1. Beyond Zero Emissions - Discussion Group - Monday 12th April, 6.30pm
Featuring a discussion of Zero Carbon Transport with Prof. Peter Newman
Event location: Sans Frontiers Room, 2nd Floor, Kindness House, 288 Brunswick St, Fitzroy VIC.

Professor Peter Newman is best known for his work in saving, reviving and extending Perth’s rail system. This month's discussion group will be a great opportunity for those wishing to contribute to the 'transport sector of ZCA 2020', to learn about Zero Carbon Transport through Peter's many successes in this area.

Peter is the Professor of Sustainability at Curtin University and is on the Board of Infrastructure Australia that is funding infrastructure for the long term sustainability of Australian cities. His two new books in 2009 ‘Resilient Cities: Responding to Peak Oil and Climate Change’ and ‘Green Urbanism Down Under’, were both written with Tim Beatley. In 2001-3 Peter directed the production of Western Australia’s Sustainability Strategy in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. It was the first state sustainability strategy in the world. In 2004-5 he was a Sustainability Commissioner in Sydney advising the government on planning issues. In 2006/7 he was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the University of Virginia Charlottesville where he wrote his new books.

Peter invented the term ‘automobile dependence’ which is now part of most planning practice and theory. For 30 years since he attended Stanford University during the first oil crisis he has been warning cities about preparing for peak oil. Peter’s book with Jeff Kenworthy 'Sustainability and Cities: Overcoming Automobile Dependence' was launched in the White House in 1999. He was a Local Government Councillor in the City of Fremantle from 1976-80 where he still lives.

2. Educate your MP about transitioning to renewable energy! - Wednesday 14th April, 6.15pm
Beyond Zero Emissions is launching an initiative to ensure our elected representatives are aware of how we can transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2020.

To help counter the influence of the carbon lobby, we need you and other local residents to meet with your members of parliament to demonstrate the strength of community support for renewable energy. We know this isn't an easy task so we are holding a training session to develop the skills you'll need.

BZE has recently released the Executive Summary of the Zero Carbon Australia 2020 Stationary Energy Report , a comprehensive blueprint for how to make the transition.  At the training session we'll be discussing information from the plan and providing a road map on how to most effectively meet, educate and follow up with your members of parliament.

You'll get a chance to meet other people from your area and rehearse some strategies so you can work together to influence your member of parliament.

There are two great presenters:
Mark Ogge is Beyond Zero Emissions Campaign Director. He will present the latest technical information from the Zero Carbon Australia 2020 plan.
Damien Lawson is the Climate Action Centre's leading activist.  He will outline what you can expect when discussing climate action with your local MP and give tips for having a successful meeting.

Workshop details:
6.15 (for 6:30start)-8:30pm Wednesday 14th April
Venue: Climate Action Centre, Level 5, Trades Hall New Building Cnr Lygon St and Victoria Pde (Enter from Lygon St laneway)
Cost: Free. Tea and coffee provided.
Please RSVP with your name, email address, preferred phone number, suburb and name of your climate action group (if you have one) to allow us to organise local area contingents. RSVP ASAP to jam...@beyondzeroemissions.org

3. Greenpeace Report: Dealing in Doubt - exposing climate change denial
New report from Greenpeace International that documents much of the denialist effort on climate change over the last couple of decades. Julien Vincent, Greenpeace Climate & Energy Campaigner, says the report is: "part of our response to the recent increase in vocal climate change denial - rather than spend a lot of time defending the science, we are trying to put the criticisms of climate science in perspective and point out what is driving the denial".

The report is called Dealing in Doubt and it is available on the Greenpeace International website. You can get the report by clicking here.

4. Manufacturing of climate denialism - ABC Science Show
Very interesting and useful program about the manufacturing of climate denialism and exploration of strategies for dealing with it on the ABC Science Show.
