Subject: 2th July【JOY OF LIVING MEDITATION GROUP PRACTICE】
To:

Dear brothers and sisters,

Please see attached files, there are:

1. Notice of the next reunion of our community.

2."Opening Aspirations and Closing Dedication prayer" and the "Four Immesurables"

3.Six Words that Sum It All Up

IMPORTANT : Before coming to the group practice, please do your reading on the book:

 1.    "Joy of Living"  page 43-45           Chapter 2 Mindfulness】

                                     page 130-132      Chapter 9 Wisdom and Method】

2.    "Joy Of Wisdom"    page 15-21      Chapter 1 Making Friends

The following is what the next reading session is about;

o   Discussion:

§  Points to consider: Meditation involves simply resting in the bare awareness of thoughts, feelings and perceptions as they occur. To meditate, we don't have to block any part of our experience or change who and what we are. Rather, we use what occurs in the present moment as a gateway to inner peace and radiant joy.

§  Questions for discussion:

·       How is meditative awareness different from simply paying attention to things, as we do all the time?

·       What is mindfulness and what role does it play in meditation?

·       Do we have to stop thoughts and feelings to enter a meditative state?

·       Does meditation stifle our ability to think and be creative?

o   Guided Meditation:

§  Allow yourself to become aware of breath coming in and going out.  Let it be natural without trying to alter it in any way and without trying to focus hard on it.  As you relax, you may start to notice many thoughts passing through your mind.  Do not try to block or stop these thoughts.  Some of them will naturally let go while others may be more enticing and lead to a string of thoughts.  If you notice yourself chasing after these thoughts simply bring yourself back to your breath. Do so each time without punishing or condemning yourself.

o   Homework:

On the cushion:  Relax as you watch thoughts come and go in the mind.  If you find you have followed a thought simply become aware of the breath again. Can you see the difference between being lost in a thought and knowing that thinking is occurring?

Off the cushion:  Pick a simple activity and notice if you can be aware of what passes through the mind as you do the activity such as preparing food or household chores.  If you get carried away by thoughts simply return the attention to the activity you are doing.

Hope to see you soon!

With metta,

Hi,

Does anyone know (or can find out) who is the author of "Six words that Sum it all up".
I've tried to find reference to it an can't find it anywhere.

Thanks in advance,

Julian Rutherford
