This article presents an evaluation of novel display concepts for an emergency department information system (EDIS) designed using cognitive systems engineering methods. EDISs assist emergency medicine staff with tracking patient care and ED resource allocation. Participants performed patient planning and orientation tasks using the EDIS displays and rated the display's ability to support various cognitive performance objectives along with the usability, usefulness, and predicted frequency of use for 18 system components. Mean ratings were positive for cognitive performance support objectives, usability, usefulness, and frequency of use, demonstrating the successful application of design methods to create useful and usable EDIS concepts that provide cognitive support for emergency medicine staff. Nurse and provider roles had significantly different perceptions of the usability and usefulness of certain EDIS components, suggesting that they have different information needs while working.
''The Defense Department recognizes 5G technology is vital to maintaining America's military and economic advantages,'' said Dr. Joseph Evans, DOD technical director for 5G and the lead for the department's 5G development effort. ''We expect to start construction on the network at Nellis in July and have it fully operational in January of next year.''
The Information Warfare Research Project (IWRP), an industry consortium, will seek commercial software prototypes through a Prototype Other Transactional Authority (OTA) process it will manage. IWRP member companies may provide prototype proposals. Prototypes will focus on two areas: Applications and Services for Survivable Command and Control (C2) and Wireless Network Enhancements.
Applications and Services for Survivable C2 prototypes will build or revise C2 software used at Air and Wing Operations Centers to support distributed planning and mission-execution functions. These applications involve architectures that enable C2 operations under a variety of 5G network conditions. They may incorporate human-machine interfaces, which go beyond simple graphic-user interfaces and may include audio, gestures, augmented reality devices and haptics that stimulate touch and motion. Network Enhancement prototypes will build and test novel 5G features including network slicing to allow network operators to dedicate portions of their networks to specific uses and software-defined networking, which makes network control possible using software applications. This prototype will also test interoperability with legacy and future generations of cellular and mobile networking.
A Defense Science Board commissioned by the department recommended it deploy small modular reactors to meet its increasing energy needs, the environmental impact statement said. The Idaho National Laboratory defines micronuclear reactors as small nuclear reactors that produce roughly 1-50 megawatts and can operate independently from electric grids.
Two teams, BWXT Advance Technologies from Virginia and X-energy from Maryland, are developing final designs for the prototype, which will be reviewed by the department in early 2022, according to a March press release. Following the completion of the project's environmental analysis, one of the teams may be selected to build and demonstrate a prototype, the release said.
ED/IES SBIR provides up to $1.25M in funding in 2 phases: Phase I for $250,000 for 8-months for rapid prototype development and evaluation of new education technology prototypes and Phase II for $1,000,000 for the full-scale development and evaluation of new education technology products.
Phase I awards are for periods up to 8 months in amounts up to $250,000. A funded Phase I SBIR project would be successful if at the end of a 8-month period the team: (1) had developed a functioning prototype of an education technology product, and (2) conducted research to determine the usability and initial feasibility of the prototype.
Volz said the transition of space traffic management responsibilities will happen in 2024. Between now and then, the OADR prototype has to be matured into a real operational system that can support government agencies and private sector satellite operators. He said the prototype was tested against more than 20,000 objects orbiting Earth.
This prototype has limited functionality and may not represent the final FAFSA experience. For example, since the prototype does not maintain a database, data cannot be stored or submitted. There are no simulated interfaces with systems internal or external to Federal Student Aid. In addition, while the prototype contains parameters allowing users to enter data and walk through the form, it does not include certain FAFSA functionality, such as a Student Aid Index calculation, field and page edits, or validation of data, that are characteristic of the FAFSA website.

The effort aims to mature BWB technology and demonstrate its capabilities, giving the department and commercial industry more options for future air platforms.
With a design that differs from a traditional tube-and-wing aircraft, the BWB blends the aircraft body into its high-aspect-ratio wing, decreasing aerodynamic drag by at least 30% and providing additional lift. This increased efficiency will enable extended range, more loiter time, and increased payload delivery efficiencies, capabilities that are vital to mitigating logistics risks.
The US Department of Defense (DoD) Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is helping to develop a prototype AI-based visual recognition and identification system with increased performance capability compared to the legacy system while reducing projected sustainment costs, says the agency.
After an 18-month prototype that concluded after reaching a final decision in April 2023, Teleidoscope, a first-time, non-traditional DOD vendor has been awarded a USD100M ceiling production contract with orders of the system already in progress.
The auto-tracking capabilities of the system are applicable to full-motion-video feeds, regardless of the domain, opening the door to augment remotely piloted aircraft video feed tracking capabilities. This prototype has the potential to run on any edge device, or cloud-provided full-motion video feed.
The purpose of this report, part of the Project Feedback series, is to describe the nine Operation BREAKTHROUGH prototype sites and tell how they were built.Operation BREAKTHROUGH is this country's first large-scale systematic housing demonstration program, featuring the public demonstration of innovative house designs and site plans. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) initiated BREAKTHROUGH to encourage more use of industrialized methods. It put these advanced ideas on trial, in prototype form, at nine locations. HUD chose the sites from among many nominated by local and state governments to represent a variety of market conditions. Urban, peripheral, suburban, and semi-rural neighborhoods are the settings for nearly 3,000 housing units built between 1971 and 1973. Development was the responsibility of eight Prototype Site Developers (PSDs), who were basically managers with a wide range of tasks, from land acquisition to marketing. Developers brought to this job an unusual array of capabilities; some of the management techniques applied in BREAKTHROUGH were new to the housing industry.
Jason Estes, senior associate with FGM Architects, shared that several Midwest suburban fire departments have opted for prototype plans, including Illinois fire departments in Plainfield, Frankfort, Lockport and Glenview.
One metro department, the Oklahoma City, OK, Fire Department (OKC Fire), has a fast-growing population that is straining the existing infrastructure. OKC Fire has an immediate need for multiple fire stations to keep up with the growth.
In 2007, Station 21 and 23 were identified in a bond proposal as needing to be replaced. However, there was a 10-year gap from the bond election to the start of the project and created cost issues from the beginning. Tony Davis, deputy chief, Support Services, explained that because construction costs had increased in the 10 years, the department decided to do both stations at the same time, hoping to save money.
Davis said the process initially began with the department sitting down to identify what they were looking for, before reaching out to Kirkpatrick Architecture Studio (KAS). The city conceived the idea of a prototype as a cost-saving method and requested the exact same floor plan for new stations. The stations were to be constructed simultaneously, sharing an identical base of 7,711 square feet, and use the same general contractor, W.L. McNatt.
