released in September of 1999, supported operating systems were then 95 / 98 and NT4. You could try the Aladdin site and see if the latest drivers might work but I suspect that the machine configuration and parallel port are not going to get along and it is not going to work. Also I believe that the dongle had some writeable storage which may be well past worn out by now. The net most economical solution might be to get upgraded given the amount of time and effort that might be required to resolve this.

All I had do is to get a new version of hinstall (version and 4.96) and of Haspds_windows.dll. I have managed to reload an old schematics and run PSpice on it. So apparently there are no problems.....Must be lucky!

I have had orcad 16.6 for about a year and have ran across a strange behavior. I click on the netlist icon and it asks for the file name, I enter the .mnl file name click OK it then says it is going to save the file prior to netlisting, I click on OK It then tells me that there are errors, which I expect as their is always something wrong that it finds. This is where the strange behavior occurs, when I click on OK the prompt goes away and no session log or netlist are created, and this is where I am stuck. I have tried rebooting my computer, i have created a new project and copied and pasted the entire (one page) design into a different file name, I get the same results, Any help out there?

Alas this did not work either, in the meantime I have tried coping and pasting the schematic onto and into a schematic that creates a .MNL file correctly and have gotten the same error with no log file and no .MNL file, anything else I can try? I would not be above emailing you the the schematic file to see if you have better luck, I have done something that the program doesn't like and I do not know what...

Running into an extremely frustrating issue with not being able to select parts. I'm using the program as normal, and after switching windows and coming back to OrCAD I can't select anything by clicking (off pages, parts, nets, etc). I can still marquee select items but I cannot drag them, as I lose the selection the moment I click on them.

Firstly update to the latest hotfix (S074) then start Capture and in the session log find out where your capture.ini file is. Close Capture and locate this file using Windows File Explorer and delete / rename it .old (Capture will make a new one when you start). Restart Capture, does this help? If not open the Registry Editor and locate Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Orcad\CaptureWorkSpace, select the folder name and right click delete. Then restart Capture and see if that helps.

Deleting the registry editor folder worked for me (although I'm running 17.4-2019-S15 and the registry editor folder is called CaptureWorkSpaceEx). Hope you find a fix soon, this select not working has hit me a number of times.

I design my schematic and PCB with orcad 10.3 but I have a problem . I updated Windows from Windows 7 to Windows 10. When I try open cadence it takes a lot of time. I mean it opens too late. Also when I open cadence, CPU is overloaded at %90-95.

It ran directly under DOS, needing a dedicated OrCAD display-driver for your particular graphics card
(as Windows was only just starting to get adopted, with 3.1 running on top of DOS)
But it also needed a Parallel-port dongle (Sentinel? - that apparently had links inside for different programs support, so wasn't too sophisticated)

So this may cause problems getting it to run on a recent PC, if you do have a copy, without the dongles etc.
(I can't recall what happened without the dongle, as to if some features still worked)
