Jeepers. I made the post below as a reply to another thread. However I
seem to have lost that thread or see my post anywhere. So here I go
again.

<snip>

I have a folder I've created for the month of January 2012. I have a
single task applicable only for time records with start date on or
after January 1, 2012. No other task used in previous months (and
hence assigned to time records in the folders corresponding to those
earlier months) are applicable after January 1, 2012. So, for example,
taskA is the only task applicable to December 2011 and that task is
applicable to no other months. Continuing with the example, taskB that
is the only task applicable to January 2012 and that task is
applicable to no other months.

In the preferences I have selected to display the task column on each
job record. When entering a new time record in the folder for January
2012 I would like to see only taskB available in the task drop down.
When entering a new time record in the folder for December 2011 I
would like to see only taskA available in the task drop down.

I have applied a filter to the folder for January 2012 which limits
that folder to taskB and "No Task". That has two deficits. For one it
shows both taskA and taskB in the task drop down. Also, any new record
entered is immediately hidden so that I am unable to apply taskB to
the new record.

Any thoughts.

Is this for TimeSlice 4.5.3 for Mac?

I'm not sure I totally understand. I think there are two questions (deficits?) contained in the last paragraph. My two replies are:
1. How do you limit a folder to "no task"?
2. I suggest you create a "New Records" template with the desired task, and then start new time records using the template.

If that doesn't answer your questions, I suggest you state the issue with explicit steps to take to recreate the situation. Then I (or anyone) can duplicate your steps, see the results, and then make appropriate comments. Maybe something like this:

1. Create a Task with name TaskA.
2. Set a filter with these rules:......
3. Start a new time record....
4.....

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks a bunch Bill. You're always so prompt and your software is
great. Please be assured that when I said "deficit" I meant in my
approach and not in the software.

I had only added "No Task" to the filter so that new records with "No
Task" as a task assignment would still show up along with the other
tasks in the filter. I guess the "No Task" string is a UI
representation of a null/nil value for the task on the record so
there's no match to my string "No Task". Your suggestion of a "New
Records" template solves this problem perfectly. I can't believe I've
use TimeSlice for a gazillion years and didn't think of that.

There is no particular issue, just a requirement. Also let me not
cloud my requirements with my silly, failed approach to a solution.
I'd like to state my requirement in a clearer and less rigorous
manner.

Precisely four tasks exist in the TimeSlice database: Task1, Task2,
Task3, Task4. Precisely two folders exist in the database: Folder1 and
Folder2. I want to use the task selector which shows on records to
assign tasks to records. In Folder1 I only want Task1 and Task2 to
show up. In Folder2 I only want Task3 and Task4 to show up.

An alternative way to satisfy my requirement...I only want Task1 and
Task2 to show up on records with start date between Date1 and Date2. I
only want Task3 and Task4 to show up on records with start date
between Date3 and Date4. This satisfies my requirement since I use
folders to represent date ranges of work.

Slap me around if that's still unclear.

Barry,

Glad the "New Time Records" template helps!
As for your other requirement, I'm slowly updating TimeSlice to take advantage of some of the newer MacOS features, as well as removing some depreciated functionality. I'll be posting the new releases to the beta group <http://timeslice.us/mac/beta/>, and that would be the place to work with me and the other beta users to better understand your requirements. You may want to join that group, as I hope to post something there soon.

Thanks,
Bill
