Im helping a coworker setup her OfficeJet 9020 printer and I keep getting the "Driver is unavailable" error after install. I've tried installing it using the Windows add a printer option as well as using the HP Smart software. I've tried checking for driver updates in the device manager, but it says that the device already has the best drivers, and there's nothing available to download on Windows updates. I also tried installing HP Universal Print Driver for Windows - PCL 6 after seeing it on a Reddit forum, but that didn't help either.

After installing it, everything appears to be normal on the HP Smart app, it's connected to the printer, it has an IP address and nothing obvious like no ink. But if I try to print documents on the HP app, it tries to finish installing the printer and always fails. And then in Windows Printers & Scanners it will show that the drivers are unavailable.

Dealing with printer driver issues can be frustrating, but let's go through some troubleshooting steps that might help resolve the "Driver is unavailable" error for the HP OfficeJet 9020 printer on your coworker's computer.

One of my clients recently got a new HP Probook 650 G8 and I cannot get her HP Officejet Pro 9020 series printer installed on it. The printer installs fine on older laptops but not on this one for some reason. I have removed/reinstalled the printer multiple times and the printer always errors out and doesn't install the print driver and produces an error "Handle is invalid". The printer is setup via ethernet on the network but I also tried installing the printer via USB and keep running into the same issue. I tried installing the printer using the HP Smart App and downloading the full feature software from HP's website. I am at a total loss on this one. As a side not I had this same issue with another client using the same model printer and the laptop was a Z book 14" G8. The firmware on the printer is current and I tried a factory reset on the printer as well. Is there some sort of compatibility issue with this printer and newer hardware ? I know I have encountered this error before when installing other HP printers and using the UPD instead of the regular print driver always installs and the printer functions fine. This printer is not compatible with the UPD. Any help would be much appreciated

Reminder: If using USB, disconnect the USB printer cable between the printer and the computer before installing software. (Re)Connect the USB cable when instructed to do so near the end of the installation procedure.

The "offline" printer software can be installed using the Easy Start Software wrapper - use the newer version if more than one version is found. The Easy Start Software will find, download, and (hopefully) help you to select and install the full driver printer software.

I recently purchased an HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e All-in-One Printer but am unable to complete the installation of the EasyStart Software & Drivers for a wired or wireless printer connection, although a USB connection works fine with the same downloaded software/drivers package.

Seeking to avoid the irrevocable vendor lock-in and online connection requirements associated with the HP+/Instant Ink service and Smart software, I opted to install the alternative HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-in-One EasyStart Printer Setup Software from the HP website. This would also enable me to use the older HPScan app which I understand is superior to the scanning application now included in HP Smart.

The Software and Driver package downloads OK to the PC, but during the latter stages of the initial installation, and on subsequent manual attempts to connect to the printer from the downloaded software (Connection Options in setup.exe), the setup stalls .... apparently at the point where the program is performing a final check for the printer on my home LAN. The installation will not continue beyond this window, and I'm forced to cancel out of the Network Check " Checking network environment ..." screen.

The installation failure occurs (using either Automatic or Manual connection options in setup.exe) whenever the printer is connected by wired ethernet or a wireless network. However, I know the printer is correctly connected to my home LAN since I can simultaneously access its Embedded Web Server, from a browser on the same PC, at the assigned ethernet or wireless IP address.

One thing I've noticed, is that the wired/wireless installation Network Check "Checking network environment ...." will begin to run and increment the green progress bar immediately if the printer is powered OFF (although, of course, it will still eventually fail to "find" the printer). With the printer ON and connected to the LAN, the Network Check does not even begin to run the progress bar but hangs/stalls immediately .... as if it's detected the Printer on the LAN but doesn't like something!

When I finally selected the setup.exe option to connect the printer to a USB port, the installation completed immediately, and I can successfully open the HP Printer Assistant and run the HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-in-One printer management and HPScan applications from the connected PC.

The HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.7.4 is of little help, but notably after a couple of minutes of searching, does actually show the HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series (with wired IP in this case) as "Not Installed". Selecting it and continuing, prompts to restore the printer to factory defaults and then launch HP Smart .... which I'm really trying to avoid, so I haven't gone down this path!

I've tried fully uninstalling all of the HP 9020 series software/driver instances (using the recommended procedures), and reinstalling on two different Win 10 PCs, using both the HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-in-One EasyStart Printer Setup Software-Offlline Use Only and HP EasyStart Printer Setup Software (Internet connection required for driver installation).

For the LAN-connected printer option it always results in the same failure at the same point. I've also tried installing with all firewalls off, disconnected from the internet, and in Windows Safe mode .... without success.

I'm running out of ideas and starting to wonder if declining the HP+ activation and Smart options and the various other data sharing prompts in the initial Printer and software install setups is causing an issue. Consequently, I'd be very interested in hearing from anyone who is successfully running the above software over a LAN-connected 9025e-printer, or any other thoughts the community may have on resolving this problem!

Many times previous to this I've installed the web pack same software on the same machine(s) - both for the purpose of testing and (rarely) due to outside influences (Windows Updates stomping on the software, router replacement, odd interference of an unknown nature).

I can share what I have -- the "fix" is buried somewhere in repeated reboots of the printers and computer, the repeated cleaning out of left over pieces of software after each failed installation, and the vagaries of the software installation packages themselves.

I tried Easy Start first simply because I wanted to update some of my notes on the methodology. When it failed, I thought, OK - enough of this, I dislike this package anyway -- I will use the Web Pack.

Before other tasks... I ran the HP Smart "Reset" option and then uninstalled HP Smart until I had the printer software actually installed.... I'll post an example of that process at the bottom of this message.

If you see anything else, hang, blank, odd, click the "X" in the upper right of the "bad window" and try to exit -- based on "sometimes" experience with the Easy Start pack, that works and the software (now installed) might stay intact.

Honestly, I've not spent as much time on this as would require a decent analysis. Pressed for time, as soon as it's forced into compliance, I've had to move on to other projects. Not very good detective work, I know.

Also, the HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-In-One Printer is listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support as a printer supporting the driverless AirPrint technology. An AirPrint-enabled model is compatible with macOS, and can be used without additional drivers, provided that the printer and the Mac computer are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router). AirPrint works with wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet) network connections.

Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the iMac, and all other devices/computers. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on the iMac. Finally, power on all other devices/computers.

I have a networked HP OJ 9020 printer that I cannot print to anymore. Even Print-Test-Page now fails. I've seen others across many forums reporting a similar problem. I think I have partially debugged the problem, and I hope HP can look at further.

The problem - since I moved my then-working HP OJ 9020 to a new static IP address, I opted to delete the existing printer entry in Printers & Scanners and create a new entry that would utilize the new IP address. Despite a successful install and new printer entry, Print-Test-Page resulted in a print error dialog, and errored print jobs in the 9020 queue. No manner of running the HP Print Scan Doctor, uninstalling/reinstalling various 9020 driver pages, rebooting, restarting the printer spooler and so resolved the "print" problem. I could however access the printer's UI with a web browser, and the printer driver install process was smart enough to detect my printer was password protected and get the password from me (i.e., network connectivity was working for all but printing).
