Yandex Taxi (Russian: Яндекс Такси, tr. Yandeks Taksi; stylised as Yandex.Taxi) is an international company operating taxi hailing and food delivery services across Russia, the CIS, Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. It is owned by Russian tech company Yandex.[1] The company is among the world's leading developers of self-driving technology.[2]
Yandex has developed its own autonomous driverless cars for use as taxis. The first model available to the public is a heavily modified Toyota Prius with three lidar units, six radar units, and six cameras and a GNSS sensor for navigation, with Intel CPUs and NVIDIA GPUs using a Linux operating system.[26] In November 2017, Yandex released a video of its AV winter tests, in which the car drove successfully along snowy roads of Moscow.[27]
Yandex's robo-taxi service was launched in trial mode in August 2018 in the university town of Innopolis in the Republic of Tatarstan. Service was free during this trial, and a Yandex engineer occupied the front passenger seat as a safety observer while the driver's seat remained empty.[citation needed] In November 2018, it was reported that the company had given its 1000th self-driving passenger ride.[26] In February 2020, it was reported that over 5,000 autonomous passenger rides were made in Innopolis.[30]
In March 2020, Yandex announced plans to launch a worldwide fleet of robotaxis using its driverless car software within the next few years, with a licence to begin testing in the United States from June 2020.[44]
Yandex.Taxi works with partners who are authorized to provide transportation services. Depending on a country's laws, these can be taxi companies, taxi stations, licensed carriers, individual entrepreneurs, or other legal entities who have appropriate permissions. The company engages drivers training to use the Taximeter mobile app and communicate properly with passengers. Those who successfully complete the training program get a higher rating, which is an advantage for receiving orders.
As of 2022, Yandex.Taxi operates in more than 1,000 cities, include 300 large cities in Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Uzbekistan, Serbia. In addition to the taxi service, in some countries, Yandex.Taxi operates food tech, food delivery and cargo platforms.
Kazakhstan is one of the biggest international markets for Yandex.Taxi. Launched in the biggest city Almaty on 28 July 2016,[55] Yandex.Taxi was serving 20 cities by September 2018. On 3 September 2018, Yandex.Taxi introduced an insurance product for riders and drivers connected to the service.[56] Yandex.Taxi also provides corporate taxi services in Kazakhstan. In 2020 Kazakhstan became the first foreign market for the Yandex.Eats food delivery service.[57]
"Data about the trip can only be obtained by law enforcement agencies of the country where the trip was made," the company's press service said in a statement shared with the Russian media. Russia's new law on access to taxi data will not change those rules, Yandex added.
Citing unnamed sources from Yandex, Meduza reported that the company's taxi service data is stored in three data centers located in Russia. Before the war in Ukraine, some data was also stored in a center in Finland, but it was duplicated in Russia, the outlet reported.
This week Anonymous announced to have hacked the Yandex Taxi app, the largest taxi service in Russia, and used it to cause a massive traffic jam in Moscow. The threat actors ordered all available taxis to a particular address.
The traffic jam took place in the center of the Russian city on September 1st, 2022, dozens of taxis were sent by the hacktivists to the address on Kutuzovsky Prospekt, one of the main avenues in Moscow.
The Yandex-owned company stated that its security department immediately blocked the intruder and halted the fake taxi requests, however, the hack has caused a traffic jam. The company also announced that it will address the issue of compensation for the incident in the near future.
In April this year, Fasten and RuTaxi, both umbrella companies for multiple Russian taxi brands, announced a merger that will, by some estimates, account for up to 1.1 million monthly trips. Together, Uber and Yandex.Taxi may challenge that figure.
According to G-Taxi, affiliates Nadezhda Kim and A.K. Osmanbekov received a patent for an automated taxi ordering system in December 2015. The patent was officially registered in 2016 as a system that consists of a GPS tracker in a mobile phone, a mobile application for user and driver and an application for order processing.
Latvia was chosen for the pilot programme of the investment in the Baltic states. Already in mid-March this year, cars signed with the logo of the Russian company have appeared in Riga. Two months later, in May 2018, Yandex taxies appeared in Tallinn, and finally, at the turn of July and August, the service entered Vilnius.
The price of a given trip indicated in the service may change depending on taxi company rates, reduced or increased rates applied due to Rush Hour pricing, in cases specified in the Terms of Use, as well as due to stops during the ride at the passenger's request, the destination being changed after the start of the ride, or in other cases.
Yandex.Taxi, the taxi-hailing company which merged activities in Russia and some neighboring countries with Uber last year, is considering going public through a dual-listing in Russia and the USA. The company is in talks to hire Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs to manage the potential IPO.
Yandex.Taxi is not only the Russian leader in taxi-hailing services. The company also provides food delivery services, following a series of acquisitions, including that of Partiya Edy just weeks ago. Whether or not this business unit would be included in the potential IPO remains unclear.
Cab drivers found a massive traffic jam at the Hotel Ukraine. Drivers spent about 40 minutes at a standstill. And up to three hours more fighting through huge traffic jams, as all available taxis are still sent to the same address. But why?
And cyber armies will embrace it too. A day after the Yandex taxi app was breached and Anonymous claimed responsibility, it was announced that the attack was carried out in cooperation with the IT Army of Ukraine.
Uber will be speeding up the sale of its stake in a taxi joint-venture with Yandex, a Russian internet search company, in the wake of the Russian war taking place in Ukraine, Bloomberg reported Monday (Feb. 28).
"Yandex is developing world-class technologies and services and is constantly experimenting with them on international markets. Testing of taxis in Dubai on a pilot basis is no exception," a spokesman for Yandex Go said.
The company is developing the Yango brand in many countries in Africa, Latin America, Europe and other parts of the world. In addition to taxi hailing, Yango includes logistics services, scooter rentals and grocery delivery services.
Although most of Yandex revenue is currently based on advertising, it has launched efforts in the taxi space that could reveal its designs for many different internet-based businesses in Russia. Earlier this month, the company announced a combination of its taxi business with Uber. If Yandex is successful, it could enjoy a natural moat provided by governmental barriers of entry in the world's 13th largest economy.
As exciting as the taxi opportunity may be today, the Yandex revenue stream is supported mostly by advertising and search. Last year, only $38 million out of a $1.25 billion top linecame from the taxi business -- and the taxi business lost $35 million.
