The Empress (German: Die Kaiserin) is a German historical drama television series based on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, starring Devrim Lingnau in the title role, and Philip Froissant as Emperor Franz Joseph. It was released on Netflix on 29 September 2022. It was Netflix's second-most watched series worldwide for two weeks and the seventh most popular non-English series of 2022, with over 150 million hours streamed. On 8 November 2022, Netflix renewed it for a second season.[4][5][6] Netflix also commissioned a companion novel, The Empress: A Novel, by Gigi Griffis, which was published two days before the series premiered on the streaming service.[7]

Sixteen-year-old Bavarian Duchess, Elisabeth "Sisi" von Wittelsbach, falls in love with Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, the intended fianc of her older sister, Duchess Helene, and they marry. Arriving in Vienna, Sisi finds herself navigating the complexity of court politics and her husband's scheming family. Her mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie, who is also her aunt, antagonizes her almost immediately. Maximilian, Franz Joseph's younger brother, tries to outshine his brother and prove that he is more worthy to rule.

Franz has recently taken over as a young emperor following the Revolutions of 1848 in the Austrian Empire. In 1853, there is an assassination attempt on the life of Franz. In 1853, Elisabeth (Sisi) and Helene travel with their mother, Ludovika, to meet 23-year-old Emperor Franz, who is expected to ask for Helene's hand.Franz's mother, Archduchess Sophie, is of the opinion that her son's union with Bayern Helene will validate Austria's claim to the German states. At the party, he stuns everyone by deciding to marry Sisi.

Elisabeth arrives in Vienna for her wedding. Soon enough she faces palace intrigue.Franz tells his council of war that he doesn't want the House of Habsburg to join either side in the Crimean War.Johann Strauss II helps Elisabeth and Franz during their waltz rehearsal.

In December 2020, Netflix announced it would start producing a six-part series with the working title The Empress, based on the life of Austrian Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria (nicknamed Sisi). It would be directed by Katrin Gebbe and Florian Cossen, with Bernd Lange and Janna Maria Nandzik writing. Devrim Lingnau and Philip Froissant were announced in the lead roles.[8]

Filming began in August 2021 and was completed in January 2022.[9] The series was filmed in German.[3] Netflix subsequently dubbed the series into 14 languages, including English. Subtitles were provided in 32 languages.[3]

The story line takes place primarily in Vienna, though parts of the first episode are set in Bavaria, where the young Elisabeth was living when she met the emperor. Nonetheless, exterior filming was completed in Germany, primarily in Bavaria. For studio work, the production moved to Babelsberg Studio in Potsdam. Location shooting was completed in cities such as Bayreuth, Stein, Bamberg, Dinkelsbhl, Eckersdorf and Aidhausen. Several historical locations were used, including Schloss Weienstein in Pommersfelden, which stood in for Schnbrunn Palace.[10] Exterior scenes of Sisi's childhood home were filmed at Eyrichshof Castle near Ebern, although the family's summer home was actually the nearby Possenhofen Castle.[11]

For a drama with so many twists and turns that I lost track, the ending of The Last Empress surprisingly tied up the loose ends relatively neatly though it does has it loopholes, and gave a closure to viewers by ensuring that all baddies pay for their evil doings.

The ridiculous part is that no one even grieved for the death of the supposed male lead Na Wang Shik. Not Dong Shik. Not his mentor. Not even Sunny Oh, who was previously portrayed to harbour some special feelings for Na Wang Shik and vice versa.

Ironically only our dear Emperor who had wanted to kill Na Wang Shik since the start of drama, seems affected by his death, and abruptly claims that he will live as Na Wang Shik and help him finish off what he wanted in getting his revenge.

As much as I like our dear Emperor Lee Hyuk as he became cuter and cuter in the later episodes, there is no denying that he did terrible things in the past and his many mistakes can never be forgiven or forgotten as he caused way too many deaths.

In the end the great mystery was revealed, and it turned out that she committed suicide, cos she witnessed the Empress Dowager and the Emperor trying to kill her, and it apparently made her so sad that she rather just kill herself and leave clues to get these 2 people in trouble.

I believe both these mistakes were made because there was a last minute extension of the story to add four more episodes from original plan. When you make these sudden changes, carefully laid plot end up all wrong.

On Trantor, Brother Dusk finds Enjoiner Rue in Demerzel's quarters, using a Shadowmaster's silencer to mask her presence. Dusk wants to know how she has knowledge of the servant byways in the Imperial Palace. Rue tells him that they have not changed since her days in the Gossamer Court. Dusk oversaw her erasure and therefore she should not remember any of her time in the Palace, but Rue reveals that the Cloud Dominion has the technology to restore memories. Dusk points out that the knowledge makes her suspect in the assassination attempt on his brother's life. Rue disagrees since the marriage would only advance Cloud Dominion. Wanting to know why Rue is in Demerzel's quarters, Rue makes it clear that Demerzel has revealed herself to be a threat to Queen Sareth I's life. Rue reveals she knows Demerzel is a robot and asks where she comes from. Dusk states that "she will always be here, as she always has been." When he repeats the answer several times, Rue believes that Dusk has had the words programmed into his mind.

At the Mural of Souls, Dusk tells Rue about the history of the Robot Wars, and how they managed to subvert the Three Laws. The wars raged, robots against robots and robots against men until humankind prevailed. Dusk continues to repeat the same phrase and Rue offers to restore Dusk's memories using Cloud Dominion's technique. Dusk notices something on the Mural relating to the Robot Wars; the chroma used on one of the robot images is not moving. Before he can investigate further, Captain Timandra arrives and informs Dusk he is wanted at the execution of the Foundation's emissaries.

On Ignis, Gaal confronts Tellem Bond on the beach, demanding to know where Salvor is. Tellem says that Salvor is hidden away because she discovered that Tellem killed Hari. Tellem tells Gaal to stop pretending; she knew that Hari was dead from the moment it happened. Gaal admits that she felt the water in her lungs and asks why. Tellem wanted Gaal to remove Hari from the equation to save Salvor but when she wouldn't, Tellem did it for her. It is revealed that Gaal is also trapped in a cave, with dishes above her head cancelling out her psychic pitch. Tellem wants Gaal's defenses broken so that she can find out what she is hiding. Back on the beach, Tellem appears unsteady and sick, which is seen by Josiah.

The execution is being broadcast across the galaxy, with viewers watching from Terminus, Shining Destiny, and Siwenna. Emperor Cleon XVII gives a speech to a chanting crowd, condemning Poly Verisof and Brother Constant as traitors in the same vein as those who destroyed the Star Bridge. He intends to behead them with the Collar of Typhon, a relic from days past. Day offers Sareth the choice of who is be executed first but she cannot, so he chooses Constant. Placing the collar on her neck, Day listens as she recites a prayer to the Galactic Spirit, asking it to "guide me through the darkness." Demerzel senses something is wrong, and warns Day just as Hober Mallow arrives in the Spirit Rising, sending people flying as the ship displaces above the execution.

Hober advances into the mess to try and rescue Poly and Constant. Dusk and Rue find each other, and Dawn cradles an unconscious Sareth. Demerzel lays flat on top of Day as his aura was damaged but he pushes her off. Hober finds Constant with the collar halfway closed. They cannot get to Poly who tells them to get away. Beki enters the fray and chases a terrified Day and bites him, but she is shot by his guards and falls from a great height. Hober and Constant escape into Trantor orbit, but Poly is left behind. Aboard the Spirit Rising, Hober manages to deactivate the collar and free Constant. Aboard the Shining Destiny, Glawen Curr tells Bel Riose that Hober has proven one thing; Empire can be touched.

In the aftermath, Dusk demands they move swiftly and decisively; the Foundation has effectively declared war on the Empire and Empire should respond in kind. Day is of the opinion that they will destroy the Foundation utterly if it comes to war, but he wants to talk to them instead. He intends to go to Terminus, and Sareth supports the decision, allowing their wedding to be postponed. Day will reclaim what is theirs on Terminus, leaving Trantor in Dawn's hands.

In her quarters, Sareth and Rue talk about how the Cleons are fragmenting and how Sareth is inserting herself between them. As they talk, it is clear that Rue is in love with Dusk, just as Sareth is in love with Dawn. Rue reminds Sareth to think of the Cloud Dominion, and that she can dispose of Day later and will be Empress whether it is as a wife or a widow. Sareth says that while she values Rue, she is also the queen and the choices are hers to make.
