Community invited to opening of HP Zwar Park
MEDIA RELEASE, 12 August 2009
Darebin Mayor, Cr Diana Asmar, is inviting the community to the opening of HP Zwar Park in Preston this month, following almost $350,000 of improvements that feature pioneering sustainability initiatives.
The event will include a launch by the Mayor, light refreshments and children’s entertainment. It will also celebrate recent smaller park upgrades across Darebin.
The funding for the park includes $135,000 from the Australian Government’s Community Infrastructure Fund. Member for Batman and Minister for Energy and Resources, Martin Ferguson, will be launching the park with the Darebin Mayor.
As well as energy efficient lights and barbecues, spinning chairs in the shape of gumnuts have been installed that can produce their own light.
Darebin Mayor, Cr Diana Asmar, said the new spinning gumnut chairs were something fun that could draw people’s attention to the serious issue of climate change.
“The three gumnut seats were designed by furniture designer Roland Smith, and are made from renewable and recyclable materials. They can harness the energy people create when they spin on them, and 10 minutes of spinning by a child produces enough light for about an hour,” she said.
“The park also includes our first in-park raingarden as well as generous tree planting across the park area. Park furniture has been constructed from sustainable materials, and the park is 100% GreenPower.
“To celebrate the opening , we’re holding a family day to launch HP Zwar Reserve, with entertainment to keep the kids busy and some light refreshments. I’d like to invite everyone from the community to join us,” she said.
Cr Asmar said that while everyone was waiting to see what would happen at a national level with the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, local governments such as Darebin were getting on with the job of addressing climate change.
“We are incorporating sustainability principles wherever we can, and will continue to work towards cleaner air for our residents and a lighter carbon footprint,” Cr Asmar said.
