Welcome to my April 2017 Newsletter. Strange times. The rise of populism and nationalism. Donald Trump and Brexit. The promise - or for Westworld fans and Elon Musk, the threat - of serious artificial intelligence. A time when wisdom is in perhaps in short supply but is more vital than ever.
Attending the World Government Summit in UAE in February UAE, where I contributed to a seminar of happiness, opened my eyes to the gravity of these problems and at the same time made me more aware of some promising ways forward.
I wrote a series of articles summarising what I learnt. Did you know about Elon Musk's crazy yet genius ideas about trips to Mars and self-driving cars? Are you interested in the Bhutan's Prime Minister's equally crazy but genius idea that governments take their citizens' happiness more seriously?
Happiness is a particular focus of the UAE and a number of distinguished speakers at the WGS spoke about happiness. How can you become happier? Find out how by exploring my short series - "How to become happier".
In this age of technological advance, there is a real prospect that we might be able to live much longer, maybe even eternal life beckons. But would this be a good thing? Shamil Chandaria shares his thoughts in this stimulating Ted X talk.
What about meaning and purpose? In a world where androids do all the work, where will we humans get our meaning? Existential therapists and more recently positive psychologists have come up with some interesting ideas about how to enhance meaning - not just in the Brave New World, but now. This Summer 2017 London conference can help coaches and therapists learn about the latest ideas about enhancing meaning for their clients. I'm very pleased to be offering a new course on Positive Psychology on Thursday nights at City University, London starting on May 4th for 10 weeks. It focusses on "Becoming the best version of you" and will take in virtue ethics as well as evidence-based strategies for becoming more courageous, self-controlled, wiser - becoming an excellent human being. If you've done my other Positive Psychology course at City Uni, this course is the perfect complement. If you haven't studied Positive Psychology before, then this course is a good place to start.
Hope to see you this Spring. My very best wishes Tim
