Curious about the reason? The ALSA drivers don't support microphones for my soundcard (Creative Sound Blaster 5.1 VX). Also, It does not handle audio output quite well. I have issues. Also, I'd really like some software like the windows-only "Realtek Audio Manager" that does effects to the audio such as echoes and so on.

I am having the same annoying issue on my early 2011 macbook pro. I ran the bootcamp and realtek drivers, I even ran the cirrus drivers. I went to my cloned image of my windows 7 bootcamp install and tried to swap the driver files by hand and that did nothing except fixed a screen brightness issue. After installing windows 8.1 twice I have had no luck. Thanks Mr.Cook.

If you've downloaded the ZIP file, extract it, open device manager, right click on the HD audio device, click "update driver...", select "search my computer for driver software", browse to the folder where you extracted the ZIP file, check "include subfolders" and click next.

With a bit of luck it'll find the right driver and install it. You might not get all the additional software such as the control panel applet etc., but at least you should get sound working.

Also, I've had problems with the 32/64 bit driver refusing to install, error'ing out on multiple systems. The EXE file with only the 64 bit driver did work for me though. And said EXE file is a self-extraction executable which can be extracted using 7-Zip, so you can still follow the instructions listed above.

It's a long shot, but have you tried disconnecting from the internet (unplugging the ethernet cable), followed by these steps:

1. remove the device in device management (check "remove driver")
2. uninstall any realtek HD audio driver from control panel --> software
3. remove any remnants using PNPUtil from the command prompt
a. type pnputil -e to list the installed driver packages
