Hi everyone. My computer's been away for repair since Tuesday morning and I'm trying to get by o.n my not-so-smart phone. I've had to figure out how to do things that I normally do on the laptop. So tonight's experiment was tryin.g to get on here. The problem is that because I've never accessed it on my phone before, it takes me to the 1st message in each topic!!! So that's why I just started a new one. I should hopefully get the laptop back on Tuesday ... and be able to catch up on a week's work!

Well Fiona I agree in part about the Smart Phone. My son has just bought one for me and it has been a tortuous process even to set it up.  Amazingly though, the computer/internet functions seem to be relatively easy to navigate.  What is nigh on impossible to do on this instrument of torture is....make a phone call!!!!  Obviously people want to carry around a personal computer, they have not much interest in using them as phones!!!!  Oh for my lovely old-fashioned Motorola...sadly now held together with sellotape.!

Hello Fiona, stick with it. I sometimes use my iPhone and have to long in a long winded way. But it gets there eventually.

Phonecalls are not a problem Glen - but all my work spreadsheets and documents are on the laptop so I can't do any work! This phone also has a memory shortage ( note to self when contract ends) so it keeps refusing to do things. However I have far more time on my hands now that I'm not constantly doing internet things. Knitting is coming on apace and I've started decoupage-ing a table. Will catch up properly when I get back online hopefully on Tuesday.

Went to collect the computer and just before I got there, it stopped again. This time it's not charging so they've just ordered another part and it will be Thurs now. Can't believe 10 days without a computer!
I tried to get on M&S last night as they were doing 20% discount online, but the smartphone wasn't smart enough!

I made the M&S sale online Fiona and ordered some cashmere - a lovely range and bliss for Autumn/Winter! Hope tomorrow sees you online again and back with us.
I see some frost on my neighbour's roof this morning - glad I brought in my succulents last night or they would be dead!

Oh Fiona, how irritating! How was life before the invention of the home computer? I'm certain that I waste to much time online, but at one level, all this information is fascinating.

Jeannie, I watched a weather musing from a weather guru that I follow (online, of course) and he was musing that the weather systems are aligning in a similar pattern to last year - so a cold one! He stresses it is not a forecast, but he's watching closely what the bigger weather picture is doing.....

Oh Julia! The sun has been shining here today and it is lovely in the conservatory, but a biting wind outside. The 'wooley pulleys' have come out of hibernation, ready for the cold blasts! Wearing a sweater with a best underneath, so summer has passed in our part of the world.

... so last night I got a message asking if I was free tonight to do a gig in a theatre. I was, and tonight I was a thespian! It was a play about a boy who shoots half the people in a community choir run by a lesbian vicar. I was one of the choir who harm't been killed ( thankfully - not much fun playing a dead body). We had to sing, act, speak and I had a solo piece as well - all on about 45 mins rehearsal! What fun. One of the two real actors was Neve Mackintosh who is apparently a lizard in Dr Who.
It's called The Events and it's touring - worth going to see if it comes to a theatre near you!

Hello everyone - this is quite topical for me having just spent some time in France. The hotel was advertised as having free wifi but it wasn't working for some reason. Between the 4 of us we had 2 iPhones, a BlackBerry and and for me, a Samsung Galaxy. I switched on Eurotraveller on my phone and was able to access the internet (somewhat intermittently, as Trouville lived up to its name and was in  a hole as far as coverage was concerned :-)) However the iPhone and BlackBerry users for some unknown reason couldn't connect via data roaming and for my friend, it was as if her arm had been cut off! Her husband told her off for constantly checking her phone for a signal and I must say it began to annoy me a little at times!

I agree too Glen about making calls being the trickiest thing - I seem to switch off the call by holding it too close to my face and I just can't get used to that; otherwise, I really like my Galaxy.  I'm not a gamer and  it suits me fine.

What fun Fiona! Neve McIntosh plays Madam Vastra in Dr Who, she's been one of the major characters this last season but is completely unrecognisable under the prosthetics. Still manages to look rather beautiful though even as a green lizard woman.

Claire, I see this behaviour with phones all the time working with teenagers - constantly checking for updates and bereft without it. Our boarders have to hand in phones and laptops at bedtime and some of them find this really difficult, to the extent that they hand in 'fake' items! One boy was found to have 3 laptops!
