A friend recommended a Quebec television series on Netflix called Au Secours de Beatrice (Saving Beatrice) about an emergency room doctor in her forties who begins to experience some rather mysterious health symptoms and turns to a therapist for help in uncovering their cause.

2. About a quarter to a third of each episode shows Beatrice with her therapist talking about the issues in her life and in particular how her life has been influenced by her childhood.

I have never been to therapy so the show provides for me a fascinating look at how one can view things from different angles and with renewed perspective after discussing it with a professional therapist.

Going to the hospital is rarely a good thing and seldom a treat. However, when it comes to these medical dramas, the chance to go to the hospital is the most exciting part of our weeks. With a plethora of intricate medical cases, high-octane surgeries, and panicked casualties providing constant drama, it's clear why millions flock to stream these medical dramas every day. That's without mentioning the romances, break-ups, and family drama, with some of the most detailed character development in all of modern media coming inside the walls of a hospital. To help you figure out the best medical dramas on Netflix, here is a helpful guide.

One of the longest-running modern procedurals, Grey's Anatomy depicts the highs, lows, and everything in between for a set of surgical interns at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, originally known as the Seattle Grace Hospital. With 427 current episodes to its name across the last 19 years, Grey's Anatomy has proven time and again just how popular it is, with millions of followers tuning in from the first episode in 2005 until now. Created by Shonda Rhimes, many would think that Grey's has done everything there is to be done in the world of medical drama, but they are still managing to craft brand new, often shocking storylines to this day, whether that be a bomb scare, a murder, or the dramatic break-up of a once-happy marriage. The show is a winner of 4 Primetime Emmys, among 84 other award wins and 253 nominations.

A winner of Best Breakout Show at the Teen Choice Awards, The Resident follows the ups and downs faced by the doctors at Chastain Memorial Hospital, with their intricate personal lives often becoming interwoven with their professional applications. Starring the likes of Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greenwood, and more, The Resident is still fondly loved by its fans thanks to a gripping ensemble of actors that all manage to walk the line between delivering interesting medical accuracy and pulse-racing personal drama. Unlike some other series of this nature, The Resident actually ages like a fine wine, with later episodes of the series held in higher regard by fans than earlier episodes. Packed full of romance and tension, The Resident is primed for a binge-watch.

The enormously successful Virgin River, based on Robyn Carr's series of romantic novels, follows Melinda Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), a medical professional, who moves from the bright lights and busy streets of Los Angeles to a sleepy town in North Carolina. Expecting to find an easier job with much smaller medical cases, Mel is instead met by a Greek tragedy, with everything that could go wrong seemingly doing so. Comfort viewing akin to Gilmore Girls at times and high-octane drama akin to Grey's Anatomy at others, Virgin River provides entertainment in abundance set against a gorgeous backdrop that is allowed plenty of time to be admired. Featuring a wonderful set of ensemble performances, perhaps highlighted by Colin Lawrence as John Middleton, a role for which he won the Leo Award for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series, Virgin River has something for everyone.

Another one of Mindy Kaling's many creations, The Mindy Project follows the life of obstetrician/gynecologist Mindy Lahiri, played by Kaling, as she attempts to navigate the seemingly endless challenges in both her personal and private life, from tricky cases at her New York medical practice to quirky characters in her home life. For fans of sitcoms, this makes for perfect viewing, with the tried and tested sitcom formula put to excellent use by a woman who is no stranger to television triumph. Nominated for a Primetime Emmy back in 2015, the series is bags of fun with a tender heart, with many of the show's characters given the time to make an emotional impact, no matter how big or small. With 6 seasons available, there is more than enough content to sink your teeth into, with this one of Kaling's best post-The Office projects.

Hailing from Taiwan, this medical drama follows the lives of the practitioners at a university-affiliated hospital, as well as showcasing the intricate structure of power within its hierarchy. Sadly, The Hospital was only ever on for one season, although that season does contain 39 hours worth of indulgent content. An awards darling upon release, The Hospital was praised for its talented ensemble, dramatic storylines, and intelligent use of music, with the series certainly doing justice to its beloved source material, Hou Wenyong's novel of the same name. One of the best Taiwanese series currently on Netflix, this is a medical drama you simply won't want to miss.

Over the years, medical drama shows have established a solid foothold in television, endearing themselves to the hearts of a wide range of audiences. No matter how many shows are released, they are still relevant and continue to engage fans all over the world. To be honest, this comes as no surprise: watching these shows allows the audience to experience firsthand the extraordinary work that doctors and other specialists do on a daily basis, which makes a lot of people very curious.

Throughout each season, we get to follow different groups of doctors as they struggle with tricky diagnoses, race against time to save lives, and perform the most complex investigations to come up with solutions that can be world-changing. And as if that wasn't enough in itself, these shows are generally rounded out with both dramatic and heartwarming stories of different patients, dozens of affairs and even life achievements for each of the characters that make us eager to watch one episode after the next. Anything can happen in a hospital, which is why this particular TV genre tends to pull us in pretty easily.

While medical TV dramas have everything it takes to hook the audience, they are not always perfectly accurate, and as is often the case with many fictional productions, they paint a picture that is not entirely true. Life in hospitals is not as you see it on your favorite medical show, and the work of doctors and health professionals is not quite like that either. However, even so, these TV series are compelling for many viewers. Here are the best ones you can binge-watch on Netflix.

Ratched is a 2020 show created by Evan Romansky and developed by Ryan Murphy that serves as a prequel to the classic film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. In it, Sarah Paulson stars as Nurse Mildred Ratched, and the audience gets to discover the origin story of this infamous character and the evil plans she conceals behind a seemingly innocent and flawless image.

Finn Wittrock, Cynthia Nixon, Jon Jon Briones, Charlie Carver, Judy Davis, and Sharon Stone join Paulson in this production that earned, among other accolades, three Golden Globe Award nominations. Originally, Ratched was intended to run for two seasons, renewing the show for another season from the time of its premiere. However, a few years have passed since then and there is still no news regarding its continuation.

After working together on the popular drama series I'm Sorry, I Love You in 2004, director Lee Hyung-min and screenwriter Lee Kyung-hee teamed up again in 2019 to treat audiences to Chocolate, a South Korean drama starring Yoon Kye-sang and Ha Ji-won.

Throughout the show's 16 episodes, we are introduced to the relationship between Lee Kang, a man who always dreamed of becoming a chef but grew up to be a neurosurgeon, and Moon Cha-Young, a gourmet expert. However, these two people have actually met long ago in the past, and as a matter of fact, she became a cook because of their chance meeting all those years ago.

New Amsterdam is a medical drama show created by David Schulner based on Eric Manheimer's book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital. This production features Dr. Max Goodwin, a man who emerges as the new Medical Director of the New Amsterdam Hospital, the oldest facility in the United States.
