Well, we had a nice gathering at our new downtown location yesterday.
I think the Purest Cafe will prove to be a good spot for us.
Our attendees, besides myself, included Marcus, Jack, and Michelle.
I've shared Marcus's information here before, but I can list it out
again since he is a regular attendee and I'm sure he would appreciate
any employment leads anyone here might know of. He's open to a
variety of types of work, including customer service/call center, land
surveying, delivery driving (no CDL), political campaigning, office
work, construction management, and janitorial work. He does have some
knee problems, so heavy physical labor would not be a good fit. He
lives downtown and travels by transit. He's willing to go just about
anywhere in the metro area, and is very flexible about working hours.
His hobbies and passions include writing, biblical scholarship,
studying the law, and campaigning for more job creation. He is
originally from Texas, but has lived in Oregon for the last 25 years.
He is also interested in local history.
Michelle happened by the meeting and joined us. She had multiple
interests and talents, but unfortunately has no steady place to stay
(she's couch surfing with friends) nor phone nor computer at the
moment, so there is no easy way to contact her. If anyone here has
anything they would like to share with her, you could let me know, and
if she comes to a future meeting - I told her we'd be meeting there
every Thursday at 2 - I can pass along the information to her. Her
interests and ambitions include filmmaking, writing, the arts,
science, magic, the outdoors, animals, radio (especially classic radio
- she would like to see a resurgence), and learning and sharing
people's stories. She would like to go to school but doesn't have the
money for it at the moment. She has found navigating the maze of
social service organizations to be somewhat bewildering and
exhausting. She is originally from Colorado, and has been in Portland
for about ten years.
Jack has recently completed school for medical assisting, but
unfortunately was not placed in an externship, so she is having
trouble finding medical-assisting work since she can't get the
required certification without an externship. She is now searching
for any job with health benefits, but her preference would be to work
in the medical field, especially at Kaiser. She is also a
screenwriter, and has completed several feature-length screenplays.
This is her passion, and it is what she would like to do full-time if
that were currently possible. Some of her other interests include a
passion for eating well, traveling, jetskiing, snowmobiling, hiking,
writing stories about activities she tries, following the local
independent circus scene, and torch music from the '20s and '30s.
Thanks to everyone for coming out! Looking forward to seeing new and
familiar faces next week. :-)
